Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Display Consumption Bars Too High?
Just bought a 2012 Prius Three last Friday. The MFD (upper display) shows an average of about 53 mpg so far, and the corresponding 1 & 5 min bars seem to make sense (we have an 07 TCH so we're reasonably familiar).
But the Display Audio unit (6.1 inch) Car>Consumption graph seems to show 100mpg most of the time/most bars. That can't be right and it looks nothing like the MFD display. What am I missing?
Prius (2010-12) :: How Many Miles Can Be Driven After Zero Miles Left To Empty
How many miles can be driven after the computer tells you have zero miles left to empty? Or rather how many gallons do you think is left in the tank after the computer says you're empty?
View 19 RepliesPrius V Fuel :: 2008 Gen II Versus 2014 Consumption Display
I kept a record of every drop of fuel used in my 2008 Gen II Prius. It was easy with only two simple screens: Energy and Consumption. After writing down the numbers I reset the Consumption screen at every fill up. I entered these into a spreadsheet that did a bunch of calculations telling me all kinds of interesting things.
Now to my new 2014 Prius v Two. I'm confused regarding all the new information available. (A good thing) Which screen and number am I looking for that is equivalent to the Miles and cumulative MPG on the old Gen II?
Would like to sort this out before my first fill on the new car.
Prius (Gen 3) Fuel :: Accuracy Of Miles To Empty Meter?
Just wondering about the "miles to empty meter", should I disregard it when I have high mpg? (50-60 mpg)

View 12 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Oil Consumption At 136k Miles - Too High
The oil consumption started around 90-100k miles. My wife mostly drives the car so I just check it and fill it without keeping track of mileage. Last week I had a lot of driving to do so I topped off the oil before starting my trip and put a 5 qt 5-20w bottle in the back. I've been through two liters in 2100 miles! Sheesh - I'm ticked off. I do my own oil changes at least every 10k miles, always use 0-20w or 5-20w full synthetic oil (usually Mobil 1). I replaced the spark plugs at 119k miles per maintenance schedule.
Besides the oil consumption, since 115k miles the engine can get into a mode where it misses a little bit at low power once it is completely warmed up. I have a good code reader and nothing ever shows up. I expected the new spark plugs would fix it, but they didn't change anything about how it runs. It is slowly getting worse. I'm going to wait until a code in the ECU is set before fixing it. It could be an ignition coil. I suspect it is an O2 sensor which causes the AFR to be too lean which makes the mix hard to ignite. Time will tell. It runs fine when cruising at highway speeds.
We bought this 2010 Prius III, not 3, new in October 2010. The only out-of-the-ordinary thing we do is live in northern Wyoming where it can be very cold for a long time. We drive 85 mph for long distances to go shopping and visit friends. The gas mileage is the same as it has always been. It varies between 42 and 50 mpg in the summer and 35 and 45 in the winter.
Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Fuel Gauge Started Blinking And Miles To Empty Reading Pretty Low
I have had my PIP for just about one month now and I have only filled up twice. This car is awesome! I noticed when I filled up the last few times that the last block on the fuel gauge started blinking and my miles to empty reading was pretty low. However, when I filled up the tank, it only took around 9,2 gallons. Doesn't this car have a 10.6 gallon tank?
View 19 RepliesPrius (2010-12) Fuel :: High Fuel Consumption While Coasting With Charge Available?
When I go out to do errands around town (I live right in town) I get horrendous gas mileage. Now, I understand gas mileage is high at the beginning of a trip, but for this long and this high and under these circumstances? I'm getting ABOVE 10l/100km when I have 80% charge available (for americans, that's disgustingly high MPG like, pick-up truck high), AND my foot is completely off the gas. Literally, coasting, or braking, and I'm still sucking up gas. What the heck?
Is this just because it takes a certain amount of time for the engine to run no matter what or something? I still don't see any reason for me to be eating up all that gas when my foot isn't even on the gas AND most importantly, I have charge available. Feels pointless for me to use my car for what I use it for 70% of the time, which is for quick errands around town at low speeds. Thought the prius was suppose to be a superstar for this kind of thing.
Prius (Gen 3) Fuel :: 2012 - How Many Miles Does Full Tank Display
So I'm now on my second week with this 2012 Prius and still trying to learn how to roll in it.
I filled up my very first tank yesterday (dealer gave me a full tank when I bought it) and the miles remaining display said 424 miles after I filled up. Does it display 424 on all Priuses by default?
The first tank gave me right around that many miles before I filled up - the miles remaining display said I had 9 miles left so I got too scared to see if I could go farther. But when I filled it, I only filled just under 10 gallons - does that mean there's more miles for me to drive, despite that remaining miles meter?
And...am I getting pretty bad fuel economy?
Prius (2010-12) :: When Braking Engine Would Sound And MPG Indicates Fuel Consumption
Yesterday we were on a 10 hour trip and the engine was acting oddly; when braking, the engine sounded just like the engine brake, but the MPG indicated that it was consuming fuel (engine brake does not consume fuel). When braking, the engine would sound, and the MPG indicator indicates fuel consumption, it would go down to 50, with the heavier braking, like when stopping... then at a certain point it would suddenly stop
It seemed to happen most times but not always. This issue didn't happen before.
Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Single Cell Displayed In The Fuel Display
I am new to the prius 2010.
I filled up last week and I noticed that as soon as a single cell display in the fuel display part has some empty section like 3/4 fuel(single cell) the next day or after that that whole cell disappears without it showing that single cell as being empty.
Around which fuel cell, when displayed, is it important and recommended to fill up gas again, with one cell remaining or two etc.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Fuel Gauge Display Normal And Occasionally Just Drop Straight To Empty
Got a Vr6 a couple weeks ago and recently the gauge has been acting strange. Few days ago the gauge went from normal to showing completely empty and did that for a couple days (gauge would just display normal and occasionally just drop straight to empty and sit there until restart) but yesterday it started just sitting on full. Even when restarted just goes to full. I assume its the sender unit ....

