Undiagnosed Weight Gain, Acne, Hair Loss, Constipation And Bloating

I'm 19 years old and for about the past 4 years I have been on a roller coaster with my body. When I was 16 I RANDOMLY gained 30 pounds (weighing 135 at that point) in a matter of 6-8 weeks unexplainably. During this time, my hair started falling out, I broke out horribly, I became constipated, and of course depressed. This continued for about a year. I was loosely diagnosed with PCOS by an endocrinologist, but was told by my gyno. shortly after that she was 99.9% sure I did not have it (I did not have any cysts on my ovaries). I was put on birth control and spironolactone (a diuretic that helps with acne and hairloss) and within the span of about a year everything VERY SLOWLY mellowed out. I was told by many doctors that this was probably just puberty and that I was paying attention to what I was eating or that I was stressed, etc. Needless to say, I was working out like crazy and counting EVERY SINGLE MORSEL that touched my lips. The only thing I was stressed about was whatever the **** was going on with my body. I am not very high-strung and I rarely get stressed out. Every doctor acted as if I were making this up or overreacting.

By the end of my senior year, 2 years after all of this nonsense began, it was as if EVERY SINGLE SYMPTOM disappeared. Like night and day. I returned to my normal weight of 105, had NO breakouts, no hair loss, not the slightest bit of constipation or any depression, etc. It was the strangest thing and no one could figure it out. I could eat whatever I wanted and not exercise a bit and I stayed the same weight. No stomach pains or bloating at all. However, in my second semester of college I was thrown another curve ball...it started happening again!! I gained 24 lbs in 5 weeks with no explanation...breakouts began over night, as well as the constipation, etc. About 6 weeks ago I was put on Metformin, but have really had no luck with it. I've lost maybe 3 pounds since being on it...but I've been very active and had no appetite whatsoever, so I'm not sure if it's even helping. 3 lbs means nothing when you can gain it back as easily as I do. I recently have been experiencing slight memory loss and just foggy thoughts I feel like. I can eat 5 crackers, or a salad and feel as if I just ate 10 cheeseburgers and fries. It is crazyyyy. I can find no correlations between lactose, gluten, or any foods to any of this going on.

I have been checked for hypothyroidism, cushing's, vitamin D deficiency, insulin resistance, had ultrasounds done, and numerous other things. All of my levels are not fine, but PERFECT. So once again no one can help me. I have recently read about iodine deficiencies, bacterias/fungus in the stomach, ovarian tumors/cysts, liver dysfunction, and LEAKY GUT! For me, the leaky gut hit the nail on the head as far as ALL of my symptoms go. I'm going to go back to the GI and see if any of these things could be the source of my problem. I just don't understand it coming and going like night and day though. Definitely read up on leaky gut and these other illnesses i've mentioned...they sound a lot like the things y'all have been mentioning, as well.

Thyroid :: Extreme Weight Gain With Hashimoto

I don't really know how to begin this message, I'm so exhausted and mad against that weight gain and stuff.

I am 20 years old and was diagnosed with Hashimoto one year ago. Since then, I put up 20 kilos ( most of them in 6 months ). My t4f and t3f are okay, and THIS is at 0.40, which is the minimum.

There are two years and a half ago, I was 110 kilos. I decided to lose weight and did 2 to 3 hours of sport per day + a diet. I lost 54 kilos and reached 56 kilos for 180. I felt soo good and happy for the first time of my life, no kidding.

And then, I haven't even had the time to have fun with my new body, that I began putting up weight.

I do 10 to 14 hours of sport per week ( I run a lot, quick walks in the mountain and so on ) and still follow my diet ( 1200-1300 cal )
I'm sick, I'm trying not to be too depressed, but it's hard. I'm so tired, my muscles don't want to keep on, and neither want I. Thinking that I've lost one year of my life trying to lose weight for nothing makes me mad.

I'm followed by a diet doctor, who can't even find why I keep on putting weight,m but tries to change some of the aspects of what I eat. I also see a psy, he can't really help me, as my problem is real, and not just in my head.

Thyroid Disorders :: Hashimoto's With Eating Disorder / Weight Gain

I'm trying to recover from an eating disorder with hashimoto's, and I've been gluten and dairy (among other things at times) free for several years to try to manage the hashimoto's. But all these dietary restrictions are making me crazy and make the eating disorder worse. BUT i'm really afraid to eat gluten again because everyone says it will make the hashimoto's worse and/or cause weight gain and i am already weight restored and NOT keen on gaining more. Does anyone here have hashimotos and maintain their ideal weight while eating unrestrictedly? Are my concerns about gluten causing weight gain all in my head?

