Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Small Whine Coming From A/C Compressor?
Noticed a small whine coming from the A/C compressor? I caught ear of it the other morning when I was putting the trash on the street and the truck was running. It's definitely the A/C because when you cut it off the noise goes away.
View 2 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: 2010 - Whine On Transaxle / Fluid Change
I have a 2010 Prius and need to change the Transaxle fluid. I have the Haynes repair manual, but it only shows the drain and fill plugs for the Gen II. I have found what looks like the drain plugs but am not sure of it. Fill appears to be right next to the CV axle and the drain is straight down from the CV axle. Are these the correct fill and drain plugs?
Also, this transaxle seems to have a whine to it. Whines only at kind of a neutral throttle. Throttle pressure or backing off on the throttle reduces the whine. Is this normal or what?

View 2 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Buzzing And Vibration From AC Compressor
I've bought a used Prius 2010 V this winter and didn't use AC until summer. Now that it's summer I have noticed that AC compressor is pretty loud (esp. when turned on for a few seconds) - loud enough that it can be heard even when engine is running but faintly. Some vibration from compressor also can be felt when not moving (parked) and touching brake pedal. Noise is about as loud as mobile phone left on vibrate on a wooden desk, but higher pitch and a bit muffled, or as loud as a climate control fan on max setting. Would that be normal?
View 9 RepliesPrius (2010-12) :: Air Conditioner Compressor Noise
I have a 2013 Prius with few miles. It seems like the air conditioner compressor makes a very loud humming noise. It's a little annoying inside, but outside it is really loud. I know it is running off an electric motor and I expect that to make some noise, but this seems excessive. Is this normal? Also, the compressor keeps running all the time. I thought they were supposed to cycle on and off. It seems like all air conditioning compressors do this to conserve energy, even a house air conditioning unit.
View 19 RepliesFord Super Duty (1999-2016) :: AC Not Blowing Cold / Compressor Making Whine Noise
This week was our first nice week of the year. Monday I got in my truck at lunch time turned the a.c. on and it blew ice cold. Today my truck sat in the sun all day and I got in it and turned the a.c. on. I noticed instead of the normal "click" you hear when the clutch engages in the a.c. compressor I got a wine and wimper kind of noise. The system never cooled the air after this happened. Is the compressor shot? Is it safe to drive or is the compressor going to tear itself up and send metal pieces thru the system?
View 7 RepliesLexus RX 2010-15 :: Poor Downshift In Cold - Is This Normal
Since the outside temperatures fell to teens and sometimes into single digits, I noted that my RX has developed something I do not remember from the past two winters: in the morning, the RX has poor downshift quality - when I start driving it upshifts just fine, but when I need to slow down it "feels" like the transmission wants to stay in higher gear, that is it downshifts but later than I would expect and I can feel the downshift as well. After driving for 2-3 min. the problem disappears. I always warm up my RX for at least two minutes or to the point when the tach reading is <1K rpm
I called the dealer and the SA told me that in cold weather I should warm it up "for at least 15 to 20 minutes, if you don't you may damage your transmission". When I told him that idling the engine does not warm the transmission because the insides of the transmission do not move, he replied "It's true but the pump is working and the fluid is moving."
Prius C :: 2012 - Poor Mpg After Installing New Tires
I purchased 4 new low-resistance Michelin Fuel Savers tires at 68k miles for my 2012 Toyota Prius C. For 3 1/2 years and immediately before I had it new tires, I enjoyed excellent MPG and I admit I'm OCD with watching mpg screen enough to know my daily habits.
With this new tires and all tires are set 41PSI....I still get POOR mpg with no changes! I almost never reach 50mpg on any trips! Before new tires: My AM commute to work....always 53 to 56mpg, my PM commute to home, 52 or so.New tires: My AM commute to work....barely 43 mpg! maybe 45!, my PM almost never reach 40!
What gives! I e-mailed Toyota service dept, they said did I lose wheel cover? (WTF? It's the same cover I still have it!) then he said, they need to check into it for $150. No way I'm paying $150! that's like another tire! Ugh! What may be the cause? I purchased Mechilen Fuel Savers with LRR tires as recommended. I feel sick to my stomach every time I see piss-poor mpg. I've been driving with this new tires little over 1,000 miles already including 1 day trip to southern California (that trip, 37mpg and 41 back, where the same trips I took before always 54 average depending on the weather and wind directions)
Prius (Gen 2) :: Poor Gas Mileage And Transmission Not Going To High Gear?
My 08 has been getting poor mileage for the past 3 weeks or so ..... I tried a "push the power button and trip reset shift to reverse to eliminate the backup beep" mod and it did not work. However I find now that I cannot get my MPG average above 42. When I tried the mod the odometer went immediately to all bars and then the bar indicators went out one by one until the regular odometer reading came on .... I'm wondering if doing that also set the car into another "mode" where the tranny will not shift to a higher gear???? So symptoms are constant engine running when cruising to a stop and after 20-30 seconds the motor will shut off .... and while driving on the highway the engine will pick up at least 1000 - 1500 rpms just by adjusting the accelerator a smudge .....
View 19 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Engine Straining / Lost Power And Poor MPG
Basically, about 3 weeks ago I noticed some problems with my 04 Prius. It has 72k miles on the clock. The exhaust was making a farting sound. I have since diagnosed this as a hole in the back box which I promptly replaced. But the real problem is the power.
When driving in electric mode, the car runs as normal. But when I press down on the gas just a little more to the point where the ICE kicks in, it doesn't give as much power as it used to. For example, in electric mode, cruising at 30mph and achieving 99.9mpg, I'd press the pedal down about half an inch. Where this used to kick the ICE in and show 60mpg+ (with the engine charging the battery and providing power to the wheels), it now shows about 30mpg. When I press the pedal a further half inch, it would normally show 35-45mpg, but now reads 16-25mpg. And when its fully depressed, it used to show 12-16mpg but now barely hits double figures and averages about 6.7mpg. Even on highways when I've achieved 60mph and gently ease off the pedal to maintain speed or really slowly increase, I used to achieve 60-70mpg but now I'd be lucky if it makes it to 40.
I also noticed that it produces considerably less pulling power than it used to. Almost as if the engine is really struggling, even when gently pressing the pedal and accelerating from 30mph upwards. This is having a large effect on my overall fuel consumption. I get so scared that I'm wasting too much fuel that I drive really conservatively now.
Prius (2004-09) :: Poor Fuel Fills And Bladder Burping
New thread so this info can actually be found. Like most of you, I was irritated and embarrassed the first time I tried to top off my tank at a busy station, then had a quart of fuel pour back out onto the ground before I could get the cap back on. I did a simple fix that worked forever after. I always get a full fill, never have fuel burp.
View 1 RepliesPrius (Gen 2) :: 2006 - Intermittent Poor Engine Power / Car Struggling To Maintain 68 Mph
Our 2006 Prius (175,000 miles) has recently suffered intermittent periods of diminished ICE power. For instance, for about 1 hour recently driving a hilly section of I-81 through eastern TN, the car was struggling to maintain 68 mph and the HV battery stayed mostly drained at 1-3 bars. Gas mileage was falling, but no misfire. After stopping at a rest area, it was fine. No OBD codes and ICE seems OK otherwise. Experienced a similar reduction in ICE power a few days later. Dealer has no clue. Similar experience I've had with another car was when it's catalytic converter became plugged, but that was not intermittent.

