Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2012 F250 Diesel - Transmission Noise When Shifts Into 5th Gear?
When the truck shifts into 5th gear i instantly feel a constant vibration and noise until it shifts to 6th gear. This happens nearly every time while driving at 40mph. Rpm range 1200 - 2000. I bought the truck new on June 30th and noticed the problem on my way to work on Monday July 2nd. Took it to the dealer on July 5th and the tech said it was the torque converter slipping. I drove it home because they didn't have time to work on it. Took it back on July 12th and the dealer has had it since (currently 30 days) They originally told me it was not the engine or transmission and it was an exhaust problem. Last week they said it was the motor mounts and said they would be done.

2012 F250. 15k miles. It's intermittent, speed related, some sort of resonance or harmonic. WoooOOMMmm....woooOoMm, maybe every two seconds at 70 mph. Worn out tires once made a similar sound on a car I owned. This was severe inner wear on the rears. I'm not sure whether it's new or something I just never noticed; it's subtle.

My Father In-law has a 2012 f-350 Dually with 4K miles. He tows a 9K lb camper and until our last trip the truck ram flawlessly. On our return from Myrtle Beach to central NC we were on a freeway traveling at 63 MPH and his tranny would not shift into 6th gear. Tow haul was on. There was some headwind (10MPH) but no large grades or any reason we can think of not to allow an up shift. His display did show a countdown to empty of the exhaust fluid 450 miles to empty.
He took the truck in for service and no codes were found. Dealer did not find any TSB's addressing the tranny issues. Is the sixth gear up shift in tow haul set very conservative? Does it hold 5th unless the load is below a certain value? Other trips we have been on have been mountain towing so 6th gear shift would have been on down hill or level sections. Dealer wants us to bring it to them when it won't up shift next time but dealer is not along a freeway.
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2015 F250 - Engine Begins To Rev Up And Speed Increases But Trans Stuck In 2nd Gear
2015 F250 with 6r140 Transmission. I have 13 K miles on my truck. While pulling my Travel trailer up a hill the transmission kicks down thru the gears, which is fine, but as I crest the hill and in 2nd gear, the engine begins to rev up and the speed increases, the transmission will not automatically go into 3rd gear. I have tried to let up on the gas pedal, but it remains stuck in 2nd gear. I have to shift to manual and then put it in 3rd gear. Then it shifts up as it should. I have tried with the transmission in "TOW' and not in "TOW". I have even tried it in "Cruise Control". Ford dealership ran tests but could find no problem. However it was road tested without the trailer.

I have a 2004 F250 with a 6.0l Diesel and a 5 speed automatic. The truck is 4 wheel drive. As far as I know it is completely stock and has 236,500 miles on it. I thought that I was having stiction issues because when the truck is cold and when driving ~55 mph (1500 rpm) in 6th, the truck shudders until ECT gets to about 150F. This is at a constant speed, when accelerating or decelerating it doesn't shudder. Today I held 40 mph (1500 rpm) in 5th and there was no shudder. I don't know the TFT the shudder goes away at because the epiphany about the transmission was today. Once warmed up there is no to very slight shudder and only around 55 mph (1500 rpm). Above or below that the shudder goes away.
View 11 RepliesFord 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: When Engage Low Range In The Diesel / Transmission Starts In 2nd Gear
Well, last night I took my F-350 up a wheeling trail. I'd been up quite a few times in my old Rover, so I knew I could go a ways in without damage. Just uphill, muddy, and ruts / rock steps.
One thing I notice is that when you engage low range in the diesel, the transmission starts in 2nd gear. My previous gas Super Duties always started in 1st. I'm assuming this is to protect the transfer case from torque overload. Also, the throttle response seems to change when low is engaged (the pedal becomes less responsive, which is nice).
I've had the gas Super Duties off road before, and all of mine have had the locking rear diff. The diesel lugged along perfectly. My biggest fear was crunching the DPF / SCR / DOC canister on a rock step. In that respect, I'd rather wheel a gas. The manual shift function makes a lot of sense in low range - you can force a start in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. And prevent meaningless up / down shifts since the grade can change quickly.
These trucks' biggest hindrance is their size. However, if you have the trail room, they are actually excellent off road. Many people look at a Super Duty and see a vehicle good only for pulling or hauling. Not so, these trucks are as good as a Jeep off road, again with trail room being the only concern. The locking rear diff was never really needed, but I engaged and disengaged a few times to keep the mechanism free. I really love this feature.