Thyroid Disorders :: Memory Loss / Distortion

My mother had her thyroid and a benign tumour removed about 6 months ago. She lives 3 hours away from me, so I have seen her a few times but only for short intervals and we regularly speak on the phone. Since her operation I have noticed she is always tired (also due to her heart medication) and that she has become more of a glass half empty type of person. Recently my father had a heart attack (serious but my Dad is a trooper and is now recovering after surgery). I have spent the last week with my mother, and with her thyroid and stress of my father I became her personal punching bag. Her erratic mood swings, outbursts and obsessing over trivial matters are well documented relating to the thyroid in all the googling I have done. What I can't find is any information on her memory loss/memory distortion of the facts. To give 2 examples (of many): 1. My parents had a lawyer at the hospital to update their will, so I went out and sat in the foyer. I was on my phone looking at Facebook to fill in time and one of Mum's friends sat beside me. I put my phone away and chatted to her friend. On the way home Mum had a go a me  because her friend told her that I spent the whole time looking at my phone whilst she was trying to talk to me. 2. After leaving my niece's 21st, my Mum tells me that one of my brothers was very cold to her all night and didn't talk to her. A couple of hours later as everyone is heading off to bed, my mother says "So (my brother) didn't talk to you either" with which I replied "Yes we did, I spent quite a lot of time talking to him". My mother than lost it completely and started yelling that I had told her that my brother didn't speak to me. Though I can't find any information about this type of memory loss, I am hoping someone might be able to give me a heads up. Also if someone has been told by a family member about their erratic emotions I would love to hear your advice on how to bring it up with my mother.

Hair Loss :: Following Depression

I went through about a week and a half of depressions (what I believe was). Lack of appetite, trouble sleeping and crying randomly. Immediately my hair began to shed. I understand that hair usually sheds 2-3 months after a stressful period,(telogen effluvium is what it's called) but mine started right when I became depressed. I don't have bald patches anywhere, it's just all over shedding. It's been going on for about a month now, my hair doesn't really feel thinner yet but I know it will if this continues. I can wear my hair down or else it'll be all over. I wear it in loose buns. Brushing it is emotionally difficult because my hair brush will be full in 2 strokes. I'm 19 and female. I feel like I'm slowly getting uglier and uglier. I'm not depressed anymore, I feel back to myself. But it's still shedding. It makes no sense to me. I eat healthy and exercise. How long should I expect this to occur, since it can't be telogen effluvium? What is happening?

Sertraline :: Weight Loss/ Gain?

I am 32 female and I am suffering depression for a long time on and off. last 2 months due to medical problems my low mood became permanent depression. Today I saw psychiatrist and she suggested taking sertraline 50mg. she said its my choice as she can't force me.

My main worry is Weight, as I have/had eating disorder I control my eating to stay slim. I am not under weight at all. (in fact in last 2 months I put a bit of weight but scared to weight myself)

I am not such a person that depression caused weight loss, or lack of appetite.

I want to know does sertraline cause weight gain or weight loss. She said any time I can stop it and I am due to see her next month. I know it takes 2-6 weeks to see the benefit.

Please give me your experience especially those who are slim before starting the medication. Did you lost weight or gain?

Adderall :: Weight Gain / Loss

I take adderall for adult add i started taking it approx august 2011 while going to school and took it throughout the fall, spring, and also summer 2012 semester. When i first started taking it i noticed a rapid weight loss which is a side effect of the drug and i wanted to lose a few pounds so it was not only helping me concentrate but also helped me lose weight. I do however work out too as i am a very active person, but after taking the medicine for a few months i noticed that i gained all of the weight i lost back if not more and i'm really upset about it. my starting weight was between 150/155 im a 28 year old female im 5'5 with a medium frame. I stopped taking it this past june after my summer class which ended june 28 2012 due to the expensive price of even the generic brand "ampheta" which is what i take, not to mention to see the psychiatrist every few months for medication follow up its around 200$ a visit because my insurance will not cover it so i stopped taking it to save the money until i start classes back up again this august. i was only taking 1 of the 2 doses of the 20 mg a day that are instructed on my script because my classes were so close together. i spoke to my doctor about it and he said 1 pill a day is ok, im pretty sure im on the 20 mg generic adderall xr. here is the question that i have, as i am active i do have a crappy diet which does not help matters, but i am trying to improve my diet. once i start taking the adderall this upcoming august will i have the same side effect of weight loss or does that normally only happen the first time you take it? when i was a kid i took ritalin and when i started adderall in august 2011 my weight dropped to 139.5 which is the lowest i had been since high school. a comfortable weight for me would be between 135 and 145 but i don't want to look sickly thin as i am 5'5, 28 years old 29 in december and medium frame/average build.  will the weight come back off once i start taking the med again? please help! i do exercise and im trying to change my appetite but im so upset that i gained it all back.

