Camry :: 2010 XLE - Transmission Squeal From Engine Compartment
So I just took my 2010 Camry xle-4 in today for brakes and a squealing noise coming from the engine compartment, 76,000 on the odometer. Thought they were going to tell me one of the two belts needed to be replaced and to my surprise they tell me it is the transmission. If you put it in park the noise is gone. I have the 100,000 Toyota backed extended warranty. the tech stated what I did not know until today - sealed transmission. They had to requested an adjuster (warranty requirement) to come out and look at the vehicle prior to ordering a new transmission - no repair option. Vehicle shifts with no issues, drives fine.
View 1 RepliesCorolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: Manual Transmission - Noise From Engine Department
I have Corolla 1.6 dual VVTi (year - 2009.), manual transmission, 1ZR engine, for about a year, ~50000miles on clock. About a month ago from a engine part it began to produce sound that can be heard on the accompanying recordings.
for these sounds is characteristic that:
- can be heard only while driving and depressing a gas pedal, its not heard when I am changing rmps while the car is stationary..
-only when engine is warm
-from about 1900rpm to 3000rpm.
-Toyota service is not useful, they fail to locate the source of the sound.
I submit sound recordings that I made by placing a microphone in the motor department.

Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Manual Transmission - No Start But Cranking
2011 w/ 80k 6 spd man w/column start.
The last couple of months getting first crank attempt symptoms. Cranks fine but won't turn over. 2nd time fine. No OBD codes. Other times np at all. But today big problem.
- Started fine @ 5 degrees F (unusual for area)
- Warmed up fine
- Left in parking lot for 10 min
- Attempted start, could not. Then again the next 8 times.
- Finally wore down battery. Had it towed to dealer (I could feel the pocket suction)
Explained issue to dealer. 3 hrs later they called. Said it was the battery, had only 290 cc left. I explained before I wore it down there was plenty of power avail. Whatever, screwed anyway -- pay $115 diag or $149 for battery, just take the battery I said.
Took it home, seems fine for now but explained if I have to take my very sick son out in cold weather tomorrow there will be repercussions. Anyway, the whole situation is bizarre.
I've looked on other threads with auto tns and brake switch issues but that does not apply to manual. Only requirement is step on clutch. I read about crankshaft sensor but no codes. Only thing I found was perhaps loose fuses or wiring but dealer said they checked that and whole system is good.
Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Manual Transmission Blocks Out 2nd When Cold
Have this problem when the temperature is below 30F? This problem appeared one day when the car was parked outside overnight and the temperature dipped into the 20s. It refuses to upshift to 2nd from 1st unless driven for 10 minutes or so and will grind when downshifting to first even from 3 mph. The upshift to 2nd feels like a wall blocking so I just end up shifting to 3rd straight from 1st until it's warmed up for 10 minutes or so. Worn syncros? Shift fork/linkages? Dragging clutch? I'm sure the dealer will want to replace the fluid first but new fluid will not fix mechanical problems if indeed that's what it is. Strange part is that both 1 and 2 both started to have the problem at the same time so how can both synchros go out at once and this problem only appeared this winter and not last winter so it doesn't seem like its an inherent problem from the start.
View 8 RepliesFord - Ranger :: 2011 - Manual Transmission Gets Very Stiff After Sitting For A While
I have a 2011 Ranger with four wheel drive, a manual transmission and 34000 miles on it. The transmission gets very stiff after sitting for a while. At the worst I can't get it into first or reverse at all without hunting through all the other gears to find one it will shift into to get things moving. Is this normal for this vehicle or should I worry?

Just curious. is it possible to convert my auto camry to manual transmission? also, how much would it be? where can i go?
View 5 RepliesCamry :: 1993 - Manual Transmission - No Tachometer
I have just acquired a 93 Camry with manual transmission and no tachometer. However, I have a auto one that I am wrecking with a tachometer which I want to fit to the manual vehicle which I will keep in commission.
Where it is connected to the engine wiring? Is there a sender unit? Or does it sense pulses from the distributor?
The service manual that I have does not describe it.
Camry :: 2010 - Removing 6 Speed Manual Transmission
I am in the nasty position of having to remove my 6-spd manual transmission to investigate the nasty whine in it. The dealer says $2300 to fix it and the parts are $100, so I am going to do it myself. I have been unable to find a repair manual yet for the 2010 Camry and I was wondering for step by step for removal of the tranny. I don't need a lot of detail, but it is nice to know the order in broad strokes.
