Prius (2004-09) :: Clucking Noise From Near Front Driver Side Wheel - Replace Wheel Bearings?
My 2005 Prius has 95k miles on it. I've been hearing a cluck-cluck-cluck noise from near the front driver side wheel. I had an independent mechanic test drive it, who said the wheel bearing needs replacement. Should I have it checked out by a Toyota dealer? They're so much more expensive, but are is it worth taking it to them?

Between about 20-30mph, on light throttle the engine/transmission of my 2006 RX400h makes a low groaning sound, sending a vibration through to the cabin. The engine just seems to be very rough at this speeds, like the engine is labouring. After exactly 30mph, everything is very smooth. It is also very smooth when running in EV mode at any speed.
The harshness/vibration only comes on when accelerating, so have ruled out tyres etc. The mileage is 85,000, and it has had a recent major service at a Lexus dealer. I use premium fuel.
The Lexus dealer had a look at the car for 1 hour and inspected the exhaust, engine mountings etc. but could find no faults. I went on a test drive with the service technician and he did notice the vibration.
Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Rough Engine Idle?
My 2007 prius has been idling very roughly recently. It seems to be every time the petrol engine kicks in when the main battery is low and charging. A few weeks back, the malfunction indicator light came on and i took it to the dealer. They said my spark plugs had a lot of carbon build up on them so they cleaned them up and put them back in. Also it was missfiring from time to time. The light went away but it is still idling rough if not rougher then before they cleaned the spark plugs. Its not just like that in the morning. Even if my car has been sitting in 40 degree celsius heat all day it still idles like that. They recommended I use better quallity fuel. I used to use E10 but when I was doing long drives, i filled up with normal unleded. I havent used E10 since then. It never had the rough idle problem when I was using E10 so I am curious to think my car may not like normal unleded. The fuel quality here in Brisbane Australia isnt known for its poor quallity. I'm not sure what to do next. People have recommeded for me to use Wynns Spitfire fuel treatment to keep the spark plugs and injectors clean.
View 5 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Engine Will Not Stop Idling And Idles Rough
Just picked up my 2004 Prius from the Toyota dealer body shop. The driver's side was scraped by someone who wanted to be in my lane. Fortunately, we were only going 35 mph. The rear door skin had to be replaced, and most of the side had to be prepped and painted. There are a few silly mistakes: they forgot to replace the driver's door plug, forgot to replace a lower clip, and smudged a tiny area new paint on the bumper. I brought that to their attention and they are going to take care of it... they have to order the plug and clip.
However, as soon as that conversation was complete, it was time for them to close shop. I sat in my Prius, started it, and the check engine light was on. Wasn't on when I dropped it off for the repairs. Also, on the way home, I noticed the engine wasn't turning off when I came to a complete stop (even though the animation says it was off). At idle, the engine is also rough. Looked at the charge bars, and well, there were only two bars showing.
I thought perhaps, though it's not done this before without the animation screen showing it, the engine was on merely to recharge the traction battery. On the way home, the traction battery returned to full charge (green), but the engine still was not turning off when the vehicle was at a complete stop... not was it turning off when coasting... and when arriving home, even with the car in park... and still idling rough. All the while, the animation on the screen is indicating the engine should be off.
When I replaced the traction battery three years ago, I also replaced the 12v with an yellow top Optima. I wouldn't think the Optima is already going bad. I also do not believe in coincidence. I wonder if perhaps some bad fumes have tainted the MAF, or who knows.