Mirtazapine :: Weight Gain / Loss

I started Mirtazapine (Remeron) a couple months ago. I was on Zyprexa before that. I read about weight gain people had on Zyprexa and asked my psychiatrist to look for an alternative. He prescribed me Remeron, and after I asked if there would be any weight gain he said no. I took his word for it, since we have had a really good connection for the past 10 years.

However, I noticed my appetite increased, and kept increasing with each increased dose. I've been trying to lose weight for the past 5/6 months since getting out of treatment. I didn't feel like I needed to look research much of Remeron since my I put my trust in my psychiatrist as I always do. Since feeling like my life was spinning out of control and I wasn't losing weight, I decided to put the matters into my own hands. After seeing a dietician for the past 5/6 months, we had tested and ruled out all possibilities for why I wasn't losing weight. We have been working tirelessly trying to figure out the problem.

So as I did research on my own on the medication, I stumbled upon a LOT of frightening news. People gaining 20-90 pounds on Remeron. This scared me to death. Not only that, put I read about TONS of people having increased, incurable hunger from Remeron. I had to get myself off this stuff!

I hadn't been sleeping that well after the last increase to 45mg at night. What I did notice is that my hunger was out of control and I was eating in the middle of the night and in the morning (which I never did before). I felt like I was gaining weight, and felt out of control from the frequent eating. This was the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I had wanted.

So, my question to you is, did you have crazy hunger while on Remeron, and for those of you who have discounted Remeron, were you able to lose the weight? Also, how long did it take, and when did you hunger begin to decrease after you stopped Remeron?

Hair Loss / Shedding Due To Depression

A few weeks ago I suffered from a bout of depression. During that time, I had trouble sleeping, lack of appetite and would cry randomly. It only lasted about a week max, but my hair immediately started shedding almost at the beginning of it. I'm now back to feeling like my happy self but my hair is continuing to shed excessively. There's no bald spots or patches, just all over shedding. At least 10 or more hairs come out after I brush it. I'm taking multivitamins everyday and keeping healthy now, I'm just wondering when it's going to stop because it is really annoying me. I can't wear my hair down. I'm also 19, female. Thanks

Thyroid Disorders :: Hair Loss With Levothyroxine

Hi everyone! I am totally new to this group and excited to get input from everyone! I'll try and give you a quick synopsis of the past year and a half for me when I gave birth to my first child....

Initially I felt fine, until about 4 months after I gave birth.  I had initially lost all the baby weight and then I started gaining again, had major brain fog, dry skin, cold, crazy water retention and bloated face, unmotivated, etc.  all the usual symptoms.  In February I was diagnosed with Hashimotos by my regular doctor and here are my levothyroxine dosages and blood results since...

Feb 2015    Tsh 269.    T4. <0.11.  T3. <20.      (No meds yet...initial blood work)
Apr 2015.    Tsh 156.    T4.   0.45.  T3.  42.       (25 mcg)
May 2015.   Tsh 6.69.   T4.  1.83.   T3.  96.       (75 mcg)
Sept 2015.   Tsh 2.89.   T4.  1.59.                      (100 mcg)
Oct 2015.     Tsh 8.61.                                         (75 mcg)
Nov 2015.    Tsh 1.21.                                         (100 mcg)
Feb 2016.     Tsh 2.36.                                         (100 mcg)

So my original Doctor began my levothyroxine regimen at 25 mcg for 6 weeks. I immediately felt much better even though my numbers were still going crazy.  He upped my dosage twice then sent me to an endocrinologist.  Both agreed that my numbers were so bad it could not be postpartum hypothyroidism and I had probably had this for a long time undiagnosed and the pregnancy made it officially just turn off.  In October we lowered the dosage to double check this theory and I felt terrible and my numbers changed right away so my endo put my meds right back up.