One thing that happens frequently for me in north-east wheeling is water crossings. Could be a simple brook but mostly it is mud holes encountered on tight trails. In some cases these are only a foot or so deep; in other cases they are 4 feet deep. Ford states to "try" to keep the water below the level of the hubs, which amounts to about 15". Aside from possible front axle contamination, my biggest concern would be the electronics on the diesel which are mounted to the frame or floor pan (transmission module, NOx module, etc.) The gas Super Duties don't have these concerns. In the old days, as long as a diesel had air, the engine would run under water. This engine requires electronic control of many things, including the injectors...so it won't. There are also some axle / transmission breathers which run about floor pan high to be concerned about, but these can be easily extended.
Maybe it's due to the twisty frame which GM loves to insult Ford about, but these trucks have excellent wheel articulation. I'd be surprised if a coil sprung power wagon flexed more, at least in the rear. I'm impressed.
Finally, the traction control. I experimented a bit on a slippery rock step. This was the only step which required the rear locker - sort of. The front wheels climbed the step, but the back flexed to the point of one rear wheel basically almost off the ground and severely unloaded. With 4x4 Low engaged, and traction control "off" as much as Ford will allow, the truck could not pull itself up. Turning traction control on allowed the truck to very nearly pull itself up. A little more throttle / finesse probably would have gotten the truck over, but lots of ETC operation glazes the brakes and spews brake dust everywhere. Being able to start in a higher gear manually really adjusts the torque control. Locking the rear end and the loaded wheel bit right in and she went up and over.
When doing some off-road driving, the "off-road" screen for those of you with the LCD message center is kind of fun and informative to watch. It's nice to see how far your wheels are turned left or right when spinning in ruts or what crazy angle your truck is on. Howie Long could probably document the exact up / down / left / right slope angle a Super Duty needs to be on in order for the tailgate not to open. I never had an reason to open the tailgate while in these crazy angles, of course.
Overall, very impressed. It's not as good as my old Range Rover, but I would say more talented off road than ALL other Ford vehicles except the Raptor.
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2012 F250 Diesel Frequently Stalls Momentarily After Touch The Brake
My 2012 diesel frequently stalls momentarily after I touch the brake. This is very annoying as I drive in heavy traffic and often have to touch the brake then accelerate to merge into freeway traffic. The dealer service department said this was a 'feature' and not a flaw. Is there any way to eliminate this issue?
View 5 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Random Hard Starts - No Power At Speed?
I have an 03 Excursion with 220,000 on the clock. Started getting harder starts randomly about a month ago, maybe a little more, pulled codes got p2290. Reset everything, changed the oil, oil filter, both fuel filters, eventually the ICP sensor itself and rebuilt the IPR with new screen kit and rings. Hard start went away for about a week but ICP pressure was dropping drastically during hard throttle or even trying to go up a good sized hill. I had a bypass oil filtration kit on and noticed that the connection on top of the oil filter housing was weeping at idle and leaking enough at throttle to possibly cause an issue. Replaced with new OEM filter cap and fill cap, and ended up with a no start and low ICP pressure.
Got it started today after a long crank (15+ seconds), ICP and IPR at idle both warm and cold are mid 600's and low 20's (I can get actuals if needed). After reaching operating temp starts fine after shut off (both immediate and after sitting for 20 minutes). I picked up a selection of parts and tools including an ICP air test tool. Also grabbed a hpop gasket kit and the updated O-rings for the whole system. Live scanning wise I have an Edge CTS and also an SCT x4 that I can use.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: No Power - Only Accelerate At One Constant Speed While Driving?
My f350 6.0 has seem to have lost its power, while I was driving home it would only accelerate at one constant speed, and driving up hill it would not accelerate at all, I also noticed an elevated exhaust temperature.. There are no warning lights or dash lights indicating any problem.....
View 8 RepliesFord 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Power Reduced / Almost Stalled While Moving At Slow Speed
Saturday while moving some items for the inlaws my truck, while moving at slow speed, reduced power to the point where it almost stalled, anti lock brakes were growling, right rear tire was dragging the brakes skidding the tire. maybe ten seconds then ran normal. got to stop sign and made a right turn and at about 30 mph started doing the same on and off for maybe 30 seconds. All the time Advance Track light blinking 3 times then pause, and repeating.
Stopped in a parking lot for a couple mins, did not shut off but drove the rest of the way home normally. At home we could smell brakes cooking, right rear brake disk was very hot. Drove to dealer Sunday morn with Advance Track over-ridden and ran normal. What would happen at highway speeds or towing my fiver? Bet they cant reproduce the prob, left no code etc. You know what that means.... I will update later.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Cruise Control Isn't Maintaining Speed
I was driving home from school last week and noticed my cruise control would stay set for 5 minutes or so, then slowly (over several minutes) lose speed. I've noticed it happen before, but very infrequently and usually if I stopped to use the restroom, when I started the truck back up it was fine. This time it continued to happen.