View 1 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: High Oil Consumption At 200,000 Miles
I have noticed my oil consumption has jumped to 1 1/2 quarts at 3000 miles..(it has been changed every 3 to 4000 miles) and is always very dark.. There's no leaks and the spark plugs were clean (just a little ash) when I changed them with the last oil change. No smoke from the tail pipe and the car still gets 45/48 mpg ..
View 8 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: VW 1.6 SR (AKL Engine) Rough Running / High Fuel Consumption
Regarding my problem (outline below):
>> Went for a refueling stop, and thereafter proceeded onto the highway
>> Approx. 500m into the drive onto the highway the car started jerking and running rough with an initial puff of smoke (none thereafter)
>> Immediately after this initial jerking/shuddering there was a significant increase in fuel consumption i.e. from a familiar 8.2L/100km to 18L/100km in the cruise
>> We continued driving not knowing what it was (I suspected a spark plug may have stopped working)
>> Pulled up at the gas station to observe what went wrong inside the engine bay - no signs of any leaks, fuel sprays, etc. but only that the engine was shaking
>> I checked the rear of the car while the car was idling and observed a pulsating sound...some light smoke and a fuel-rich egg-like smell
>> Asked around and I was led to think the catalytic converter was ruined, so the next day I had the catalytic converter cut out
>> After removing the catalytic converter the problem persisted...although the engine operated with slightly less flow resistance
Attempt at diagnosing the problem
>> My wife called in a technician from BMW at Canal Walk to come have a look and what errors were flagged
>> The tech ran the diagnostic and no fault codes were indicated, except a few short circuit faults due to my incorrectly placing -ve on +ve when I tried to charge my cars battery with jumper cables
>> He proceeded to ask if we changed the spark plugs, I said yes. He then looked at the oil on the intake manifold and said there could be a torn valve on the intake manifold and that air that is not measured by the air mass flow sensor is entering the engine, which is causing the car to rev hunt (this problem of rev hunting has been with us for a while). The engine also shuts down uncommanded at stops and sometimes between shifting gears with the subsequent loss of power steering (very dangerous!!)
>> We also had the O2 sensor replaced a month before this occurence
The images attached (#1- #3) are marked up to indicate the component I am referring to.

Went to Cape City VW in Cape Town and the part number for that orange thing/diaphragm is 06A 198 205A 'Repair kit for valve'. Is this significant? The car sounds as strange at idle...as if has noisy valves. I can upload (if there is an option) a sound clip of how the car sounds if this assists.
Prius (Gen 2) :: Cannot Reset Average MPGs On Consumption Display
I have a "new to me" 2009 Touring that I purchased on 9/2/10. She had approximately 35K miles on her and an Average MPG of 39.6. While I have managed to increase that average up to 41.7, I'm tired of looking at the results of the previous owner's bad habits.
I have hit the Reset button on the Consumption screen several times, but the only thing resetting is the number of miles driven. I have reset both the Trip A and Trip B Odometers, again the only change is the trip odometer reading, NOT the Average MPGs.
This is making me a little crazy as my previous car was a 2004 Prius and the Average MPGs AND miles driven automatically reset any time I filled up with fuel.

View 6 RepliesPrius (Gen 3) :: Miles To Empty Not Accurate?
Where the Miles to Empty Display seems out of whack? Filled up my car last night and it gave an estimate of 508 Miles to Empty. Drove 40 miles in 2 different trips one of 8 another of 32 and the display is down to 442. Is this a common occurrence? I'm assuming its just because I didn't get as good of MPG as the computer was expecting but on the exit screen when I turned the car off it said I averaged 51mpg on the 32 mile trip and the 8 mile trip was 70mpg. I'm not "concerned" about it but it does throw me off and makes me think I might not be getting as good of MPG as I am being told on the exit screen.
View 19 RepliesElantra MD (2010-15) :: Miles To Empty Range Has Been Dropping Every Time Tank Filled Up
So when I first got my car, the dealer had put in a full tank of gas and the miles to empty range was at 347~. After several fill ups since my purchase, the miles to empty has been dropping every time I filled up. A few fill ups ago, I remember it was 327. The latest fill up was about 318. What gives? Do the current MPG avg affect this number? What is the factor for the variance?
