Hemifacial Spasm :: After Stent Implant - Face Twitch, Droopy And Painful
A little over twelve years , directly after I had a stent implant in one of the main arteries to my heart, the left side of my face developed a twitch. I mentioned the twitch to my cardiologist, and he said, "We all get little twitches. it will go away. It didn't. It progressively became worse and effected my trigeminal nerve. The first neurologist that I was referred to recommended botox. All that I got out of that was the left side of my face being, numb, droopy, twitchy and painful. I went to several doctors and dentists in Spokane. The dentists told me that my teeth were not causing the pain and the neurologists kept prescribing me the same prescriptions. I also tried physical therapy and acupuncture. I had two teeth extracted with the hope that it would relieve the pain. I decided to get proactive and read about microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery. I found that they performed MVD in Seattle at the University of Washington. I e-mailed a detailed description of my symptoms, and they made an appointment to see me. The surgeon (Dr. Rostomily) that I met with asked me, "How long I have you lived with that condition." I told him, "A little over seven years," he said, "I don't know how you have done it." Fourteen days later I had the surgery and when I woke up I was free of the twitch. That was in 2010. I still have the nerve pain on the left side of my face. I am positive that if the neurologists in Spokane had referred me to the U of W Medical Center once that I was diagnosed, that I would also be free of the pain. Last week I started seeing a Physical Therapist (PT) and after the session there was improvement. Hopefully the sessions with the PT will eventually lead to a pain free life. My advice: If you develop HFS and it gets worse, don't delay ... get MVD surgery.

Hemifacial Spasm :: Daily Fluttering In My Left Eye
I have just been diagnosed with Hemifacial Spasms at the age of 46 - since suffering from daily fluttering in my left eye. Thankfully at this stage it is still only affecting the left eye (I have had this since May last year) and hasn't spread anywhere else. I am beside myself with panic that I am going to end up abnormally deformed and disfigured very soon as it does start to include the rest of the face. Can anyone give a complete novice regarding HFS some advice. I only got the letter yesterday and don't see my Consultant until April and I am out of my mind at the outlook prognosis and what to expect. Is it really going to leave me looking disfigured permanently?

View 1 RepliesParkinson Onset? Twitch Between Thumb And Index Finger
I am 35 and I am experiencing a constant twitch between my left thumb and index finger. I thought maybe I had done something to pinch a nerve but it's been going on for a month now. It's driving me crazy. It's like my thumb is getting this signal to clench and it happens constantly when I am not using my thumb. It's completely involuntary.
Could this be caused by some sort of nerve damage, or is this a sign of something more serious like early onset Parkinson's disease?

View 16 RepliesRecovery After Aortic Aneurysm Operation
My fiance, had a check up at the doctors to see if he had an enlarged aneurysm, he had, unbeknown to him, no pain no symptoms of any kind, a very fit and active man at the age of 65. December 12th diagnosed, operated on 1st February 2007. It was as you can imagine a big shock to the both of us obviously him more than me. He was advised to stop smoking which he did the day before the op was given cholesterol lowering tablets and told to exercise, walking up and down stairs, up and down the garden just as much as he could manage. We did not have a computer when he had his op so the only information we had was from the hospital which was reasonably informative but it did not say how /what problems would occur after the op! The surgeon explained it would take between 3 and 6 months for him to start feeling better. Well we are now 7 months down the line and he still gets tired and twinges as he puts it in his abdomen, the doctors say its due to the nerve endings repairing themselves. I personally would advise any wife or girlfriend with a man over toe age of 60 to get a scan, plus we were told it can be genetic so if he has brothers get them to check as well. It has been a ver traumatic time for us both, he is now on the road to full recovery and I'm glad to have him back.

View 9 RepliesCardiovascular :: Enlarged Heart - Operation To Repair
I have a relative who has been diagnosed with an enlarged heart. My father died of an enlarged heart 25 years ago. so its in the family.
I am an engineer so I can understand a simple explanation that if your heart gets bigger but the muscle doesn't get stronger then the pressure it can pump falls away and you have a problem of insufficient blood flow and low blood pressure. Drugs that make the heart work harder are only going to wear the muscles out faster unless you can make them grow so they are again in the right proportion to the heart size.
One drastic solution I heard of is that instead of making the muscles grow or just work harder we make the pump back to its old efficiency. Heart too Big? Then just make it smaller. The idea is that the surgeon just cuts a wedge out of the muscle and sews the remaining heart back together. It all then heals and you have as good as new, I can't imagine what you do while it heals but I am only an engineer and I expect the heart experts to have such issues covered. After all swapping a heart out is now routine.
Hemorrhoids :: THD (HALO) Operation For Grade 5 Piles
I had op 17 days ago and feel today like I can finally see the light! After suffering the agony, bleeding (continually wearing san towels) and life changing effects they bring you i finally decided to have the op. I have had a terrible 17 days 2 visits to docs and 2 to hospital. part of the prob was caused by managing pain relief, allergic to anti-inflammatories, Tramadol gave me a panic attack and made me vomit, been on 60mg codeine 4 X per day and have been more or less sleeping in the bath. Saw surgeon day 15 who told me the op had worked and delay in recovery was because i couldn't take anti-inflam. He offered me morphine for the terrible pain which I declined. Had 6 hours sleep longest since op (only been cat napping due to pain) so cut down on codeine all positive today. Then I went the loo and felt a lump come out like my old piles (only 1 use to have quite a few), now stressing that I have had a prolapse. The surgeon warned me I would have flaps of skin left but this feels more hard and shiny sorry to be graphic!! Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and whether it would go down again, I have never been able to push them up as some people mention.