New 2012 GX 460 in 01/2012. While GX is coasting between 55 mph and 70 mph, noticeable "whine" from vehicle. (Sounds like the whine from snow tires, but that happens all of the time in a previous vehicle.) Noise disappears when the accelerator is engaged. Been like this from day #1 and now at 10k miles. Dealer seems perplexed; has said at delivery and at 5k service that it is the tires. Bridgestone dealer says "not our tires."

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start Car (reproduceable with A/C on & off)
2) Wait for wind-up whine (starts out low, then speeds up, then stops) -
I attached MP3 and Wav files in .zip attached so you can hear the noise - recorded on my phone). posted on Youtube ....
Listen to first six seconds. My sound file has the noise for a slightly longer period.
My car started doing this about a week after purchase. It's been consistently doing this every morning. In high elevation, colder climate the sound is louder and longer. Car's been to service 4 times. Service Trip summary:
1) Returned as cannot reproduce
2) Replaced Starter (even though sound happens After start)
3) Replace belt tensioner
4) Service stop, tech said he would contact his rep - rep said no fix "it's normal- related to component in timing chain". (Huh?)
Service tech said he's heard a few of the 2012 Elantra's with this noise.

Our 2010 Prius just had the brake booster recall done and I also installed new pads and rotors. The car now has issues with the front brakes dragging excessively causing lack of power and poor fuel economy. There are no codes and everything else checks out okay, the brakes function fine. Is there anything on these cars that would cause brake drag after a new brake install? I just want to ensure there isn't something I can do before I bring it to the Toyota dealer.

I recently purchased a 2011 Hyundai Elantra GL 4 Door. I am noticing a horrible but hard to define noise. It is like a whine (like power steering pump) but not because there is electric power steering on this car, it also is kind of a mechanical grind - can't really define the sound I will try to record and post later. Any way... the sound occurs when accelerating, the harder the acceleration the worse the sound.
View 6 RepliesCorolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: 2010 LE Faint Gear Whine Coming From Transmission At Around 60 Mph
I recently purchased a new 2010 Toyota Corolla LE auto and I really like it. I have about 2000 miles on it now and just recently noticed a faint gear whine coming from the transmission at around 60 mph. You can only hear it when the radio is off and you really listen for it during the acceleration. It only does it when transmission fluid is fully warmed up after driving for about 15 miles. 2010 corolla uses U341E transmission that specifies Toyota WS transmission fluid. I noticed that 2001 - 2005 Supra uses the same transmission but it requires T-IV fluid which has more viscosity than WS. Noticed this faint gear whine on this car or do I need to take it to the dealer? My other car 2003 Toyota Echo uses U340E transmission and it has gear whine as well, except it is more pronounced than in Corolla, so I an trying to figure out if this is normal for this transmission or not.

First warm week of the year now my 2014 is blowing hot air! I played with all the appropriate buttons. Air on, air off, tried voice commands and no luck. From what I have read is could be the pressure switch or the compressor. The compressor is definitely not engaging and at 17,500 miles I would think there was still freon in it. I have not done a system diagnosis yet..not sure how.
