Subaru - Brakes - Imprezawrxsti :: Wobble When Braking
Caller had a problem with his car wobbling or vibrating while he was braking. The conclusion was that the rotors were warped. A quick google search would confirm that this is the most probable source of the wobble, but I'm not sure if it is correct for my problem:
I drive a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX. For quite a while not the steering and what feels like the whole car wobbles or vibrates when I brake. This is imperceptible at speeds under around 45 mph, but at high speeds it is VERY noticeable. It seems especially bad if I am going around 70 mph and lightly applying the brakes. The wobble does not happen unless the breaks are applied. So, warped rotors right? So I decided to check them and see if they are warped. I took both wheels, calipers, and rotors off my car and inspected the rotors.
My initial impression is that they looked as good as when I bought them. Of course an eye-ball diagnosis would not sufficiently answer my question so what I did was compare one rotor to the other. I put them together rotor on rotor to see if I could find any variation in shape. I figured that if one rotor was flat, while the other was warped, it would be noticeable. If both were warped, than the difference should be exaggerated. I did this multiple times to make sure I wasn't missing any warp or distortion. So as far as I can tell, they aren't warped. Another thing that I noticed, however was the brake pads. They were in good shape for the most part, but the corners/ends seems to be worn of at an angle about a quarter inch from the edge. I reassembled everything and when I drove the car, the wobble was gone. Now after about 15 minutes, the wobble returned.
Here are my Questions: Is my method of figuring out whether the rotor is warped reasonable? am i missing something? Why would the edges of the brake pads be worn down that drastically?Could the wobble come from something else? Struts? wheel bearings? bent wheel? If so, how can I diagnose/test which one it is?
Elantra GD (2013+) :: Noisy AC System - Distinct Whining Sound That Increases With Speed
My GT is very quiet when running and I like that. However, the AC system seems noisy when it is on. When I turn on the fan and heater, I hear a distinct whining sound that increases in frequency as I increase speed. When I turn the fan off, the car is whisper quiet. Also, when I turn the AC on, I can hear what sounds like coolant circulating through the system. At first it sounded like it was coming from the glove compartment and I thought it might be associated with the glove-compartment cooling feature, but I don't believe it is. The noise is not unbearable but it is noticeable and distracting to me.
Is this a noisy climate-control system or is this something unique to my car.
Subaru - Imprezawrxsti :: 2004 - Engine Self Destruction By Just Cranking With The Starter?
My daughter drives an 04 WRX. We purchased the car new, taught her to drive in it and have kept up with the maintenance. Including changing the timing belt and water pump about 13 months ago. The odometer was at about 96K then and is now at about 102K.A week ago my daughter came inside and told me that her car would not start. I went out turned the key. She was right, the engine cranked but would not fire. The cranking of the engine was unusually fast and the sound it made during cranking was off. I immediately thought that the starter was bust.I replaced the starter and while at it replaced the plugs the belts and the front pulley (the pulley because our Forester's pulley's rubber ring had recently de-bonded it self). I put it all back together and turned the key. To my horror the car would not start. The starter sound and crank speeds were the same as before I did my mini tune up.To bring the pain to an end I had the car towed to my local Subaru dealer. I momentarily blacked out when he called and told me that the timing belt had probably jumped and that the engine heads and valves were now ruined. My engine will need to be replaced. Final punch in the gut, it will cost $8000.Is this for real given that the engine did not start and that the damage would have had to be done by just cranking with the starter?

I have an 04 WRX, I've upgraded the suspension (1.5" - 1.75" drop front and back respectfully) and have a full set up of strut tower braces. Recently when accelerating from a stop, I get a clicking noise from the passenger front wheel area, I hear it all the way through first, second, and most of third...the sound is probably present after that but my exhaust drowns it out. My first choice of problem is that the CVs have gone, the car has 140k on it...
View 2 RepliesSubaru - Imprezawrxsti :: 2005 - Engine Starting To Idle At High RPM 3000 To 4000
The past two times I've driven to work I've hit significant traffic. While in the middle of stop and go traffic, the engine started to idle at high RPM (3000-4000). Today the temperature gauge really started climbing and hit the red, at which point I shut the car off and waited a few minutes. No smoke, no noise and no check engine lights. As soon as the road started to clear and we were moving again, the car was fine. The engine cooled, stayed cool, and the idle returned to it's normal 1000 RPM.
The dealer was unfortunately unable to reproduce these findings, though they thought it could be a stuck thermostat.
Subaru - Xt :: 2005 - Whining Sound With Acceleration Recently
I bought my car new. It began having a whining sound with acceleration recently (at 98+ thousand miles). A garage replaced the power steering pump, THEN told me I needed a turbo. No problem to drive it to dealership, waving bye-bye all the while. By now, the car is no whining, it is chugging along making strange metal sounds. Dealership confirms that I need a turbo, and also by the way, an engine. There is metal in the oil pan. I have now seen many blogs, complaints, etc. on line about a defect in the turbo on this car that causes oil starvation to the engine. Question: With metal in the oil pan, is there any hope in flushing the engine, replacing the turbo, and getting some mileage out of it? It has 99,000 miles. Has Subaru given any "good will" compensation for this? There were service bulletins about it.

