Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 VW - High Pitch Whine From Alternator
I had a rebuilt alternator installed on Thursday and for the past two days when I start up the car there is a high pitch whine coming from what I believe is the alternator. Do some rebuilt alternators make noise when charging the batter after start-up? The alternator has a 3-year warranty and I'm going back to the shop tomorrow.
View 4 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: High Pitch Whine At 50 Mph
I've got a 2006 Prius - yesterday afternoon my wife and I noticed a high pitched whine coming from the front (maybe right hand side) of the car - we don't hear it until we reach about 50mph. It gets louder as we increase speed and then trails off when you step off the accelerator and can't hear it all below 48-45mph.
We bought the car new and are familiar with the various noises the car makes, but this one is new - never heard it before yesterday.
Prius (Gen 2) :: Faint High Pitch Whine When Braking
During around town driving I am experiencing a faint high pitch whine when braking. This sound is not mechanical, but more electrical coming from the dash-engine area. It is very noticeable when slowing between 40 mph to 20mph.
View 3 RepliesLexus ES 2007-12 :: High Pitch Jet Turbine Like Whine When Driving At 75 Mph
I just bought a 2007 es350 yesterday with 67k miles. When I test drove the car, the highway was too congested to get the car above 50 mph. So, the car sounded fine to me and I purchased it with a free 90 day, 3k mile powertrain/engine/transmission warranty. The car should still be under its standard 7 year 70k mile warranty as well, right?
Fast forward to today. The highway was less congested and I was able to get the car up to 80 mph. However, I noticed a constant hum start at 60 mph, which became louder and more high pitch at 75 mph. I am taking this back to the Lexus dealership from where I purchased it to get the sound diagnosed and repaired. I'm hoping it's a problem still covered by the warranty, like the differential (does the ES350 have a differential since it's fwd) or pinion bearings. Could it be something simple, like a bad tire?
Sonata NF (2006-10) :: High-pitch Whine At Highway Speeds
When I'm driving at a certain speed (usually between 65-70 mph), my 06 Sonata GLS V6 develops a really soft (but really annoying) high-pitched whine that decreases when you take your foot off the gas. Not much at other speeds (sometimes it will kick in real quick at high rpm before the automatic trans shifts), but when the car hits 66-67 mph that little subtle whine kicks in. By 75 mph, it's gone (I drive 75+). Sounds just like a high-pitched dog whistle.
Not a wind noise....sometimes it sounds like it comes from below me, sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the dash. Dealer don't hear anything (of course), even when I'm in the car with the tech and can hear it (maybe I'm part dog.....who knows).
Here's my guess.......I think that it's the electric fuel pump. Sometimes if I'm outside the car, I'll hear a whine back in the fuel area that is almost the same pitch as the whine I hear at 70. Since the whine varies (or disappears) with engine rpm and application of the gas pedal, my thought is that I'm hearing the fuel pump hit a certain pitch, which causes the whine.
2006 Sonata?
Toyota - Prius :: High Pitch Whine Or Hum From Front Right Side Of The Car
I've got a 2006 Prius - bought new in 2006. Yesterday I started to hear a high pitched whine or hum from what sounds like the front right side of the car. I hear it when the car reaches about 48-50 mph and seems to increase as you go faster. Once I let off the accelerator the sound slowly goes away. I know there are a lot of noises from the Prius, but this is one I've not heard before.
View 2 RepliesHonda - Cr-v :: High Pitch Whine Coming From Engine Area Which Increases When Rev The Gas
Our 2008 Honda CR-V w/120k one owner, always dealer maintained, vehicle has recently started exhibiting a little high pitch whine coming from the engine area which increases when you rev the gas. I checked the transmission dipstick and the level is just below the bottom hole (owners manual says it should be between the bottom and top hole). Would this make the whine? By adding some fluid should it go away? Is it okay to use a fluid other than Honda's?
View 3 RepliesChevy - Suburban :: 2002 - Noise And Vibration Between 65 To 70mph
I have a 2002 chevy suburban 4wd with 156000 miles.. I had tires replaced last week due to them being chopped. They caused a low humming noise between 65-70mph. That was coming from the front.Below or above this speed the sound was not noticeable. I had new Coper AT-3 tires replace all around and balanced 5 days ago. The noise has become worse and starts at 61 mph and gets louder up to 70 an with a slight vibration . I have not gone above that speed to se if the noise goes away as I feel a bit uncomfortable going any faster with this issue . The tires were balanced so was wondering if I have bad tires or if the new tires being all terrain are causing more strain on what could be a bearing. The wheel bearings are fine and the rear bearings and pinion bearing were replaced two months ago . I know all terrains will make noise but not to this extent .

