Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2004 F250 - White Smoke Coming Out Of Exhaust
Having trouble with 6.0 powerstoke white smoke out exhaust. We have installed egr delete and still have white smoke and water coming out of exhaust not as much as before. Took it back apart to see if we did anything wrong everything look ok. We did a compression test on all cylinders they check out ok.

I noticed a rough idle after driving an hour with a 6000 lb trailer and stopped at an offramp. Had no performance issues to that point in an hour drive. Then I noticed a good amount of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The idle felt just like when I had a contribution/balance code on #5 a year ago, and a new injector fixed that. Before long (10-20 minutes later) the idle got real loud, like a big knock/loud tick every revolution.
I had a bunch of stored codes, so I reset them and later found a P0281 - Cylinder 7 contribution/Balance and P0404 - EGR control circuit range/performance were the 2 that came back. I drove it 2 more hours to get home. It ran well under load, but coasting or stopped gave the loud knock, and stopped and idling was a rough, inconsistent idle. It even stalled on me 3 times when braking for a red light (auto trans). There was a lot of white smoke all the time, plus a little dark smoke on acceleration.
What would you recommend for troubleshooting steps? I could put a new injector in #7 and clean the EGR valve, but want to have a good idea that will fix it first. Is there a good chance I have a messed up piston in #7 now?
Codes I cleared:
P0148 Fuel delivery error
P0234 turbo overboost (i know i need to pull and clean the turbo anyway, unrelated to today's issue)
P0281 Cylinder 7 contribution/Balance
P0404 EGR control circuit range/performance
P0670 Glow plug (I had the module unplugged a while ago)
P0683 Glow plug (I had the module unplugged a while ago)
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Decent Amount Of White Smoke Started Coming Out Of The Exhaust
2007 F550 with the 6.0. About 2 months ago I replaced the EGR cooler with a Bulletproof cooler. Truck ran well for a few weeks. Then I started getting the "turbo fart". I stopped using the truck until I had an issue with another truck. I was stuck so I sent the 07 out without cleaning the turbo. This morning a decent amount of white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. The smoke would sometimes get a bit gray. Going up hill it didn't have much power at all.
View 8 RepliesFord 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2012 - Exhaust Smell Coming From Truck - White Smoke
Today I drove to dinner in my 2012 6.7 with no problems then on the way home my brother said he noticed my truck was white smoking quite a bit and he said there was a very strong exhaust smell coming from my truck ( he was in his car behind me) I ran a diagnostic test and what came up was code P0401 (I believe that's right). Need to figure out what is going on with my truck before I take it to the mechanics and get charged up. The truck still has DPFs in it just has a DPF back exhaust and has a AFE cold air intake running on a stock tune. However I do have the DPF deletes and EGR delete sitting in my garage just haven't gotten them on the truck yet.
View 2 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Low Power Before Boost Kicks In / Idling Rough With Blueish White Smoke Coming Out Of Exhaust
I just looked back and it has been since July 7th that my girl has been sitting in my shop. Well this past weekend I finally got her back together and started. It took a while to build pressure but she finally came to life..
While I am thrilled that she is running again i have low power before the boost kicks in and is idling rough with a blueish- white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Once i kick her a little she will get up and go but I've never had the smoke before.
I'm thinking maybe a bad injector???
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Constant White Smoke When Warmed Up And Applying Throttle / Smells Like Coolant Coming Out Of Exhaust
Newbie hear to the 6.0L's. But I'm learning an awful lot really quick from all of you here. I've read lots of tech stuff on these EGR Coolers, oil coolers, FICM tests. This is what I got happening right now.
2004 F-250 6.0L. Today was 45 degrees in Reno. 5400 ft elevation. Tried to start it without block heater. Would not even crank. It tried to crank but sounded like it locked up on first crank. Tried again, nothing. Same. Tried yet again and finally got to getting the engine to crank, but wouldn't start after about 5 seconds of cranking. Waited a little while not wanting to burn out my FICM, then tried again. Same as previous, would crank but not turnover. Checked batteries. Both were over 12.3 V cold, motor not running. This next time, turned key on and let it sit in ON position for about a minute. Then cranked and it took about 5 seconds and then the motor finally cranked over. Lots of black smoke as usual for a cold start like this. Battery volts after cranking over and running were now both over 13.6 V.
Keep in mind the truck has started better than this before in 15 degree weather just about a month ago.
After it started I noticed what appeared to be oil/coolant residue directly underneath trucks transmission area. It was not tranny, but in that area. I got under the truck and can see this fluid coming from EGR Cooler area.
