View 1 RepliesHip Replacement :: Spinal Or General Anaesthetic?
I am booked in for my first hip replacement surgery next Wednesday. I was really surprised to hear that my surgeon does this under spinal anaesthetic, I've been told I will be awake but oblivious to my surroundings. Just wondered if anyone else had surgery this way and can reassure me. I am 45yrs old with osteoarthritis, I require both hips to be replaced but surgeon only does one at a time with at least 6 months in between for recovery. Any advice or reassurance will be gratefully received!

Due to have op on hip next month and I'm not sure whether to have a general anaesthetic or epidural. Part of me would like to be knocked out for the whole procedure, but I want to be up and about as quickly as possible.
View 27 RepliesBronchiectasis :: General Anaesthetic Is Dangerous?
I have a knee operation on the 29th June & I have been trying to find out if a general anaesthetic is more dangerous for people with Bronchiectasis. I've had no luck so far so I thought I'd ask you lovely people as you always have the answers. I've had 11 operations in the past & this will be my 12th & I've always been ok after the GA but this time with my symptoms I'm not sure if I should be getting my self ready for any complications ?

View 7 RepliesKnee :: Anaesthetic For TKR - Epidural Nerve Block Or General?
I have my op coming up in two weeks on 17 September and my surgeon tells me that the would prefer me to have epidural and nerve block instead of a general as it will lessen the chance of DVT post-op.
i have always had a general for other ops and the thought of being awake during all that sawing, drilling and screwing going on is not comfortable, to say the least. Some of the people I know who have had it done this way say that the sedative they give puts you off the planet and you don't know much about it. I'll probably go with the idea anyway, just a bit cautious I suppose.
anybody else had this experience? Was it ok?
Varicose Vein Treatment Under General Anaesthetic Fear
I'm due in for varicose vein treatment this week and I have been advised to have this done under a General Anaesthetic because all of my veins cannot be treated under a Local. I'm also super anxious that even under a local I'll need chilling out!
I'm absolutely petrified, I've called the hospital, spoken to my gp etc and all seem so unworried and matter of fact about it. I just want to talk to someone and not go into detail on their responses to help me get through this. I'm not sleeping, I'm so anxious that weight is falling off me, I am really really scared. It's not the procedure, I am at ease with that element, it is having the anaesthetic and I'm worried something will go wrong that is concerning me. What's worse is I know I'm ridiculous and that makes me worse. I've asked for sedation but I'm told this is dangerous. I've been told I'm more likely to have a real bad car accident etc but this doesn't help me because if there is a risk then it can happen.
I just feel like I'm not going to be able to go into the hospital on the day. I know that I need to get a grip but I just can't, I really cant.
For reference I'm a 40 yo male and have never had a General Anaesthetic before.
Ankle Surgery And Bone Spur :: Spinal Vs. General Anaesthetic?
Two years ago I broke my ankle and had pins and plates put in. On Monday I am having them taken out because they are irritating my tendon. I am also having a 'bone spur' basically shaved off and they are going to 'explore' the damage done to the tendon.
When I had them put in I had a general anaesthetic, but I wasn't asked what I'd prefer. This time, at a different hospital I have been.
I don't know what to do for the best. Obviously I can talk about this when I arrive on Monday I'd just like people opinions on which they prefer and why. Or even which they think would be suitable for my surgery.
I was fine after my anaesthetic last time, no side effects etc I just think I feel more comfortable not being 'put to sleep'... just in case. I'm a bit of a worrier!
I am leaning towards opting for the spinal anaesthetic combined with a bit of sedation as I do think I may get anxious. The only thing that is putting me off is what I will hear. Obviously they will be using screwdrivers etc and the thought of hearing them and knowing what they are doing makes me feel a little queasy!