View 3 RepliesLexus - Es300 :: Low Pitch Growling In Reverse / High Pitch Screech When Apply Brakes
I have a 1995 Lexus ES300 with 130,000 miles on it. When I reverse, I get a low-pitch growling and as as soon as I apply the brakes by a high-pitch, ungodly screech. This noise is definitely coming from the rear wheel areas. I'm not sure which tire is the culprit (I hear both sides from while listening from both the inside and outside). It happens frequently but is particularly bad on rainy, snowy, misty, or high humidity days. Two years ago I replaced the pads and rotors. At this point, the pads look to have about 40% life on them yet. This problem started happening about a year ago.
My initial thoughts were that it was just rusting because of the frequency on high moisture days. But both noises are way too loud for that. My second speculation was that the emergency brake was catching, but after examining it I think not. I've taken the entire assembly (brakes, rotors calipers, and emergency brake) at each tire apart and looked for any obvious issues that look incorrect. No luck. I've also applied brake quiet with similar results. Now my thoughts are that the low pitch is the rotors being warped. But that doesn't explain the screech and why it only occurs in reverse.
Honda - Accord :: 2002 - High Pitch Noise Upon Accelerating After Replacing The Belt
I bought a 2002 accord with 105800 miles 3 weeks ago. I got the timing belt and water pump replaced within a week of that. I have noticed that the car makes a high pitch noise upon accelerating after replacing the belt. It does not happen always, but sometimes. I have noticed it on 3 days in last 2 weeks. A preliminary web search tells me that it could be a tight timing belt.

This has begun in the last few weeks on my '02 SF (which only has a couple of months left until it is retired )....
If I'm going anywhere between about 90-110 KM, I'll hear an odd high pitched whine. It sounds almost like microphone feedback, and I'm having a really hard time trying to find out where the sound is coming from. It is very subtle and comes and goes.
Toyota - Corolla :: 2002 - Engine Noise On Acceleration - A/C High Pitch Noise
I have a 2002 Corolla with about 180,000 miles that has been well maintained, but I know very little about cars.
Over the past months, I've noticed the engine noise on acceleration sounds a bit louder than I would expect it to, and it seems to be getting louder over time. It's slow changing, so I'm a little unsure. And occasionally I wonder if I don't hear a sound that shouldn't be there, though I couldn't describe it yet. Mechanic said the acceleration noise is normal at start-up for older cars until they get warm, but this happens even after I've been driving a while. Worth the $100 for an engine checkup?
Also, the A/C doesn't seem to be the strongest and has a high pitch noise when I run it. Normal?
Suburban :: 2001 Chevy - AC Blowing Intermittently

View 16 RepliesSanta Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: 2011 V6 - Low Pitch Cyclical Whine At Speeds Between 5 And 15 Mph
We've got a 2011 Santa Fe V6 that's putting out a low pitch cyclical whine at speeds between 5 and 15 mph. It could be making the sound at higher speeds but if it is the engine/wind noise drown it out.
If you're coasting or braking and drop below 5-7 mph, the noise cuts out completely and abruptly. Makes noise regardless of A/C running or off. Sounds like a motor turning on and off. Never makes noise while parked and revved, only while moving at low speeds (stop and go traffic, driving through parking lots, etc) - and is just loud enough to drive us crazy wondering what it is!
Dealer service center checked it out for 3 days - 4 different techs drove it, all heard the noise, but none knew where it was coming from. When you're driving, it seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine.
On a side note, we first started hearing this noise after we got it back from dealer service, where they replaced the TPS and A/C compressor. I'm wondering if it could be from something they had to move to access the compressor?