View 7 RepliesCamry :: 2010 Manual Transmission - Hard Shifting Into 2nd Gear
Just curious if there are any other 2010 owners with any difficulty shifting gears in their manual transmission camrys? I noticed during my test drive that I grinded my way into 2nd once... I thought it might have just been my nervousness with a new clutch at the time. However, I've since put 300 miles on the car and I still have trouble putting it into second gear on a daily basis. Sometimes it grinds a bit, and sometimes it catches or a half second before it pops in. All the gears OTHER than 2nd gear go in like butter as you would expect with a new transmission. I'm not new to a clutch... this is at least my 4th car with a stick, so I don't think I'm doing anything out of the ordinary when shifting.
It reminds me of some older (100,000+ mile Nissan) cars I've had in the past... the syncromesh was wearing out and it would grind going into second or third, so I put in some RedLine MTL and got a little more life out of the transmission... but there shouldn't be a need for that kind of thing on a car with less than 1000 miles on it?!
Camry :: 2006 Manual Transmission - Shaking In 1st Gear Starting
In the last 8 months I'm having a shaking of the car when starting in first gear (manual trans).
I thought it was a loose engine mount - had it checked and one replaced and still the shaking is there.
I notice it is more pronounced when the engine is hot and starting on a decline.
Since I've had this Camry (almost 8 yrs), I've had the clutch changed 2x. First time was just wear and tear. The person who replaced it put the fly wheel on backwards! Drove it for 3 years until it just broke. Replaced by another shop who couldn't believe I got three years out of the bad job.
At any rate, this doesn't feel like a clutch-related issue. No slippage feeling or other issues when moving through the gears at higher speeds. But maybe they did a bad job too?
Camry :: 2009 - Replacing Clutch Slave Cylinder And Manual Transmission Fluid
First of all this is also my first camry and I noticed that there is only 1 reservoir for the slave and the brakes - which is unique to cars Ive owned in the past. My question is when I remove my slave cylinder from the trans and unhook the hard lines from it would this introduce air into the brake lines since they share the same reservoir? Should I remove the brake fluid from the reservoir before I disconnect the slave? I am wondering because If i just disconnect the lines brake fluid will leak from them between the time I disconnect the old slavecyl and hook the new one up.
Also regarding the trans fluid. my le has 80,000 miles on it and I am not sure whether or not the previous owner ever changed it before. I am having a hard time finding information about how much fluid and exactly which fluid to use. All I know is that gl-4 is the safest choice, butis it ok to use red line mt-90 or amsoil MTF? I dont want to ruin the trans by putting in the wrong fluid and/or wrong quantity.
Camry :: 2011 Camry: How To Check The Transmission Oil On 2011 LE (2ARFE)
how do I check the transmission oil on my 2011 Camry LE (2ARFE). I am curious as this car has 98K miles now and I cannot locate the dipstick for the Transmission oil. I got the car 2 years ago at 89K miles.
A technician once told me it's going to be a flush.
I only do 135 miles every week and I am located in Africa.
How do I check the transmission oil and how often should I change it?
Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Squeal Noise From Front Tires / Loud Humming When Rotated
I bought my 2011 Sonata with 27k miles on it. After a while (few months) I noticed on occasion when turning I would get a screeching/squeal noise from the front tires. Only happened during certain turns (U turns I noticed where higher chance of happening).
I rotated the tires (Front to the rear, Rear to the front), and then there was a loud humming noise. I got it checked with the dealer and they confirmed tires were cupping (uneven treadwear right?) . So now its been 10,000 miles and the noise is the same. I just got an alignment done and there has been not much of a change.
So, other than getting new tires, should I get the tires balanced? Or just rotate them once more so that the rear return to the front again? Will I have to get another alignment done?
Prius (Gen 2) :: Winding Noise In Reverse With Manual Transmission?
Yesterday while backing up, my Prius made a very weird noise that I have never heard it make before- it sounded like the "winding" noise a car with a manual transmission makes when its in reverse It was going wa-wa-wa and once I stopped the car, it stopped and hasn't done it again.
View 2 RepliesSaab - 9-3 :: Grinding Noise From Manual Transmission In 3rd Gear
I have a 98 saab 900 se turbo.90000 miles on it. Just had a new clutch kit/throwout bearing and master cylinder clutch installed, as the clutch was going bad.
