Addiction :: Best Way To Get Off Methadone ?
Have been taking methadone for a few years now and got all the way down from 40 mgs to 10mgs a day. I can't seem to get much further down. Does anyone know the best way to just stop taking this med all together?

I'm 25 years old my dad is 50 and has been on a methadone maintenance program for the past 8 years before that he was a heroin addict for about 12-15 years the past year me and my family have been trying to convince my father to kick the methadone he always says how its a deadly withdraw and when he does taper down he always goes back up sometime higher than he was before which really makes me think he just like the way it makes him feel (gets him high for free) recently my mother has went with him to his program and talked with counselors about him getting off my father has hepatitis and he was always a thin man ever since the methadone his stomach has gotta very large i feel the methadone is killing my father.

View 2 RepliesSubstance Abuse :: Methadone Addiction - Prescribed For Someone Else
My boyfriend of 9 months who is an accident victim was prescribed Methadone and Opana just got out of rehab himself, but around Thanksgiving, I broke my finger and he was giving me his doses of Methadone... It's now June and I'm still on it. Only him and I know I'm on it, I refuse to tell my doctors or anyone because I'm also a Celiac and Fibromyalgia patient and I don't want to ruin my chances for getting help. I am down to taking a quarter of a tablet a day. I never really took that much to begin with. Most I took was 2 tablets a day so I wouldn't say I have it as bad as anyone else at all. I need to ween down by myself. I flushed all of his medications but I kept only three tablets that gives me 12 quarter pills to wean. I took a quarter this morning, what do you all suggest I should do with the other 11? You thing I should go with another quarter tomorrow and then cut the quarters in half by taking one of those slivers in the morning and a sliver at night? And then narrowing it down to just a sliver and then jump off? What are some supplements that have helped you? I'm allergic to anxiety medications so that's been my downfall. I am so ashamed of myself and guilty. This isn't like me at all since everyone in my family has some sort of addiction.
View 1 RepliesNicotine Addiction :: Feeling Ill After Quitting Smoking!
I quit smoking exactly 1 week ago today (though it feels much longer) after smoking for almost 7 years.
For the past month and a half, I have had shortness of breath, which came on suddenly. I went to Urgent Care for it, and the doctor, after listening to me breath/listening to my heart, said "everything sounds good", and she said my shortness of breath is due to the fact that I have severe anxiety/panic disorder and a sinus infection. That was in the beginning of February... A couple weeks ago, my best friend's mom (who has been an ER nurse for over 20 years) listened to me breath, took my pulse/blood pressure, and she, too, said my lungs sounded "perfect", and my other vitals were good as well.
However... here I am, late March, and I still experience shortness of breath (though it has gotten somewhat better).
Like I said, it's only been a week since I quit smoking (which I did BECAUSE I felt it might be why I was having shortness of breath), and the first couple of days? I felt great!
Now, I feel awful. I feel like I am dying. My depression has gotten much worse, my anxiety is acting up, I feel "empty" both mentally and emotionally... I have HA (health anxiety) and I fear I might have cancer, or COPD, or some such thing.
Also, physically I just feel completely drained. I feel weak all the time, exhausted, sluggish, my heartbeat feels weak (to me), etc... I have difficulty thinking clearly, my concentration is horrible...
But mainly what bothers me is how weak I feel... Sometimes I feel so weak that I am SURE I am dying. I lay there and think, "this is it, I am dying". It's absolutely terrifying!
I use a nicotine patch, and it DOES seem to help when I have it on, but it only helps so much...
Is this all normal? Before I quit this past week, I had been quitting on and off for a couple months, but my "quitting" would only last 2-3 days. This is the longest I have quit smoking.
I just feel something must be terribly wrong with me... Could this all be just because I quit smoking? No one ever tells you what to REALLY expect when you quit...
Substance Abuse :: Massive Xanax And Methadone Addiction
I'm dealing with a long life of addition I've been on 240mg of methadone for 8 years and probably have been taking Xanax for about 3 years steadily getting to higher dose ages . Is there anything worth trying short of quitting my job and going into a medically detox and probably a long term rehab.

The last time I smoked marijuana was around the 13th of January, but I still have the feeling of laziness and like I'm almost looking through some kind of film or something. Like I feel when I'm high. Is this normal this long after quitting? Or is this "hazy" feeling potentially due to a medical cause. My sight isn't really impaired, but my sight is like I'm high still, like I'm looking through a haze.
I smoked multiple times a day for about a year and a half. It doesn't go away, and it hasn't gotten any better over the time since I've quit.
Cannabis Addiction :: Insomnia After Quitting (non-heavy Smoker)
For the past 3-4 months, I have smoked pot ONCE (depending on mood 1-3 joints) every night to help me go to sleep faster. I've never had insomnia problems or addiction problems before these few months (smoked 2-3 times a week for 6 months prior; and once or twice a month for 5 years before that). Now I find it extremely difficult to go to sleep. My body feels warm everywhere and even if I manage to fall asleep eventually, I never managed to fall into deep sleep and normally wake up within 4 hours feeling unrested. Any advice or similar experiences?