As I was getting nearer to home, I noticed that while I had the cruise set, I would hear a high squeaking noise in the dash almost dead center under the radio. Then , when I would tap the brakes, there would be a rattle. This would only happen with the cruise set.
Noise in dash - YouTube
Not sure how well the squeak can be heard, but the rattle is definitely audible. What the cause might be? Electrical, mechanical, are the cruise and the noise even related? Other than that, the truck seems to be running alright.
Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: 2011 - Ecoboost Shutters While Coasting Or Maintaining Speed?
I have noticed over the past month that as I am maintaining speed, I will have a vibration or shutter. It sounds and feels like you are running over the cuts in the road on the shoulder. I can accelerate and make it stop but as soon as I want to maintain speed it will happen again. It does not feel like there is anything going on in the transmission. I have searched the forums and have found some similar problems but not exactly. Where should I look first? U-Joint, Drivesahft?
View 1 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Clack At Low Speed Acceleration?
What makes a 6.0 or 7.3 "clack"? I am not experienced enough with internals of a diesel to understand it.
Reason I ask, is my 6.0 is clackier than ANY other 6.0 or 7.3 that I have encountered. I mean it really cackles. Injector timing?
the engine was "bulletproofed" and (as the seller stated to me) was "flashed with a custom designed tune made by a Powerstroke specialist"... to which I have no further information on. This I assume was done for longevity and not performance.
Its quiet on the highway, but in town and stop-starts or low-speed acceleration it is crazy crackly.
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Any Way To Disable Speed Restrictor?
I was taking a trip the other day and needed to pass some slow traffic and found that the engine quit making power at around 95 mph. From 45 to 95 comes fast. Not good to have power stop when passing.
I know it is not safe to be driving our trucks at around 100 mph, but for a short burst to pass traffic, it is more dangerous to have the engine quit making power while you are trying to pass.
We purchased our truck new in 2012 so since I just found out about the problem, I have not had the truck up to 95 before now.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Fan Speed Sensor Popped Up?
So my fan speed sensor popped up on Torque. I almost never hear the engine fan in the first place. But once in a while I do. I've only ever heard it when I'm laden with enough weight to really strain the engine. It sounds like a freight train when it does kick on. Should I be worried? I've done the EGR delete. New oil cooler. 4" straight pipe from turbo to just behind the cab. 130k on the works. 6spd manual.
View 8 RepliesFord 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Max Speed On Interstate In 4 High
I have a 2012 F350 I keep the hubs in auto all the time. In the winter I just flip the switch to 4 high when I hit snow conditions. I know to shift in or out I need to be below 55mph. How fast can I safely drive in 4 high on the interstate? I drive hundreds of miles at a time in the winter. Some times if the roads clear I will cruise at 70-80mph. This is a question of mechanical safety on truck components not driving safety.
View 13 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 - Hesitates While Reversing - Buck And Jerk While Maintaining Speed?
New here. I have a 2001 F150 which i love but lately has been an issue. I started it up a few weeks ago after it set over night. i threw it in to reverse and notice it hesitating while reversing and it has small trouble accelerating but does buck and jerk while trying to maintain speed. So I took it to my well trusted mechanic and he ran compression test and ran the highly prolific OTC scanner on it and nothing. I have changed my mass flow sensor and I dont show any misfires or any codes pending. I did replace a busted catalytic convertor a couple months back. Im running out of places to turn.
View 6 RepliesFord 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 6 Speed Trans - Stuck In 6th Gear (Overdrive)
I have a 1999 F250 4-wheel drive with a 6-speed tranny. The tranny is several old but has only around 100k on a rebuild. Three times recently it has stuck in 6th gear (overdrive) and I had to get really rough with the stick to get to come out. Afterwards the stick felt "thick" for a while and eventually everything seems to go back to normal. Not for sure but it may have started after pulling a heavy load, around 16k, which is not unusual for the truck. Other than the times it stuck and shortly after, the tranny seems perfect.
View 5 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Surge Or Revving When Getting Up To Cruising Speed
I've been getting a surge or revs when getting up to cruising speed before it drops into overdrive or or a constant speed. Happens around 1800-2200 rpm before up shifting to the next gear. More noticeable if under a load or going up a grade when it will hold gear longer before shifting. Only thing I can think of that would be related is the truck does lack some power on a cold start for the first couple miles before getting up to temp. I've cleaned the ebp sensor and it appears to be working correctly, reading within .1-.2 of BAR/MAP key one engine off. VGT solenoid is clean but have no real way to tell if it's working correctly. Other values icp/ipr temps fluid levels appear to be correct. Just changed the oil and it continues, changed the transmission oil and filter about 3000 miles ago. I've had this going on for about 1000. Started about the same time I changed tunes to PHP. They haven't been able to find anything in the tuning yet that could be causing this or if it is just making it show up now.