View 2 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Turbine / Whining Sound When Slowing To A Stop Especially While Braking
My '10 is just over 2 years old now and virtually trouble-free. But since new, I have a noticeable turbine/whining sound slowing to a stop esp while braking from 20mph to a stop. I wrote it off to the motor generator and brake regeneration - hybrid sounds. All fine and well. But I have ridden in two other '10s in the last year and they both seem to make less sounds while decelerating and braking than mine. Is it my imagination or is there something to it? I'd rather not blindly bring it to the Dealer as I'm sure it would get a "normal operation" finding.
1. Is there a TSB out on this by chance?
2. My 3/36 warranty will be up in 10 months. Is there a master TSB listing available on PChat or elsewhere (for free) to check on open G3 Prius TSBs?
Subaru - Impreza :: 2006 - Loud Whining / Buzzing Sound When Started It
A few months ago, my car started making a loud whining/buzzing sound when I started it. The sound is distinctly coming through the speakers in the car, but turning the radio volume knob doesn't make it quieter or louder (though turning the radio completely off makes the sound stop). The sound persists until the car warms up, then the buzzing sound slowly fades away, and the voice/song on the radio slowly comes back until the buzzing sound is completely gone.
I recently took my car to a mechanic to have the timing belt and head gasket replaced, and the mechanic couldn't figure out what the problem was. What could be the root of this problem? 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5 ...

View 2 RepliesChrysler - 300c :: Transmission Makes A Distinct Clunking Sound When Downshifting
I have an '05 Chrysler 300C AWD with approximately 65k miles. The transmission makes a distinct clunking sound when downshifting and I am seeking advice about the cause and solution. For example, I live on a hill and when I slow down at the bottom of the hill the car will downshift and there is a clunking sound. This happens frequently when I am slowing down. In the past year the transmission quit 3x, in all cases the car would start and operate fine but would not go into gear - it would idle but nothing would happen when I put it in gear. The first two times the dealer kept the car for several days and made various adjustments and the car eventually worked again. The third time the Torque Converter was replaced, but the clunking noise continues.
View 3 RepliesCivic - Honda :: Distinct Squeaking Sound Like Something In Suspension Moving Or Creaking
I carried eleven 40 lb bags of dirt in my Honda Civic (1998) - in the trunk and backseat - and then drove about two miles with the dirt in my car. After unloading the dirt, when I got back into the car I heard a distinct squeaking sound - like something in the suspension moving or creaking - the sound seemed to come from the middle of the car. I started up my car and there was no sound but as soon as I began to drive I noticed that my car was leaning distinctly to the left and there was a rubbing and squealing sound coming from the left front end of the car - or so I think. I got out to check whether there was anything hitting the tire, but there wasn't.
I didn't drive the car very far, except to park it. The car is drivable, but just makes an unbelievably loud squealing/rubbing noise now. It does not pull to the left, but is leaning to the left as if something broke or cracked or I have a flat tire (which I don't).
I've carried heavy loads before - but perhaps this was the last for my Honda. I thought it might be the suspension, then maybe cracked CV boots. I have 129,000 on the car and have kept up maintenance on it.

Prius C :: High Pitched Whining Noise When Braking?
I've noticed more and more that when I am braking that I heard a high pitched whining noise. Sort of this ultrasonic type sound. It will only go away if I depress the brake pedal very firmly after being completely stopped. However every so often the firm press will not stop the noise. I hear it more in the evening on the way home than in the morning to work, though I may not be paying attention as much in the A.M. due to morning brain fog.
I don't hear it any other time. I'm worried something is wrong with my inverter.
Subaru - Legacy :: 2002 - Automatic Transmission Whining Noise
My 02 Legacy with 185k suddenly developed a whining noise I believe from the transmission. The noise coincides with engine rpm. The noise lessens when the load is taken off the transmission when at cruising speed. The trans shifts perfect and the fluid doesn't look too bad.

View 4 RepliesSubaru - Outback :: 2005 - Whistle Or Whining Noise Periodically
In the last couple of weeks I've been getting a whistle or whining noise I think from under my car periodically. It doesn't happen when I start the car, not when idling and starts at about 20/30 mph. I've had the car in the shop for regular maintenance, just replaced front bushings, put on new rear brake pads and new rotors. I've checked the car for anything that might cause wind since it comes and goes even while driving. Seems worse in hot, damp weather. Back to the dealer today because it was loud and they say drive shaft, but there is no vibration and the car is running very smoothly. It's driving me crazy when it happens because it almost sounds like a plane landing.
