Barrett's Oesophagus :: Do's And Don'ts ?

This is my first posting to the Barrett's Oesophagus group, having just been diagnosed with Barretts and a Hiatus Hernia on my Birthday (what a birthday present). I am amazed at how quickly the symptoms have arisen. Suddenly I can eat very little (both in quantity and variety) and trying to find my way around what I should eat, drink etc. I feel left in limbo by my consultant and GP, who just said I would have an endoscopy every 2 years, and that I needed to manage it well or it could lead to cancer, a bit worrying when they are not advising me what I should do!

Barrett's Oesophagus Has Increased?

A recent study showed 20 years on most patients' Barrett's segment lengths remained the same as at initial diagnosis.

Thus it was with some confidence I approached my surveillance gastroscopy yesterday that my 3 cm circumferential band of non-dysplastic Barrett's would show no changes.

Awake throughout the rather longer than usual procedure (unfortunately sedation has no effect on me), I listened to the doctor call out the distances to her recording nurse as she took 20 biopsies and realised this was longer than 3 cm.

"8 centimeters", she confirmed when I asked her afterwards. ""Full circumference lower down and patchy higher up."

I was astounded. With my Nissen fundoplication years ago and the Collis-Nissen revision last year reducing reflux, I hadn't expected that.

It took my wife to unravel the blindingly obvious.

"Doesn't the Collis procedure lengthen your oesophagus?"

"Yes."

"And what constitutes that increased length?"

Of course. The extended oesophagus is lined with gastric cells. And the length of that extension? - About 5 cm.

The biopsies for the bottom 5 cm will show gastric cells which, depending on histopathology, may be interpreted as gastric metaplasia but not intestinal metaplasia.

I feel sure my previous 3 cm of non-dysplastic Barrett's remains unchanged but has 5 cm of stomach cells lining the extended oesophagus below.

Barrett's Oesophagus :: Pain Ever Since After Endoscopy

I had an endoscopy in February to assess why I had a lump sensation in the throat and some stomach pain. Prior to the procedure I had no chest pain whatsoever.

After the endoscopy, I was diagnosed with silent reflux and Barrett's Oesophagus and have had chest pain ever since.

I told the consultant about this a few days ago and he wants to perform another endoscopy to find out why I have had chest pain since the initial procedure. I'm a bit hesitant as I'm not 100% sure that he didn't cause the problem in the first place. Would anyone else go ahead or get another consultant to have a look?

However being very curious I've obviously read his findings in the pack he sent away with me, the bit I need help understanding is in the diagnosis it states Barrett's oesophagus fold starts at 36 cm c5m3.

Reflux Oesophagitis :: Thickening Of Lower End Of Oesophagus

I have had problems with severe pain on eating and drinking for the past 7 months and have had treatment for gastritis and 2 weeks ago I had my gallbladder removed. After the operation I developed serious acid reflux which progressively got worse and alongside the difficulties eating and drinking landed me in hospital a week ago. Today I had a ct scan which revealed a thickening of the lower end of my oesophagus. I am in pain now day and night and pain killers not that effective. Pain radiates through from front to back between shoulder blades and keeps me awake at night. I now need an endoscopy to determine what the thickening is and I am really worried that it is something sinister. CT scan sword everything else to be normal. I'm on 80mg Omeprazole a day in two doses and 600 mg of Ranitidine and I feel terrible with the side effects. The acid reflux settled to some extent in about 3 days but the pain is no better and I'm losing weight because I can't eat. As I'm in hospital the endoscopy will probably take place over the next couple of days but I'm worried sick as to what they will find. Does anyone know what thickening of the oesophagus means in association with my other symptoms.

GERD (acid Reflux) :: Constant Belching And Tight Oesophagus

I was wondering if anyone can confirm these symptoms...I'm currently seeing doctors about my GERD issues, but I kind of feel like I'm alone in all this.

My issues:
1. Belching
2. Flatulence
3. Regurgitation
4. Tight feeling in throat and oesophagus
5. Stomach cramps
6. Small hiatal hernia

Basically, for the last couple of weeks I've felt really horrible. I get these bloating pains and some days I'm constantly belching. Along with the belching, my oesophagus feels tighter. Having a lot of flatulence as well.

The thing about the belching, it doesn't feel like normal belching. When I belch, I feel this ripple like sensation through my oesophagus. I'm currently on my first week of Dexilant and have quit smoking as of last week. I avoid all standard GERD triggers, and I'm just hoping this gets better soon. This really doesn't feel like living!

Does anyone else get the belching I mentioned above? I find it hard to believe it's my diet, I barely ate today and I've been getting these painful burps all day!

Acid Reflux :: Oesophagus Hiatus Hernia Throat Lumps

About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and they said they could see barrett's oesophagus, however the biopsies came back negative. From then I was told I can never get barratts so don't need to go back and was given 40mg Nexium to take daily.

Since then it has helped a lot but I still get some very bad days of acid reflux, these have been getting worse so I have asked my doctor for another gastroscopy as I have worries about my stomach and chest.

For the last 6 months while I have been waiting for the appointment I have had a strange feeling in my throat, like there is something stuck in there, about an hour after eating lasting hours, it feels really uncomfortable. I have no problem swallowing or eating, it is just there afterwards, like a very large golf ball stuck there. I have also found some pink/red lumps, like flesh on my pharynx. They look sore but I don't have a sore throat, cough or any cold flu symptoms. Like everyone, googling it has produced the worst possible answer of cancer with diagrams similar to my throat.

I went to the doctors last week and explained my concerns and he felt the outside of my throat, said he couldn't feel anything and looked in my throat for literally 1 second, he didn't have a look around just glanced. He just said your fine and then he then told me to stop worrying about stuff because people my age don't get cancer or major diseases, it probably just reflux from the hernia.

It is hard not to worry, when I still don't know what this imaginary lump and the lumps on my throat are.

When I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia the consultant said it is the worst most inflamed hernia and oesophagus she had seen in 15 years as a consultant and I was only 20 at the time, she was in shock, yet I have never had a follow up appointment, my doctor has always said I will be fine so don't need one.

I am a 30 year old man who doesn't smoke and drinks about once a month.

Diagnosed With Gallbladder Rocks

I was diagnosed with gallbladder rocks last year. I am 20 years and haven't removed it yet because I wanted to get some feedback from people close to my age, what was the best approach? did it affect you alot? it would be very helpful if a few people who have had similar problems could comment and tell me about their story in order to get to a more educated decision. I have had plenty of medical feedback but I'd love to hear it from those who had to go through it.
