Viral Infections :: On And Off Fever With Sore Throat
I have seasonal allergies, although, this may not be that case, because this year I have not had allergies.
I have had a BAD sore throat, and it really tends to hurt when I swallow. I've taken cough drops, honey, salt water rinses, tylenol and ibuprofen, and even gargled my prescription Lidocaine for numbing, and none of its working. I can't post a picture because I don't know how right now, but my throat is red, but no pus spots, no swollen tonsils, or anything else seems wrong. My sore throat has been accompanied by a fever that comes and goes, and a headache that lasts and day and goes, then comes back, and goes again. Is there anything I can take for what is going on, and can you tell me what I might have?
Allergies :: Sore Throat With Fever And Chills
Male, 37, I have a frequent sore throat. Sore throat with feverish feeling / fever and chills, excess mucus and blocked nose. In addition gas, acidity with fatigue and weakness. This is going on for the last 14/15 years. It is decreasing the quality of my life.
In my childhood I have suffered with frequent tonsil infection or tonsillitis.
Is there any permanent cure ?
Is there any test to detect properly that which bacteria or virus is the culprit ?
Chickenpox? Fever, Sore Throat And Gums
So it started last weekend. Saturday - I was TIRED.. so very tired, but my mates kept insisting I come out so I did... drank lots, kind of overcame the tiredness. Next day Sunday - , I noticed one spot on my waist. Thought nothing of it until that night I was running a temperature (38.5)...
Monday morning, woke up with about 10 spots in total, on the neck, chest, arms. Suspecting chicken pox I took myself to the GP who said it was likely chickenpox, but hard to tell so soon... well 5 days later, I know for sure its the pox!
I've had a sore throat since Wednesday, and while I did not experience fever on Tues or Wed, ran a temperature again on Thurs night and this morning at 38.8. I've headaches, sore gums, diarrhea, blocked ears and insomnia... it is absolutely VILE.
Given the repeated fevers, I got a doctor to call in today. He checked my ears and said he suspected some kind of secondary infection and gave me antibiotics. He said not to worry too much about the fever, as it is to be expected after all.
Pregnancy :: Terrible Sore Throat And Low Grade Fever

View 1 RepliesHIV Prevention :: Persistent Sore Throat, Not Strep, No Fever Or Rash?
Almost exactly 30 days ago I had unprotected insertive vaginal sex with a woman I might categorize as low risk. Until this encounter I have only been with my wife (high school sweethearts). The woman in question is from northern Minnesota, white, in her 40s. I'm also in my 40s, white, also from rural Minnesota. For the past three weeks I've had sore throat, slightly swollen lymph nodes on my neck. No fever, no rash. Checked for strep, came back negative. I've confessed to my wife who appears willing to stay with me. I'm scheduled for HIV testing next week (4th generation). I have an appointment with ENT, but not for another month. In the meantime my anxiety level is quite high....I don't necessarily feel fatigued, or flu like. But the last couple of days my appetite has disappeared, which may be due to the anxiety. I am worried because the sore throat and slightly swollen lymph nodes have lasted this long without knowing the cause....Can't be cold, shouldn't last this long. Allergies? I take Zyrtec every day and seem pretty clear. Not much sinus congestion at all. Tonsillitis? One does appear a bit enlarged. All of a sudden? Seems coincidental. Near panic as I wait for my test....any possible reassurance to help get me through this weekend? Mono perhaps?

