Prius (Gen 1) :: Fuel Gauge Reads Full Bars Only When Tank Get Empty
I'm new to the Gen 1.
All has been well in just over a month of driving the car and about 3300 miles logged. The 12v, Aux battery was dead from the car sitting on the lot for so long (I replaced with a new OEM Toyota 12v battery) After a week of the car experiencing dim headlights, and various other electronics
No codes or CEL though.
Now that the 12v battery has been replaced, the car runs exceptionally well, aside from an intermittent fuel gauge issue where it only reads full bars (completely full) if I let the tank get to empty (Flashing single bar) or close to that. If I fill the tank from s

I was heading to the gas station with one bar on the fuel gauge. When I got there to fill up I had two bars, same Miles To Empty (45). What would cause that?

View 1 RepliesPrius (2001-03) :: Parking Brake Light Does Not Lit Up When Engaged / Fuel Gauge Bars Blinking
I have a 2002 Prius with about 150,000 miles on it. A couple weeks ago, I noticed that the parking brake light on my instrument cluster didn't light up when I engaged it. Soon, all 10 bars on the fuel gauge started blinking. The seat belt reminder, open door warning, and headlight indicator lights aren't working, either. Any clues as to what could be causing all these malfunctions, or have I had more than one problem develop in close succession?
View 6 RepliesPrius (Gen 2) :: 2008 Fuel Gauge Broken - New Gas Tank?
As of recently, my 2008 Prius fuel gauge shows only 1 flashing bar unless the fuel level is more than half-full.
I just got a quote from the dealer; they said it will cost me $ 900 + to replace the whole fuel tank, as fuel gauge is not a replaceable part. Yap, the whole gas tank needs to be replaced for fuel sender!
Well, I find this hard to believe, but i guess it is possible that they have built everything together as one big replaceable unit.
BTW, if this is true then Toyota is not making environmentally friendly vehicles, when we have to throw away perfectly good gas tank and other parts within in order to replace a moving part that is most likely to fail.
Prius (Gen 2) :: Tank Is Not Full But Fuel Pump Keeps Clicking Off
This has happened to me 4 times now in the 7 years I've owned my car. It happened so infrequently I thought the problem was the pump's sensor was not working properly. However now it's happened twice the last two times I've tried to fill up. On Friday my son was supposed to fill the car and could only get 1 gallon in and the fuel pump kept clicking off as if the car is full of gas. The bars never moved and I thought the problem was the pump. Then today, Sunday 2 days later, I decided to go ahead and fill it up. I have 250 miles to drive and want a full tank of gas. The tank shows 3 bars. I started fueling and it clicked off at 1 gallon. So I pulled the pump trigger again and tried to force more fuel in and it stopped and wouldn't add anymore than 1.7 gallons.
So now I have a long drive tomorrow and I can't figure out why the pump is clicking off as if the tank is full yet it can't be because I drove 250 miles since my son tried to put gas in and it's showing I have 3 bars.
Prius (Gen 2) :: Fuel Pump Automatically Stopped After Less Than A Quarter Tank
I just picked up a gen II prius last week. it came with 70k miles and almost a full tank, i think 2 'pips' were gone. since I got my car I've driven a total of 135 miles and already my fuel level went down to 2 pips.
I needed to fill up my tank, so on my way home today I went to a gas station filled up with 87 octane fuel. The fuel pump automatically stopped after about 5 gallons. I had less than a quarter tank, therefore my car should not be full with 5 gallons, according to the manual the tank is just shy of 12 gal. I know my prius has the shrinking bladder or whatever since its a g II, but this is a little extreme. According to my car, I've been getting an average of 35 mpg.
Prius (Gen 3) Fuel :: Would MPG Drops By Not Filling Tank After Pump Clicks Off
I just bought a 2014 Prius- Pkg. 2 car. I had an '06 & an '08 Prius and kept the tire pressure @ 44 Lb.s for maximum mileage. I always fill my tank to the top well after the pump clicks off.
1) The dlr. told me I will only get an accurate MPG by not filling the tank after the pump clicks off. He claims the computer doesn't read the extra 1-2 gallons and that is causing me to get about 35 MPG even though the trip meter says 50 MPG.
2) The dlr. told me not to run my tires @ 44 lbs. Said it is a safety issue. I've been doing 44 lbs. since 2006 with great mileage and no safety issues.
Am I wrong for filling my tank to the top? My Prius has just over 600 miles today.
Prius (Gen 2) Fuel :: Tank Seems To Hold Increasingly Less Gas With One Notch Left On Gauge
I have a 2007 Prius with just under 83,000 miles on it. I've always gotten in the mid to low 40s in mpg, no matter how I drive. It's lower in the winter & higher in the summer. Over the past year or so, the gas tank seems to hold increasingly less gas. With one notch left on the fuel gauge, it only takes about 6 gallons to 'fill' up. Most recent mpg shows about 45, but I was down to one notch after only 263 miles. I recently replaced both the hybrid and the auxiliary batteries. So, what my issue is?!?!?