Now for the smoke. Just stared smoking on start up. White smoke. Then it would disappear as engine warmed up. Now its constant white smoke when warmed up and applying the throttle. Smells like coolant coming out of exhaust. Not diesel.
I parked truck facing downwards on my driveway. Then I checked EGR Valve. When I pulled it it was WET. Not dry. Peeked in EGR Valve hole, didn't see coolant. Just wetness. I did change gasket and rings on it the day before as well.
As for FICM, it reads 47.9 Volts on key turn, 48.1 on cranking and 47.8 running. FICM good by all standard 6.0L literature. Degas bottle passed pressure test holding near 15 PSI for 20 minutes! No oil in degas bottle that I can see.
Truck is stock. Is my egr cooler and oil cooler shot? Would a bad egr cooler or oil cooler cause this awful cold start? When I plug in the block heater, it starts NO PROBLEM, but still white smoke. Also, NO loss of power at any time.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: White Smoke From Exhaust?
yesterday I went out started my truck and white smoke started coming out my exhaust so I turned it off waited a bit started it back up let it run for a bit smoke went away drove it about 60 miles. Later that night it did the same thing but I was 2 gallons short on coolant drove it another 60 miles ran fine. Next morning decided to take it to a shop put more coolant in it drove maybe 20 miles to shop got there turned it off everything was fine never over heated once. So this shop is now telling me my trucks hydro locked and I steamed the EGR valve. And there telling me it's gonna be $8000 to fix it .

I was passed the other day by a newer (square mirrors) nice-looking Super Duty that was slightly spewing white exhaust smoke. As a life long truck driver, I know a few diesel smells (and I kinda like some ). But, this was so pungent that it was irritating my eyes inside my own cab.
It was so irritating and nasty smelling, that I had to slow down (to let him gain some ground) and open my windows to clear out my truck. So that I may be better informed, what could've caused this?
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Blowing White Smoke Out Of The Exhaust
I have a 2006 F350 6.0 litre diesel. The other day I started it up drove away and it was blowing huge plumes of white smoke out of the exhaust. Shut it off.....started it up again after a while then went on a long drive and it went away. What that was?
View 6 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: EGR Delete - Gas Engine Exhaust Rumble / White Smoke
After a couple of setbacks, including forgetting to install 3 out of the 4 orings on the oil cooler, I got the IPR Gen2 delete installed. I have a couple of issues since getting it started. I have low boost, I know the up pipe for the turbo is seated well, really surprised about that. However, the exhaust pipe may have a slight leak, but not positive. Finally, the last on this issue, I have a ripped MAP hose that I'm going to replace.
Next issue is that I hear what almost sounds like a gas engine exhaust rumble from the front of the truck. What it could be? I had white smoke initially coming out of the exhaust, but it cleared up after getting everything up to temp and taking it for a ride down the road. On a side note, the leak that I had from my previous thread seems to be gone now.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2006 - Code P0263 - Engine Misses - White Smoke From Exhaust?
I have a 2006 F350. It started running rough and white smoke from the exhaust. I did an injector buzz test and found no codes. Cylinder contribution check showed cylinder one was not functioning. I replaced number one injector, cleaned injector cup installed new injector and copper washer. Engine runs the same. If it was a wiring harness issue should that have shown up in the buzz test?
View 8 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 F250 Puffing Out White Smoke
I just bought a 2005 ford f250 6.0 diesel. Im used to gas engines but not to familiar with diesel yet. But my problems are it puffing out white smoke. I've just did an oil change with full synthetic motorcraft filter. I changed out the fuel filters. Ran some fuel cleaner put some oil additive (both diesel hot shot brand) . Drained out any water and cleaned out the pump. Took out the egr and cleaned it.
I just installed a coolant filter and drained out most of the ford gold and used something with CAT ECI rating. The smoke smells like unburnt fuel. I'm not losing any coolant. I bought a scan gauge. The fcim doesn't drop below 47 volts. The coolant and engine temp stay around the same. As weird as it sounds it won't smoke all the time. It will smoke really bad then it won't like nothing ever happened. Besides it being an injector failing or something along with fuel pressure I'm not sure.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Bullet Proofed But Grey White Smoke
Just picked my 2005 excursion from being bulletproofed. Arp studs, oem head gaskets, turbo cleaned rebuilt, blue spring mod, 8 new Motorcraft injectors, rebuilt heads surfaced, new Ford oil cooler, egr plugged delete, sct x4 on 2nd tow tune, new radiator, new fan clutch, new water pump, and sinister delete kit. I got almost home to last stop sign and took off and noticed grey/white smoke.