View 64 RepliesFungal Nail Infection On My Toenails
In my teens I had a dreadful fungal nail infection on my toenails - for example the nail on my right sided big toe was completely yellow and crusting away, and all the nails were effected, but the doctor wouldn't prescribe the tablets I needed to clear it up as he said I was not old enough and that they can cause other problems anyway. So he always gave me anti fungal cream that I had to apply twice a day, but it never ever did a thing!
When I got a bit older (around 22, 6 years ago) I decided to give the tablets a go because I was so disgusted with my toenails and it was really effecting my self-confidence. To my amazement the infection started to clear up on most of my nails and things were looking positive. However I started to feel really ill, and thinking it was the tablets, I stopped taking them. My nails still for the most part looked good though.
But now my fungal infection is back again, and whilst my big toenails look almost normal and fine, the other toes, especially on my left foot, are a bit manky, some are even yellow. I don't know what to do about this really and was hoping someone could advise me. I would usually go to the doctors, but I am currently signed off work with what they say is anxiety/depression and extreme fatigue, and I have to go to the doctors enough as it is, and am also taking medication for the depression and also an underactive thyroid, so I don't really want to be taking more tablets - also I am starting to get really self-conscious about going to the doctors, almost feeling like they must be fed up to the back teeth with me, so I am nervous about going back with yet another problem
I know that back in the day (my teens) when I first had the problem, there was really only the anti-fungal cream, which as I said before, seemed to do nothing whatsoever, but now I always see adverts on TV with products that can be bought over the counter and say they clear up the infection completely. What I want to know is which product would you recommend, or would you say it is best to have a doctors appointment?
Also, does having the infection on my toes cause problems for other parts of the body? I am starting to wonder if there is a link with me having the fungal infection on my toes and my tiredness, as I read that yeast infections can cause fatigue.
HIV Prevention :: Blood On Hand And Under Finger Nail
a while ago my friend cut his hand and some of his blood got onto my hand and under my fingernail. I noticed dried blood under my fingernail the next morning.
1. would the virus be dead before it touched my hand ?
2. can the virus get through under the finger nail ?
3. does dry skin and paper cuts allow entry into the bloodstream?
4. is this a no risk situation?
5. no need to test? .
i just need clarification as I'm not 100% sure.
HIV Prevention :: Precum On Fresh Cut Of Nail Scratch
Yesterday I meet a guy...There was lots of precum on his penis...I was down with my face down side and he was on top of me..he did not inserted inside my ***. He was humping his dick between my testicals and thighs...there was lot of precum...after some time precum got dry..and it made me itching...I scratched it..this made small cuts and lil blood...again after 3 min my partner placed his penis at the same place with all precum touching the fresh cut...
1 ) Is there a risk of HIV as fresh precum touched fresh cut.
2) As this dry precum made me itching for 5 hr...are there any chances I have got STD
Nail Disorders :: Melanoma - Black Spot Under Toenail?
I have had a black spot under my toenail for 5 months. I have been on medication for 4 months treating it as fungus but it is only looking worse. It is becoming darker with weird colors in the middle and the skin by the cuticle is getting dark. My toe has not hurt at all until the last couple of weeks, now it aches sometimes. I have an appointment with a podiatrist on Monday but I am curious if anyone else has experienced these symptoms?

If anyone could help answer what this is, it would mean the world. I'm really worried and I'm not sure what it is...if it is cancer, a bruise or a fungal infection, etc.....there are so many possibilities and I'd really love an answer! It doesn't hurt if I press on it, but I am still worried.
BTW I did go on a camp where I hiked for hours and hours and my toes (not just my big toe) hurt when I pressed on them for a couple days after but it went away quickly - this was a few months ago. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with what has happened but yeah...
So - if anyone could give me a name of what I have and how I can treat it, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again!
Hip Replacement :: Type Of Anaesthetic
I sometimes have pain down the whole of my leg, especially the outside below the knee. Is there any way of knowing if this is due to the hip or back, as both are dodgy?
I am due for a hip replacement on 9 June and the bit I have been scared stiff of is getting in the skin to start it. I felt I could only cope with a general anaesthetic but could not persuade him to give me anything other than a local.
Menopause :: Hysteroscopy Without Anaesthetic
Over the past year I've had cervical biopsies, polyps removed and cyst drained - all fine. Due to a bout of severe bleeding after no period for a year I'm going in for a Hysteroscopy - no anaesthetic, possible localized anaesthetic. I'm terrified! I'm wondering if anyone could share tips, experiences, advice of this procedure. I don't have children so I'm worried it could be even more painful. Anxiety levels are through the roof. I should have the date of it sometime in the next few days.
View 13 RepliesKnee :: Manipulation Under Anaesthetic (MUA) After TKR
I'm 12 weeks post TKR and saw my surgeon today. He has suggested (recommended) that I undergo MUA asap as my knee bend isn't what it ought to be. I understand this involves the manual procedure then being put on a machine overnight in hospital then intensive physio. My concern is that of course my surgeon cannot guarantee if it will improve things or to what extent it will if it does. He has also said it will cause pain but can't say how much and how long for. I've done well over the last 12 weeks in other ways. The wound has healed well, I can fully straighten the new knee, I have been driving for six weeks and I can walk for at least an hour with virtually no pain in my new knee. I just wondered if anyone has undergone this MUA procedure and if so, what was it like? I'm in two minds whether I should do it or persevere a little longer with more physio.

I'm having a first colonoscopy soon, and am concerned at the pain aspect, Doctors tell me it is virtually pain free, and I have a history of poor reactions to anaesthetics with previous hospital procedures and Dentists, where they just don't work, anybody else have this problem and how do you overcome it.
I have always told the Doctors who tend to just ignore what I say, I have to assume that any pain relief I get will not work until much later in the day, is this manageable?
How To Apply Anaesthetic Gel Before Vulvar Biopsy?
I have some gel to apply 30 mins before the procedure but you are supposed to cover the area (once the gel has been applied) with a plastic dressing. I don't have such a thing and it will move around anyway .... Would be great to hear from anyone who has any tips! I thought of putting cling film around a normal dressing and holding it there with my pants on?