I inadvertently pulled the fuse which controls the fuel gauge yesterday while looking for the fuse that controls the AC outlets. I put the fuse back but now the fuel gauge is stuck at 1 (blinks) and it will not go up - I know I have a full tank.
I called the dealer where I bought it and the guy said to leave the car off for an hour to let it reset, that did nothing. The dealer is an hour round trip for me and I'd rather not have to hike out there, what I can do to reset the gauge?
Prius (2004-09) :: Fuel Gauge Stuck After Some Gas Overflow
The last time I got gas the shut off switch on the gas hose did not shut off. I was standing there and I shut it off immediately. There was some overflow. I have gone 170 miles since this fill up and the fuel gauge has not budged from totally full. I bought the car new and normally it would be down about half a tank by now.
I disconnected the 12 v battery. After reconnecting it the fuel gauge still reads totally full. I know about the problems with the gen 2 fuel tank- bladder, fuel pump and other components inside the tank.
I wouldn't be excited about getting a new fuel tank with only 43k miles.

Prius (2004-09) :: Fuel Gauge Stuck On Half-full
I was involved in a collision and had my 2005 Prius (direct from Japan import) in a collision repair shop. The shop performed the necessary electronic checks and fixed the superficial damage to the Prius. After a time, the car was completed and I drove it off-the petrol gauge was at the half tank mark.
One week later, driving 80k (~50m) a day, my gas gauge is still at the half tank mark. I decided to fill up the tank. I paid for what seemed to be almost a full tank price...and the gas gauge increased by one increment only. It still hovers at one bar over the half mark.
Scouring the web, and this site, I found a fuel calibration protocol. Here it is .....
Prius (Gen 2) :: 2009 - Gas Bars Show Zero But The Tank Is Full
We just got through changing out the 12 volt battery. Car is 2009 and had 60k miles but last summer was a killer hot summer in Texas. The care was doing strange things with the first start of the day with the triangle! coming on and then having to turn off the car and power back on to get it to go. So all posts seemed to indicate bad battery. We checked diagnostics and it was showing 9 volts. So now it is changed, diagnostics shows 12 volts but the gas indicator went to nothing. no bars. yesterday it was all bars. I supposed someone could have siphoned off all my gas last night but highly unlikely and too coincidental that it shows that after the battery change. Is there something we need to reset?
View 2 RepliesSonata I45 (LF 2015+) :: Gas Gauge Stuck At 3/4 Tank
Took my vehicle into a dealership but they couldn't figure it out. Basically, I have a brand new 2015 Sonata 2.0T Limited. Car has been great but 2 months or so ago the gauge showed less and less fuel upon filling tank. If I go to really old pump stations it will fill up all the way but any of the new or majority of stations the tank shuts the pump off prior to filling to full. The dealership called Hyundai but no one seems to know and I'm worried that if they don't know what the cause is they won't repair it.
