Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Click Noise Behind Steering Wheel

My Elantra has been making a click noise every time I turn the steering wheel. The noise comes from somewhere in the area behind the wheel, not from the engine apartment.

If I turn the steering without turning on engine, the noise could still be heard. So I am quite sure its' not a power steering problem.

So far there is no effect on driving, I could turn normally and the power steering works well.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with the indicator light switch as they still work as normal.

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Creaking Noise While Turning Steering Wheel To Left?

I bought an '08 Elantra about a month ago. A few weeks after buying it i noticed a creaking noise while turning the steering wheel to the left. It happens at low speeds or when stopped, but I haven't heard anything at high speeds. I can't tell for sure but it sounds closer to the inside of the car than the outside and will happen the entire time the steering wheel is turning to the left. No sound turning it to the right.

My brother liked my car so we test drove 3 other Elantras, 2 '08s and an '09. Two of them made the exact same noise. He ended up liking the one that didn't but after a while his started making the EXACT same noise too. I'm thinking this must be a common problem with the '07-'10 Elantras as all 4 cars had the same noise, but I can't find anything about it.

My right strut is bad and I'm having both front struts replaced Monday, so if it's something that can be done while he's doing the struts I'd like to find out before he takes everything apart so he doesn't have to do it twice.

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: 2008 - Steering Wheel Makes A Binding Noise When Turning

I have a 2008 Elantra with 59,000 miles. When it is warm out (70 F+), the sterering wheel makes a binding noise (squeeking noise - it is hard to describe) when turning. It doesn't do this all the time and it is much more noticeable when it is warm out. The temps are usually mild. This is a recent problem as I haven't noticed it before.

Should I be concerned about this? I want to get it checked before the 60,000 mile mark in case this is a serious issue such as rack and pinion steering problems.

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Knocking Noise In Steering When Idling And Turning The Wheel Back And Forth

I have a 2007 elantra. I drove it for a while, then my ma needed a car (her tercel was a little unsafe) so I traded her. She loves the car, but as sometimes is the case, her dealer is not very nice. She has a severe side to side knocking noise in the steering- can be easily duplicated by sitting with the car idling and turning the wheel back and forth, even a little. Doesn't correspond with driving over bumps unless the wheel is inadvertently turned by the bump. If the suspension is unloaded (front wheels off the ground), noise disappears. No EPS lights, no codes in any system.

Listened with a stethoscope inside the car- not that loud through column within car. Inner and outer tie rods are tight, noise is not heard loudly with stethoscope through struts, upper mounts, lower arms. Under the car with loaded suspension (rhino ramps), noise is deafening in the rack, with a stethoscope. Dealer told her it needs a steering rack, I definitely understand why they would say that as the noise is clearly audible through the aluminum housing directly below the entrance of the column shaft into the rack. Only TSB I found was for a worm shaft flexible coupling, but the TSB says this is bump related.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Low Speed Steering Wheel Squeak

I have a 2006 LX with 25k miles.. within the past 1,500 miles or so, I notice there is a squeaking/creaking/rubbing sound coming from the steering wheel column when I turn (and cut, specifically) the wheel at stopped and low speeds (such as pulling out of the driveway or maneuvering into a parking spot). At faster speeds this doesn't happen.

I intend on bringing this to the dealer. What should I expect, and should I bring this in ASAP?

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Steering Wheel Squeak - Bad Rack And Pump

Had the car at the dealer over the weekend for oil change. Told them I was hearing a squeak when turning the wheel, not just when it is cold. Anyway they told me that my rack is leaking and they ordered a rack and P/S Pump for some reason? Does that seem normal at 38,000 miles. Also I asked if when they replace the rack do the align it, answer was no, even though parts are under warranty. I drive mostly highway but maybe 2 miles in the city where the roads have been pretty bad while construction is going on, Not sure if that hurt the rack or something else. The dealer hit me I think at 15,000 mi to change the P/S Oil for some reason, so it is all covered but I just think it is odd to go that suddenly. What next? I don't abuse the car at all.