View 3 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Engine Running Very Rough And CEL Flashing
We have a 2005 Prius with 77,400 miles on it. My wife came home from a short trip yesterday saying the engine was shaking the car and the CEL was flashing. About 4 months ago we also had the CEL come on but not flash and it ran a bit rough but not as bad as it is now. I was told by our local dealer that a flashing light is worse than if the light comes on and stays on. When this happened 4 months ago at 74,000 miles the dealer said they downloaded codes P300, 303, and 304 and that I needed to replace all 4 fuel injectors.
I realize that 300 is a general misfire code and 303 is a misfire code for cylinder 3 and 304 is for cylinder 4. After reading some advice on here 4 months ago, I cleaned my MAF sensor, ran some fuel injector cleaner through a tank of fuel, replaced all 4 spark plugs, and started buying Chevron gas. The CEL stayed off and our mileage went back to normal. I thought I had solved the problem but now this after 3000+ miles. I checked all the ingitors, connections, spark plugs, and wires yesterday and all seem to be in good condition. Maybe they were right and the fuel injectors are going bad. I am at a loss as what else to do other than take it back to the dealer now and plan do that this afternoon.
Prius (2004-09) :: Loud Bangs Under The Hood - Rough Engine Shut Down
Yesterday afternoon after warming up (car still in park) the engine shut down was very rough. I heard a quick string of maybe 5 or 8 loud bangs under the hood. Sounds like something got loose and banging inside the engine compartment and ready to fall off at any moment. This morning it was just a bit rough but not nearly as scary. Other than that the car seems to work fine.
View 1 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Rough Idling After Warm Start - Car Vibrate And Engine Struggling
I changed timing belt and water pump DIY back in Oct 2015. Ever since then, I get rough idling (car kind of vibrate and engine kind of struggling) after warm start (no problem with cold starts, it did stall once after the warm start).
Two days ago, I got a P0000 code, I thought it was due to low oil (happened before, I topped off oil 2500 miles ago), so I changed oil and filter. No problem yesterday, but today on my way to work. I got the p0000 code again.
Prius (2004-09) :: Humming Sound When Car Is Coasting With Gas Engine Off
My 2008 Prius had a front quarter panel replaced after my wife back in to a fire hydrant. The body work looks fine , no issue there, but now when the car is coasting with the gas engine off you can hear a humming sound that was not there before the repair. Also it does,nt seem to be recharging the hybrid battery at the same rate.My thought is maybe the body shop caused some damage to MG1 by spinning the front tires on a emision testing machine or rollers.Does special precautions would have to be used when testing wheel clearances after a quarter panel replacement on a hybrid? Would a body shop need to do this ?
View 2 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Sound Is Coming From The Engine Compartment
First off it's a 2008 Prius with 80K on it.
There is a new sound that has started coming from the front of the car in the engine compartment or even lower. It is a turning turbine like sound that is mostly obvious when driving at 60 mph, but my guess is that it is always there, but not as audible at lower speeds. The air and heater are both off and have no effect on this sound. The only thing that could have had anything to do with it is that a day or two before, the tires were low so I filled them to 40 psi. The other thing is that it clicked over to 80K the last week and the friendly red maintenance required light came on.
Prius (2004-09) :: Clicking Sound From Engine After Oil Change
I heard a light clicking noise at about 368-400 beats per minute coming from the engine during acceleration. It was hard to pinpoint and see if it went away since I use the engine so infrequently with pulse and glide, but it was definitely there. I believe it went away by the end of the trip, but was present closer to startup each time I drove today. I'll be able to confirm that tomorrow evening after driving more. It seemed to come from the front right of the engine compartment, i.e. from the ICE. It was not present during EV acceleration, glides, braking, or anything else besides ICE on pulse.
Background:
I just changed the oil this past weekend for the first time since buying the car. It was also my first oil change by myself ever, and I'm thus most suspicious of myself. So go ahead and ask the questions that you might feel would be too "stupid" for most people, I don't mind! I do feel confident I did everything right, a friend had shown me before, and I followed directions from PriusChat as well - but you never know.
I used a Toyota filter (90915-YZZF2) and Napa 5w-30 oil, non-synthetic, which I assumed was what the dealer had been using all those years (2007 model year, btw). I checked the dipstick after driving it the other day and the oil came up to just below the top dot as I wanted.
Mileage doesn't seem to be affected, last few days since the change probably low to mid 60 mpgs average over 150 miles. Perhaps this is something that comes up and "goes away" after some more miles?

My 2008 Prius has started making a noticeable soft whirring sound whenever the engine is running. You can hear it both inside and outside of the car. The sound lasts exactly 30 seconds, then pauses for 4 seconds, than repeats . When the car is turned off, the sound can be heard for about another 10 minutes before it shuts off entirely.

Prius (2004-09) :: Continuous Whirling Or Humming Sound When Engine Starts - Possible Bad Transmission?
My wife's 2006 Prius is having some problems. The car has 187,000 miles on it. When the engine starts it makes a continuous whirling or humming sound. WHen I try to drive it has minimal power and can not be driven above 15-20 mph on my street. I bought an inexpensive Actron code reader and got the following codes. P0A92 P0300 P0303 P0304 P3191. Does it sound like a definite transmission problem and those other codes are caused by the transmission problem.
View 13 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Intermittent Buzzing Sound From Engine Bay - Bad Coolant Flow Control Valve
For several months now, my 2007 Prius has been making an intermittent buzzing sound from the engine bay. When I first heard it, I thought I had hit the little lines they cut into the road to let you know you've drifted over the center line - the sound is like that, a low-pitched buzzing noise. Today, the check engine light came on as it was making that noise. I put a code reader on the car and got P1121, a bad coolant flow control valve. Wondering if the sound and the faulty control valve are just coincidental or if the valve might make that noise when it fails? And if not the valve, what the sound might be?

So.. Today coming back from work, I felt clucking sound from front wheel when going from 5-15mph. I even felt that when I had my left foot on the foot rest area. Its appeared during the driving from work to home and check whether if there is any rock or tree branch on tire or wheel but no...
So after 30mins later, went to gym and the the sound was completely gone.. Would it be because of bad wheel bearing or suspension or ball joint issue?