When I shift the car (while driving) from 2nd into 3rd/4th/5th gear, and accelerate I suddenly notice what sounds like a "grinding"/raspy noise that stays with the car while in those gears. It does not occur in 1st or 2nd , although it seems that in first gear the rpms go up real fast now (could the gears be slipping again?? this is a brand new clutch..).
The second I shift to 3rd gear and give it gas, the noise shows up instantly. Now when I let my foot off the gas, the noise goes away 100%. The second I give it gas again, it comes back. Also I don't believe the noise increases or decreases in relation to the speed of the vehicle. It seems to stay constant no matter what speed I'm at, as long as I'm actively giving it gas.
It occurs every time I drive..not sure what to do and what causes this..maybe I just need to check the transmission fluid?
Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Transmission - Valve Knocking Noise From Engine Zone
I have a 2011 Sonata GLS with 127k miles on it and I'm trying to diagnose a problem, possibly with transmission.
Since I bought the car at 115k miles I started hearing a noise from engine zone, which appears quite rarely. Noise resembles valve knocking, appears mostly at traffic lights and colder weather (evenings). I was trying to catch the sound by recording it while using emergency brake at D pos. but the sound disappeared right after releasing brake pedal.
Describing in a different way it sounds like a propeller touching something with its blades. The sound also appears at 1900rpm on any gear (mostly when slightly releasing gas pedal around 2k rpm).
While trying to understand/fix the issue I used:
- liqui moly valve cleaner and engine flush
- techtron injection cleaner
- replaced spark plugs
These operations had almost 0 effect on car behavior. The symptoms boil down to a torque converter. Transmission shifts fine, I was going to try transmission fluid change ( a full change by dealer), however it may do more harm, so I'm not sure yet.
Ford F-150 (2009-2014) :: 2011 - Grinding Noise / High Pitched Squeal On Front End?
This evening, my F150 with 2,600 miles developed a high pitched squeal, much like you might experience on an older vehicle with failing front brakes. Yes, that same squeal/grind the brakes make...metal on metal. It came in instantly while at highway speeds. It was VERY loud. The pitch didn't really change with speed...it was pretty consistant going slow or fast. There was no vibration, chatter or growl as I would expect with a failing bearing.
It was definately in the driveline/brakes. I was 10 miles away from a friends house, so I turned around and took it back to his place. Shortly after turning around, it quieted, only sounding when I would turn ( like a wheel bearing would when being side loaded ). I looked at the brake disks, thinking something was grinding on one of them. The outsides of the disks looked fine. Due to the shields on the inside, I couldn't see.
Later in the evening, I had to drive it back home, about 50 miles. Again, it was quiet unless turning fairly hard. By the time I got home, the squeal had turned into an intermitant growl/thump, as if a warped rotor was banging on the caliper. The noise was 1 to 1 with the rotation of the driveline. But still no vibration. Brakes work perfectly and the noise doesn't change with brake use. Backing up and turning hard results in a variety of sounds, including squeaks.
The hubs and CV joints felt cool. The brake disks were not hot as if they were dragging.
It is 4x4 / 3.7l
Dodge - Caliber :: Grinding Noise Coming From Manual Transmission In 3rd
I have a 2007 Dodge Caliber manual transmission. When I shift the car (while driving) from 2nd into 3rd/4th/5th gear, I suddenly notice what sounds like a "grinding" noise that stays with the car while in those gears. It's clearly an abnormal noise and noticeable but not obnoxious. It does not occur in 1st or 2nd (although it seems that maybe at higher rpms in 2nd gear I begin to notice it coming, though maybe it's my imagination), but the second I shift to 3rd gear and give it gas, the noise shows up instantly.
It occurs every time I drive, but I don't notice any other weird noises or problems with the car and the clutch feels good. I haven't been able to find any leaking anywhere underneath the car. It has approx. 92,000 miles and is a 1.8 liter 4-cylinder. I've spoken with a few folks and I've been given the following ideas:
1) bad clutch/assembly (replace clutch kit)
2) bad throwout bearing
3) bad bearing inside transmission associated with 3rd,4th,5th gear rod (?)
4) low transmission oil, 3-5 gears not oiled enough and causing noise
5) maybe nothing to do with transmission at all?
I plan on taking the transmission apart this week with a mechanically-inclined friend of mine and if I have a good idea of what it could be, that may save us a lot of time by not having to take unnecessary things apart (ie. tranny vs bellhousing).