Elantra GD (2013+) :: Clunking Noise Coming From Steering Area / High Pitch Squeak When Fan Turned On

I've been noticing some new noises in my Elantra in the last couple of months.

First, there's a clunking noise that sounds like it's coming from the steering area. It usually happens when I back up and rotate the steering wheel, like when I back out of my parking spot. More often it's in the morning.

Second, when I turn the fan on there is a high pitched squeal. If you turn the fan off you can hear the squeal more clearly for a moment as the fans die down. This one only started happening in the last couple of weeks.

I guess I'll have to take it in and get them to take a look. Last year it was a squeaking in the pano roof which only happened when it was hot out. They seemed to have lessened it but it wasn't gone completely.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Steering Wheel Sticks At Highway Speeds

This has happened multiple times but this last time was the dangerous one. I was driving home from work on Friday on the tollway which is very straight but does have some slight turns in it (construction). So I am at highway speeds for some time and one of these slight turns comes up. I try to turn my wheel but nothing happens. I apply more and more force until it finally decides to turn and by that time I am applying so much force, it jerks really hard. If the car didn't finally decide to turn, I would have hit the highway barrier. I am lucky that no one was next to me or I might have hit them.

-This only happens at sustained highway speeds, city driving is perfect.
-It doesn't happen every time I am on the highway, it is intermittent.
-It does not have a bias with regard to direction (left turn or right).
-I have put some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my reservoir to add fluid to my system with whatever was currently in there when I bought the car @ 75K miles. Car currently has 130K miles. Is there some sort of write up for PS maintenance/flush? I need to pull the return to drain, right?
-I do have a rubber on rubber squeak sound in the front right when I go over a bump.

Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Creaking Noise Coming From Wheel When Warmed Up And At Low Speeds

So my 2012 Elantra developed a "creaking" noise coming from the wheel when warmed up and at low speeds. It almost sounded like really old heavy door when it opens that goes "thunk thunk thunk" as it sticks.

I usually work on my own cars, but for so me reason I took it to the dealership because I didn't know where it was coming from. After a 30 minute test drive to reproduce the issue, he took another 30 minutes to tell me that an "axle bolt" was loose and needed to be tightening.

I've never heard of an axle bolt - I'm only asking now because the issue's come back a few months later, and I know the dealership's gonna charge me again if I ask. Can't be that hard if it didn't take him more than 20 minutes to fix. Are they referring to the main cv/axle nut?

Camry :: 2011 LE - Sloppy Feel To Steering Most Noticeable At Freeway Speeds

2011 Camry LE with what I would call a mushy or sloppy feel to the steering. It is most noticeable at freeway speeds and requires an almost constant driver input to maintain the car in my lane with slight corrections back and forth right and left. This is fatiguing on long drives. It feels like there is too much power steering assist at higher speeds, although an independent mechanic said he didn't think it has variable assist power steering. There is no pulling in one direction. Alignment has been checked and it's ok, and tires are balanced and properly inflated.

Strong wind or large trucks passing me cause me to struggle to maintain the car in it's lane. Toyota dealer mechanics and the Toyota rep checked it and gave me the "drives as designed" answer and that there is nothing wrong with it. I had an independent mechanic look it over and he said there is nothing wrong and that there is nothing that can be done to change the feel of the steering. It is hydraulic steering and not the electronic power steering. I have test driven other Camrys as well as Corollas and other makes of cars and they all drive with a more sure feel to the steering and I just want my Camry to drive like that.

Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Intermittent Grinding Noise Coming From Left Front Wheel At Low Speeds

Over the past few months I'd noticed an intermittent grinding noise coming from my left front wheel at low speeds. I took it in once but it refused to play along so I finally managed to catch it on camera and let the dealership listen to it. They booked me for today, saying it sounded like a wheel bearing (to which I agreed) and I dropped her off around ten, not expecting it to cooperate for the second time.

