Prius (2004-09) :: Metallic Rattling Noise On Acceleration
While driving through a tunnel today I noticed a metallic rattling noise upon acceleration. It goes away immediately when I let me foot off the gas and when I park the car and rev the engine the sound does not occur.
A few days ago, I had to rapidly accelerate and it felt as though I lost power for a split second. I am not sure if these are related, but I am hoping its not some sort of transmission issue (unless that is covered under the hybrid warranty. What was the diagnosis?
Dodge - Grandcaravan :: 2002 - Metallic Rattling Sound At Transaxle
My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan has a sound metallic rattling at about transaxle area (I am not sure if it's a transaxle issue) when it's cold but when it's at operating temperature, I don't hear it anymore. Fluid level is correct and clean, I just have the fluid changed. Shifting is fine, just annoying sound, not loud but it can be heard easily.

Front end makes metallic rattling/clanking sound. This happens when I make a right-hand turn, and the noise comes from the left-front wheel area. I describe it as the sound of dropping a handful of pots and pans.
View 4 RepliesCamry :: Cover On Shocks Loose - Metallic Like Pinging Noise
I currently own a 2007 Camry LE 4cycl, and so far its been running great with about 115000kms. First off, I was rotating my tires and notices that the outer cover on the shocks (all 4) is loose...is this normal or is it a sign that they need changing (I have never changed anything related to suspension, so i wouldn't know)?
This is what I am referring to: [URL] .....
The second issue is more difficult to pinpoint. When i am stopped at a stop sign or light, and i accelerate I hear kind of a pinging noise, if i rev the engine in neutral i don't hear the noise. I had the dealer check it and they said it could be the flex pipe, which i had changed but the noise is still there. What it could be? The pinging noise is like a metallic noise, i.e., like pins inside a metal container.
Toyota - Tacoma :: Metallic Grinding / Pinging For Roughly A Second When Start To Accelerate
I drive a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and wound up doing a bit of unexpected rock crawling on a recent camping trip. After a whole lot of cussing and praying I got out with a couple of dents. Since then, I started to notice a strange noise. When I shift from 2nd to 3rd (~2500 rpm) and start to accelerate, I hear a metallic grinding/pinging for roughly a second. The clutch is fully released and it happens whether or not the engine is hot. It's the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder.
View 1 RepliesPrius V :: Engine Ping (rattling Metallic Sound) Under Load
When accelerating up a steep grade the engine will ping (rattling metallic sound) when reaching a certain RPM, but stop pinging as I continue to push the accelerator down and increase the RPM. Should I be concerned? Could it be something else, loose exhaust heat shield or something? Or is this normal behavior for a gasoline engine? My old Honda Fit never had engine ping/knock that i can recall in its 200,000km of service running the same 87 octane gas.
View 15 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Metallic Rattling Noise Coming From Transmission When Switched To N
Noticed a weird metallic rattling noise coming from the transmission when switched to N with the engine running and the car is stationary? Almost like the gears are rattling inside while in N position. I took it to the dealer and their Prius guru said this is normal characteristic of eCVT....
View 4 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Metallic Rattle Sound During Acceleration
I'm back with another question! My 2006 Prius now has 60,XXX miles and the other day while driving with the windows down, I was climbing a hill to my house and when the engine is at a certain RPM, there is a metallic sound that comes from under the car, but more in the front. You can't even hear it when the windows are up barley, but more when they are down, you can hear it, especially when you're beside a wall or guard rail and the sound can reverberate back.
View 2 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Buzzing And Rattling Sounds At Around The Top Of Dash
I've been hearing buzzing and rattling sounds somewhere around the top of the dash in the mornings when the car was cool, by the afternoon many times the sound would go away a little while when the car warmed up in the sun.
Sometimes it would buzz when it was cold or hot. It sounded like it was coming from the HSI display area, but I couldn't quite nail down where it was because its a little to far to reach while driving. Also I didn't want to scratch the clear plastic cover with my fingernail.
Camry :: 2002 2.4L - Engine Rattling Noise On Acceleration
My Camry has about 338K miles. Started making an engine rattling noise on acceleration. suspected worn timing components. I have all timing components off now. Of course plastic chain guides are worn, tensioner plunger seemed to be a little rough in actuation, exhaust cam sprocket does show signs of wear. I dont know for certain that replacing all timing components will clear noise. Questions are: considering mileage should i just replace all the timing components or the likely cause of the rattle noise(whatever that may be)? Should i replace the oil pump while i have pan off? How much trouble would it be to pull head and do valve job at this point? Lastly....2002 Camry has the 2.4 VVTI with the intake cam sprocket. How do i replace this sprocket and is it difficult?