Now, hair loss was actually never one of my initial symptoms and I am convinced that it began when i started my medication, but both doctors insist that it's my body getting used to the meds and my levels getting better and better. My endo thought perhaps it's was especially bad because I was also experiencing postpartum hair loss.  But at this point it is now a full year since I have been diagnosed and on medication.  Coupled with the hair loss I also started getting serious joint pain, but again my endo said I was adjusting and this was a common symptom of hypothyroidism.

So basically, I am wondering how after a year of medication I would still be experiencing symptoms with levels that are now perfectly fine? Unless it was related to the medication??....I feel very guilty bringing it up all the time to my doctor because I know I should be glad that the huge issues of brain fog, concentration and mood are generally good (I still say I am not exactly myself yet).  I feel silly bringing up something cosmetic but it is so depressing to look in the mirror.  I hate doing my hair, washing it, sometimes just running my fingers through my hair I get five more.  Even though now I can say it's less, it's definitely still happening and I don't see any new growth.  But, on the flip side, hair loss is associated with adjusting to armour and I am terrified to lose any more.

Thyroid Disorders :: Hair Loss With Ferritin

I am hypothyroid/hashimotos.  I have been experiencing significant hair loss for over a year. I'm young and female so having sparse hair is NOT ok.  I've read one needs to have their ferritin at 70 or 80 to experience hair regrowth.  When I first met with my naturopath and got diagnosed this year I was put on 25mcg of Levothyroxine and I told her my main concern was my hair loss. My ferritn was at 32.  I was put on a daily elemental iron supplement.

A blood test a month later and I was already at 54! Two months after that i was at 68.3!  I was getting close to my goal but at that test she didn't like how my iron and iron saturation went too high/out of range.  So she told me to only take my iron pill ever OTHER day and lo and behold two months later my ferritin was down to 45.1.  Super frustrating. I am trying to bring my iron UP! So how does this work? How can my iron and iron saturation be so high and my ferritin so low? Is it actually dangerous for me to take the pill daily if my iron saturation and iron are above the limit? I'm not going to be able to fix my hair loss and bring my ferritin up if I am only taking it every other day! HELP!

Mirtazapine :: Weight Gain And Loss - My Experience

this is my personal experience of weight gain and loss with mirtazapine.

i was taking mirtazapine for a total of 8 months, in the first 2 months i didn't gain any weight at all and thought i had got away with that particular side effect, but no, in the last 6 months of taking it i put on a total of 21lb. as it turned out the symptoms i had weren't down to my anxiety so  decided to taper off the mirtazapine. i have been off it now for 2 months.i had slight withdrawal symptoms but nothing major and i'm now completely clear of the drug. so far in the last 2 months i have lost 7lb of the 21lb i put on. this has been done through diet though, people have said that the weight just drops off when you stop taking mirtazapine but i haven't found that, i have had to work at it. but i don't mind that. 7lb loss is still half a stone of the weight i gained gone, i will keep going till the other 14lb (1 stone) has gone too no matter how it takes. and if i ever need medication again for my anxiety it will NOT be mirtazapine.

Beta-blockers :: Weight Gain/loss On Atenolol Dosage

I was taking 100mg for 3 years and had tremendous weight gain and began getting numb toes and fingers. My GP reduced the dose to 50 mg and within the first month I lost a whole kilo and my bp dropped. Now trying to stop smoking too and with Zyban, and sleeping tabs I am getting night sweats and feel generally wiped out, so with gp's consent we are dropping the Atenolol totally and see what happens. Good luck to all out there who have found problems and I hope you find suitable solutions without the side effects.

Hair Loss :: 38 Female Eyebrow Loss In Patches

For the past year, I've been losing my eyebrows in patches.  Patches will grow back, but then fall out weeks/moths later.  I'm a 38-year-old female, healthy and fit.  Recent blood work all normal. Thyroids normal.  I'm not losing hair anywhere else, and my skin has no redness or dryness.  It is just my eyebrows that keep falling out.  The only thing I could think of was my birth control--I was on the Mirena IUD.  But I removed it and ceased all birth control several months ago and the problem persists.  All doctors I've visited have been stumped, thus my online question.