Then drove so more for 20 minutes. Everything you come to complete stop and take off it does this. On start up it will puff a little puff then go away. Is this normal after a rebuild and go away after some miles have been put on engine. Or should I be worried. It runs awesome now and idles so smooth with tons of power on tow tune.
Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 E450 - Excessive Smoke Out Of Exhaust
I have an option to buy a e450 with a 6.0, 100k mi, with a utility body. I have the same thing but an 03 with a 7.3. this van has some known issues, biggest being it sat for a year and a half. it was parked due to excessive smoke out the exhaust. Ford shop diagnosed it as bad head gaskets, personally I am not believing it. There is no evidence of puking on the degas cap, and someone removed the band clamp from the down pipe and there is nothing but a little soot, so I don't really think a turbo seal either. The batteries were dead tonight so I am going to take a set of batteries down and see what happens. he is only asking 6000 as is. I am thinking probably egr cooler, egr valve or injector problem. If I buy it I am going to install a new oil cooler, blue spring, clean the turbo and delete the egr. Late 2004 engine btw.
View 14 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2005 - Smoking White Or Gray At Idle But Blowing Black Smoke On Acceleration
Well my problem went from bad to worse. My 05 started running rough at idle, then smoothed out a bit but started smoking on acceleration a little. At this point it felt like it had more power than ever before and even ran smoother running up to 3k RPM before shifting (manual transmission). But now it's smoking so bad, I can't really drive it. It's smoking white or gray at idle but blowing black smoke on acceleration. I had a cylinder 5 contribution code but with the amount of smoke it's hard to believe only one injector is a problem. I pulled the EGR valve and it doesn't look stuck open but I'm going to replace it anyway.
View 3 RepliesFord 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Excessive Blueish Smoke Coming From Exhaust At Idle Mostly While Warming Up
Lately I have noticed a lot of blueish smoke coming from my exhaust at idle mostly while warming in the morning though it would do it if the truck idled for a few minutes. I took it to the dealer because I have fords ESP but the tech couldn't get the truck to smoke and wasn't getting any codes so he sent it back with a clean bill of health. After getting it back I noticed it smoking again so I picked up the egr valve kit pulled the valve and cleaned it as best I could and replaced the seals, that was last night. This morning it was blowing more smoke than it has before and has continued all day whether cold or warm. I just changed the oil last week and it's still full so it isn't burning any. Head gaskets were done along with studs last month, egr is obviously intact, cat is gone. I'm really at a loss for this, It's an 07 f350 scsb 6.0...

I have a 2001 F450 7.3 chassis cab with just over 100k. I have a new problem... So far on two different occasions the service engine came on followed by a loss of power under a load and white smoke from the exhaust. Took it to the shop the first time, they determined it to be a dirty air filter, which seemed odd since it just happened all of a sudden. They changed air & fuel filter, problem gone- for two weeks..
View 8 RepliesFord 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001 - White Exhaust Smoke When Letting Off Throttle
2001 SD F-250 SuperCrew 4WD, 7.3L (completely stock), 114K miles, automatic
We took Dad's SD for a 600-mile trip yesterday and today. The oil had 2000 miles on it, and we checked it before we left. The oil level was half-way down the hatch-mark, so we had added a little over a quart of oil to top it off, and I think that we may have added a little too much. Last night, when we got to the hotel and got out of the truck while it idled, a lot of white smoke that smelled like burning oil (like when you spill oil on an exhaust manifold) was fogging out of the exhaust.
It did this for a minute or two, then cleared up. All day today, on the way home (300 miles), about every time that I let off of the throttle either going down the interstate or stopping at a red light or stop sign, white smoke would pour out of the exhaust briefly, then stop when accelerating or in the throttle going down the road. What is causing this? Would too much oil (a little over a quart too full) make it smoke like this? The truck runs strong, starts and idles good, and no 'check engine' lights came on the dash.
Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Slight Miss At Idle - White And Blue Smoke From The Exhaust
Early 99 7.3. Runs ok has a slight miss at idle however every injector when unhooked makes a change. Has white and blue smoke From the exhaust. Has enough blow by to blow the oil cap off as your unscrewing it. My question is, I know engine restore is bad for these trucks but I can't afford to rebuild the engine. If I run the restore and then clean the IRP once the truck dies is this going to mess anything else up. Do you think it will by me a few months to save up for a rebuild