I got a call from the dealer around 2 PM saying that they were able to duplicate the noise and that when they took the left front wheel off and ran the car on the lift with the rest of the wheels off the ground, the noise went away. Even stranger still, when they put the wheel on the tire balancing machine and spun it, gronch, gronch...gronch, gronch....gronch, gronch. It was coming from inside the wheel! I gave them permission to dismount the tire from the wheel and about ten minutes later I got another call saying they'd found a handful of tiny hard rubber balls inside the mounted wheel/tire assembly that were rolling down the inside of the wheel and causing the grumbling at low speed.

Here's the kicker: they were in all four wheels! The tech even saved them for me so I could take a look and they don't look like anything mass-produced; some are larger than others, some are round and some are oval-shaped but when I dropped one on the glass advisor desk, it made a very clear 'Clink!'.

Volvo - XC90 :: Groaning Noise When Turning Steering Wheel During Low Speeds And Stopped

105K miles, developing a groaning noise when turning steering wheel during low speeds and stopped. Can feel slightly through steering column. No other problems, no clunking or any grinding noises, just "groaning" sound on initial movement. Fluid is full. While searching fix, I found this article on the C70 model, sounds like I might have same thing on my XC90. [URL] ....

Ford Brakes/Suspension :: Faint Grinding Noise When Turning The Steering Wheel At Low Speeds

One my F350 with 175,000 miles on it, at low speeds when turning the steering wheel it seems as if it has two places during use that it rubs or has an oblong spot in it. I have 285 tires on it and have for years.

Kind of like if you were turning a shaft in a seal and it rubbed or was rough. It makes a faint, muffled, barely audible grinding noise or feel. I have a lift and level of about 4" and 285s for years. This just started in the last 5 months or so.

Elantra HD (2006-10) :: Loose Steering Wheel - Can Be Moved Up Down / Right Or Left

I have a 2010 Elantra GLS with a loose steering wheel. When you hold the wheel, it can be moved about 1/2 inch up, down, left or right. The issue appears to be in the column, because the intermediate shaft joint under the dash does not move, i.e., no slop whatsoever from that point down. The front suspension is as tight as can be, the car just turned 40k. Im thinking maybe something with the tilt mechanism?

I have a 2007 hyundai elantra gls (80,000miles) that shimmies at 12 and 40 mph. The steering wheel stays still but the rest of the car wobbles.

I've replaced the tires and the rims and had them rotated, balanced and hub rings put on.

I've also replaced the motor mounts. (This is probably unrelated but I also just had the serpentine belt, water pump, and all the other belts replaced as well.)

I can hit the gas and get through the wobbly speeds and it seems to be fine....but I drive around 40 mph most of the time!

Golf V R32 :: Vibration Mostly In Steering Wheel When Driving On Freeway

Been really busy lately and havent worked on car. Any way it's been about two months after lowering on hpa shs coils. Rides great but I have had the two following observations.

1. When I'm on the freeway at above 65 a big increase in vibration mostly in the steering wheel. I also rotated tires front to back as they are directional at the same time.

2. When I first set off there is a clunking/adjusting sound from the front right side. It seems to be connected with the rotation of the tire. Goes away as I drive down the block.

What other possible things could be causing this, the shocks? What else could I check on my own by opening the hood?

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Loud Noise When Turning The Steering Wheel

I'm having an issue with my 2004 Elantra.

When I turn the ignition in my car, it makes a very loud noise at the front of the car. This goes away after about 3 seconds, but when I turn the wheel to either side, it makes a very high screeching sound. This persists until I've been driving for a few minutes then it goes away.

I hesitate to say the following, but it also feels as if my steering wheel is a bit "harder" to turn, but maybe it is my imagination. What it could be? I checked power steering fluid and it is at normal levels.