Just purchased 2007 Prius Touring model w/ Package 6. Wonderful car.
I hear a buzzing/rattling noise when stopping at low speeds or starting at low speeds. It seems to be coming from the drivers side. Doesn't happen every stop/start.
Prius (Gen 2) :: 2006 - Knocking And Rattling Sounds Coming From Left Tire
I currently own a 2006 prius which has done about 100k km. I've been hearing knocking and rattling sounds coming from the left tire whenever I go over a rough patch of road or even a speed bump, between slow to moderate speeds. It's currently bearable, but it gets irritating at times and it seems to be getting louder. What is the cause of these noise and how I can rectify it? I wish to get rid of it.
View 5 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Metallic Sounds When In Reverse
See this thread (or the countless others) for background info: [URL] .....
Basically, at least for me, ever since my R32 was new I would hear this metallic "tink" sound when in reverse. Usually noticed at the end of reversing, just about when I hit the brakes to shift into drive. It happened always. Flat ground, slopes, cold engine, warm engine, etc...
It sounded like a coin dropped from my engine and landed on a piece of sheet metal. It never bothered me enough to take it in for service, but it was still annoying.
After a fellow OZ R32 owner suggested dampening the tranny cable with silicone (or similar), I finally decided to take a crack at this sucker. You'll have to remove the airbox to access the heat shield.
Here's a closer look at the problem area:
And a closer look, showing the torn heat shield that protects the tranny cable from the exhaust. The obvious guess here is the tear was allowing the shield to move against itself, causing the noise I would hear.
All I did was bend the shielding away from the cable a bit so that they weren't pressed against each other anymore. Didn't bother trying to insulate the cable with silicone or anything. Fixed my problem 100%, can't believe I've waiting this long to do this 5 minute fix.
Civic - Honda :: Engine Making Loud Rattling Pinging Noise When Step On Gas
I drive a 1998 Civic hatchback. Last night while I was driving I needed some gas. I pulled into a station and the only gas they had available was 93 (highest octane). I only ever fill up with 87 or whatever the lowest grade is, so I put 2 gallons in to get me to my destination and the opportunity to find another gas station. Shortly after, I was back on the highway and the engine starts making a loud rattling pinging noise when I step on the gas. I normally might have a low rattle or ping that I've never been able to get rid of, but never loud like this.
Then a few things happened– smoke starts coming out the exhaust, the check engine light comes on, and the car starts to overheat. Seems like it was pretty much all at once, although it was in that order that I noticed... I rolled the windows down and turn the heat on high, but the air coming through the system wasn't at all hot. I got off the highway and as I downshifted, the engine started to smoke a little. I get to the end of the off-ramp and the engine dies. It wouldn't start back up right away but I managed to start it a couple of times (between it dying) to get it to coast into a parking lot. Under the hood, there was coolant everywhere it seemed, but I couldn't see anything else apparently wrong– hoses, etc.
In the end I had AAA tow it home. So, what happened and what I'm looking at now in terms of repairs? I will need to have it towed again to a mechanic if it is something I can't figure out myself.
Accent RB (2012+) :: Pinging Under Acceleration

My car is accent 1.4 A/T 2012, and lately I've been hearing this metallic knocking sounds underneath my car. it happens every time after i drove my car for a longer distance and even on a shorter distance with no minimum running speed, you can hear the metallic knocking sounds whether the engine is on or off. Sometimes it is too loud you don't have to go out from the car you just have to roll the window down to hear it.
I've brought this already to my dealer and told me it was normal but I don't want to accept their answer so i refer it to another hyundai dealer. the second dealer made an adjustments on the muffler and catalytic something and even upgraded the CEU but to no avail and even adjusted my steering preload. BUT I'm still hearing it!! What to do.
Toyota - 4runner :: Pinging / Knocking On Hard Acceleration
I have a 98 Toyota 4Runner, which just started what I'm told is pinging or knocking on "hard accelerations", like accelerating on the merge lane when I see cars coming up behind me in the lane I want to merge into, or going uphill. i have 258,000 miles, and have the SUV serviced regularly and get things fixed when they need it. I told the dealer about it a month ago when I had regular servicing, and he did something to clean the fuel injector, and suggested I try 89 octane (he specifically recommended Sunoco), and if that worked I could try going back to 87 octane (Sunoco was his recommendation again). I did as he suggested, and the pinging/knocking seemed to get better with 89, but returned with 87. I read the Q&A on this, but still have questions. Why did this just start after 14 years? Should I do anything about, in other words is it harmful? If so, what should I do? Does the brand of gasoline have anything to do with this, or anything else for that matter? I am hoping to keep the SUV for a couple more years (300,000 miles), maybe longer.
View 19 RepliesAccent RB (2012+) :: Pinging And Crackling Noises On Acceleration
I have been experiencing pinging and crackling noises on acceleration from my vehicle it was purchased from the dealers May 2012. The problems started in October and I have been back and forth with the dealers for the same problems over and over and getting additional problems. Not to mention they keep saying that the problem is fixed and as I leave the compound I hear the noises.
I took it to have an independent scan from the dealer as it is now 5 months of run around with the issue not being resolved and I found out I have a bad ac compressor, steering rack and shock mount.
Ford - Ranger :: 2007 - Slight Pinging Under Acceleration
Our 2007 Ford Ranger PJ 4x4 3L diesel automatic pings slightly on acceleration when the engine is not loaded. When pulling a caravan it pings very badly for an extended time. I release the throttle slightly to stop the pinging. If the EGR is not functioning, engine light on and scan tool displaying code 2143, there is no sign of a ping under any conditions. I did need to replace the Timing Reference Sensor on the flywheel housing due to a fault.