View 4 RepliesPregnancy :: Methadone And Xanax
First let me say that methadone and xanax are 2 completely different medications used for 2 totally different things. If a person is on licit methadone, it is completely safe for pregnancy and even recommended. Yes, some babies will need to be medically tapered off but more babies do not need tapering than do need tapering. If a woman is ONLY taking methadone as directed the baby will be fine but that is not to say that the woman may have 'other' underlying health/behavioral issues that the baby will have to deal with. Now Xanax is a whole different ball game. Xanax absolutely cannot be taken in the last trimester of a pregnancy, and should be taken very carefully and in low doses in the earlier trimesters. More times than not when a baby is born and the hospital does blood work they find benzodiazepines positive which creates a whole different level of care for the new born (and other illicit drug use). Now I know some people think it is crazy why women get pregnant on methadone but those folks need to look deeper as to the "Why" the woman is on methadone in the first place. Yes it would be nice to live in a Leave it to Beaver world and have only perfectly healthy woman have babies. And this goes for ALL health issues that a female can have...not just a woman who is receiving a medication from a physician like methadone. Now, for methadone...would those of you who think no pregnant female should be on methadone....have you thought about what would happen if she stopped taking methadone and WHY she is taking it in the first place. Nothing in this world is that black and white. I will also reiterate...xanax is COMPLETELY unsafe for a pregnant female in the last trimester and COMPLETELY unsafe for a pregnant female on methadone because the mixture can and does kill people every single day.

I went to my Pm yesterday and let him know that I wanted off the methadone. So since I had to see the NP because it was considered an emergency visit they decided they were going to put me on the patch where you wear it for three day then take it off. So I asked about the side effect and after hearing them something in me panic and snapped and I said forget I want off of everything. So as off right now I am coming off of the methadone. I decided that with the scare of my heart and the new neurological problems they only way to know is if I come off of the meds. I am still on the Topamax he did not want to take me off of that because I have been on it for over a year and never had a problem. SO I am hoping in with 2 months we will know if it was the meds causing the neurological problems or the something else.
What made me snap was I was telling him that I wanted something for the muscle because I was having a lot of spasms and tightness and off of the methadone and he totally ignored me and said well we are going to give you something a lot strong and this should work since the methadone has not been working. It was as if he was not listening to me. He said to me you are going to Cleveland clinic (CCF) to be treated for the muscle so the will figure it out soon, I said yes but I do not get medicine from them because I have a contract with you. I don't know why he would not give me a muscle relaxer but I feel better knowing that I am coming off of the medicine for a while I just hope I can handle the pain long enough to see of it is neurological or a side effect from the methadone....
Pain Management :: Oxy Vs. Methadone?
.I had a C5-C7 disc fusion done 5 years ago that alleviated all of the pain in my neck and shoulders. What I am left with is a severe case of peripheral neuropathy. My feet and legs are numb to the touch but hypersensitive when I walk so I cannot go very long distances without the tingling burning throbbing pain. This pain is heightened at night when I go to sleep thanks mostly to the 300mg of Lyrica twice daily. I had an EMG nerve conductivity test performed which of course indicated severe neuropathy.
Now I am going to a neurologist who says I have to put up with the pain. I am going back on Monday to my neurosurgeon to ask for a lower MRI (never done) and I wanted a referral to PM because the pain is out of hand on 600mg of Lyrica daily. I have been on Oxycodone before and hated it and I do not like the stigma attached to these drugs so I thought I would ask my doctors to consider Methadone. What does everyone think? I know Methadone has its own stigma but is long acting and something I NEED right now and probably for good as I have had this neuropathy for 5 years.
Substance Withdrawal :: Day 4 No Methadone
This morning was day 4 of no methadone for me. My addiction issues go back several years when I was prescribed percocet for post op knee surgery. Before that I've never put any kind of drug in my system whatsoever. I had access to opiates from family members and needless to say I started taking them. It led to the destruction of my marriage and a bitter custody battle of my precious baby girl. I got clean from everything about a year ago but within the last 6 months I relapsed and have been taking the methadone from my father which kills me because he loves me so much and would do anything in the world four me. Anyway today is day 4...I slept some last night. Haven't gotten the restless legs or anything. Just extreme anxiety that things will get worse and loss of energy and bad headache. I'm just hoping tomorrow will be better. I was only taking maybe 15mg at the most the entire 6 months. The last week I was down to like 5mg. So I hope things won't be too much worse.

After over 35 years on painkillers & methadone I'm down to 1mg from an all time historical high of 425mg daily...I have reduced over the last 6 months from 125mg, now on 1mg finishing next week. Do not let pain and panic mongers tell you how terrible it is, or it will become your experience merely by suggestion. Avoid people who relate horror stories, if you want to do this do it slowly, avoid users and poly abusers, or they will undo your complete rehabilitation.