View 3 RepliesInfectious Mononucleosis :: Recurring Glandular Fever
Living with Recurring Glandular Fever
Many people who catch glandular fever (Epstein-Barr virus) recover completely, but for a significant minority, like me, the virus hides from the immune system. I believe that this ability was discovered in the late 1960s. I heard of it in a BBC science programme in the early 70s, and immediately recognised my situation.
I caught glandular fever (without complications) in spring 1967 when I was a youth. Those who are affected by recurring symptoms, will recognise my case, where the symptoms receded imperceptibly slowly. It took about 9 months from being infected before I felt more or less normal again - for a while.
I pass on my experience of coping with this condition. There is bad news and good news.
The bad news is that the symptoms recur throughout life - that is for those who have difficulty clearing the original infection. A cure might emerge, but I am assuming that this will not happen. The good news is that, in time, the symptoms become gradually less of a problem.
The bad news is that one needs to adapt one's lifestyle in order to deal with this. The good news is that one can live a normal life. There are many with other lifelong conditions, who are far worse off.
Any virus illness (cold, 'flu) will trigger the symptoms. Something as common as catching a cold runs as follows. One feels unwell (exhausted), with no symptoms. About 2 days later, the cold symptoms start, accompanied with swelling of the glands in the throat and/or cheeks. The swelling is not very noticeable to others. One has a slightly raised temperature, and feels quite ill. After 4 to 10 days, the cold symptoms and swelling subside, but the feeling of exhaustion remains. This can last 4 to 6 weeks, or 6 months after a bout of 'flu.
How can you cope? There are a number of measures.
1) Smoking exacerbates the symptoms. If you are a smoker, you will be one of those who find stopping smoking relatively easy. You will soon learn to avoid smoke-filled places.
2) Should the symptoms start, treat as for a cold, or 'flu. You will feel exhausted, and a good thing to do is to get a lot of sleep.
3) It is worth getting a 'flu vaccination, if you can.
4) Exercise - you won't feel like exercise, and it is wise to rest while the cold symptoms are there. Once they are gone, and the feeling of exhaustion remains, that is the time to resume vigorous exercise. I think it might be the raised body temperature which helps to fight off the symptoms. In the case where you go to the gym, you will have to force yourself against the feeling of exhaustion for the first time, and even the second time, but by the third time, you realise that you are much fitter. The exhaustion will go. Regular exercise helps ward off the problems, and the fitter you are, the better you will manage.
5) Avoid catching colds. You will find that you have become especially susceptible to colds. There are many things involved here, from a good, varied diet, a daily multivitamin/mineral tablet (don't overdose), cough sweets in the bus/train etc.
The best advice, and perhaps the most difficult and lifestyle threatening, is to follow what (great) grandmother told you, "Wrap up warm!" Think how she would say, "Put on your sweater/scarf/hat/woolly socks before you go out!" You think. "It is not cold outside". You know it isn't "Cool", and you don't want your friends to laugh at you.
If the summer weather is really hot, you can get away with fashionable wear. Otherwise, the bad news is that keeping warm maybe "uncool" but if you ignore this, you will suffer. Ideally, you should keep on the verge of perspiring, and if the surrounding air is fresh and cool, that is the ideal. Avoid stuffy environments. Avoid becoming too hot, sweaty and wet, and then getting chilled. However, if you can arrange to change into dry clothes and not become chilled (as when you go to the gym), all well and good!
I found these lifestyle adaptations very unwelcome. You will have to find your own way to cope. Thinking of these matters will help, and you can lead a normal life, with bouts of extreme exhaustion from time to time. Take comfort in that these will become less severe, and maybe less frequent as the years pass. Otherwise, you are quite normal. You can achieve what you are capable of intellectually, and physically. Face up to the occasional difficulties, and be determined to succeed with your life. Epstein-Barr will not prevent you.
HIV Exposure A Week Ago :: Tender Lymph Nodes, Fever And Sore Throat
Exactly one week and 1 day ago I received unprotected oral sex from a sex worker in South Africa (known for HIV). It lasted for about 30 minutes. I know I made a major mistake. Statistically she had HIV as 70% of sex workers are positive. She had false teeth in her mouth and removed it for the purposes of the ******* which means she definitely had blood in her mouth and there was deep throating involved. I am more than certain I got the virus and don't know how to deal with it. I know many people experience phantom pains but I definitely have tender lymph nodes in my face and neck, fever, sore throat, all the typical signs I contracted the virus. I took a test 2 days after and of course it was negative due to the window period and no prior sexual experience (NONE). I am considering taking my own life due to this issue. I come from a VERY conservative family and they would never be able to deal with this. What should I do?

View 2 RepliesSore Throat :: Swollen Tonsils, Lump In Throat, Clear Mucus, Sore, Headache
My tonsils have been swollen for over a month, until last week they were painless, but now I have flu symptoms. Its quite scary, it affects my swallowing and I have a very very dry mouth, even when I drink loads of water all day. Hasn't affected my breathing as of yet, but feels like a lump in my throat is blocking it off.
This has been going for three days now.
Doctor said I need a blood test for glandular fever, which is next week.
I mentioned that I think I can feel my epiglottis swollen, and she laughed and said that is all the way down by my adam's apple and would have a job feeling that... even though i've seen many cases online where it's visible above the tongue and often can be felt.
Sore Throat :: Sore Throat, Overall Ill Feeling No Diagnosis
sore throat, fatigue, pain, no diagnosis Posted 10 minutes ago I'm sorry for the long post but I really need some help. I am 25 years old, female from Bulgaria. Everything started after 2 shots of progesterone done by my gyno. I had high prolactin levels and somewhat low progesterone and my period stopped so that is why she gave me shots. After the second shot I woke up with very bad pain and burning sensations in my sinuses,my whole body was in pain. And there it all begins. For 2 weeks I wasn't getting better, I had a fever (not very high),sinus pain and sore throat. Finally I visited a ENT doctor, she said that there was nothing wrong with me,everything-ears,nose throat looked fine but I asked for a sinus x-ray-it was also fine. Then my gyno advised me to culture my throat and nose. The results were staphylococcus aureus in nose and Moraxella catarrhalis in throat. I was prescribed cefpodoxime (due to antibiogram) took it for several days and I wasn't feeling any better, then my dr switched me to Cefuroxime,it did help at the beginning,I was feeling better but by the time I was taking my last pill all the symptoms returned. My sinuses didn't hurt anymore but my throat was on fire, muscle and joint pain, feverish feeling but no actual fever this time. So I was put on unasyn (Sultamicillin) on IV drip.I was getting no relief and was just feeling very sick from that med,so we stopped it. The I went to another ENT doctor and he told me there was nothing wrong with me, my throat looked fine and I had a little wound in my nose with blood. I had no runny nose. So I did a culture of my throat again and it happened to be Candida Glabrata ( may be because of all those antibiotics) I also had e.coli in my urine.I took one dose of Fosfomycin for my e.coli and it cleared up and I was put on IV drip again with fluconazole for my candida.I also had candida in my vaginal results. I started to get better on fluconazole but again it lasted 3 days and in the end of the treatment I was ill again. My ears started to hurt very badly, all other symptoms continued.I waited 2 weeks after the last antibiotic and did a nose and throat culture again in two different labs and there was no infection found, I also did a vaginal and urine tests again and the urine was fine, had some enterococcus faecalis but in small amounts from my vag microbiology. My gyno said that it is better to not treat it for now because of all the meds I took for those 2 months. Yes,it's been two months and I am only getting worse, my whole body is in pain,I am very fatigued, have the flu feeling sore throat, ear pain, lymph and joint pain,I feel very very ill. And the tests say nothing. On my blood test the only thing that was abnormal was my AST (antistreptolysin-titer) levels were high 310 (from 200 being the norm).Went to a 3rd ENT,he also said everything looked fine, my ears and throat are not inflamed and he said that it wasn't my ears that hurt but my face joints. So I am here, desperate for ome help, not getting better, not knowing what to do now.I started having very bad panic attacks because I think I am dying and no one can find what is that illness. Can it be some autoimmune response to the progesterone shots? I don't know anymore. It's a struggle to get out of bed really.

View 8 RepliesEar, Nose And Throat :: Cough And Taste Of Blood At Back Of Throat
Before I rush to a doctor and look like a hypochondriac I thought I'd shoot a question here:
I woke up this morning and I have been coughing/gagging all morning and can taste blood in the back of my throat, I have not coughed up any blood though.
I have been trying to quit smoking since 2011 and have been a smoker since 1991.
I am also on SR Hydromorphone (Jurnista) for severe chronic back pain.
I am also on 800 Mg Carbamazepine (as a Mood stabilizer NOT for Epilepsy)
As well as Mirtazapine (for chronic Clinical Depression)
And Atenolol for mild Hypertension.
Anyhoo, as of this morning I have been hacking up a storm, as of 2 hours from waking up I developed a sore throat (I believe from the hard coughing) I have not coughed anything up but the coughing gets so hard it becomes dry-reaching frequently.
And that taste of blood waay down in the back of my throat is ever present after each cough.
As I have depression and mood disorder, I don't want to go straight to the doc as quite often individuals with mental health issues don't get taken seriously here in Australia, quite often I would get told "Go to your psychiatrist" as if I am crazy. and in the past I ended up in trouble with serious health issues that went undiagnosed simply because some peanut G.P. thought it was all in my head, until I ended up in hospital sometimes in quite serious condition.
So I was wondering if someone who understands this coughing issue could be could shoot me an answer first.
I am meant to go to University tomorrow (I am studying for a Psychology Degree) and I want to be at my peak for study if at all possible.

I am a female 62 years of age who has suffered with FMF since I was a child of 8 years old - but not diagnosed until I was 45 years old. The FMF attacks mimicked several different medical conditions - first I had my appendix taken out at age 8 because of abdominal pains, then at 32 I had a hysterectomy because my "attacks" happened during my monthly menstrual cycle, then the attacks continued and mimicked gall bladder attacks - so I had my gallbladder out! At the age of 45 I was diagnosed with FMF when I made a trip to Israel and visited specialists in this area of expertise to finally get a diagnosis. It was a long time to finally get a medical diagnosis as most of my adult life I was told by doctors that it was stress related and that I should learn how to control the stress in my life!
I was hospitalized each and every month for at least 4 days because of the severity of the attacks and the dehydration of vomiting. Colchicine has kept it a manageable level for me and kept me out of hospital. After 17 years I am now getting side effects of Colchicine of numbness in my hands and feet. Now I have to find another drug that I can use in order to keep the FMF under control.

I don't want to eat as it feels like my food is stuck or talk because it's so sore but when I wake up it's ok? I went to doctors Last week they reduced my beta blockers because I was so zapped out. I mentioned my throat but he wasn't concerned and barely looked. He seemed miffed that the specialist mentioned I need to be careful about sore throats due to thyroid med and white blood cells. He was annoyed about having a blood test. Dr hasn't rung back so I guess that's ok but is my throat normal problem for overactive thyroid.
