Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Replacing CV Axles
My friend's 98 turbo 5spd wagon needs new cv joints. Can you drop the axles on this model without dropping the control arms? I can do it in the earlier cars, but it's tight. I'm assuming you can't in the B5.

Passat (B5) :: Transmission Slipping - Oil Change Gone Wrong
Alright so yesterday I changed the oil for the first time in my 1.8t B5 Passat and when I went to drive it the transmission slips a little. When I was changing the oil filter, I did drop it and oil spilled bellow. I am really confused why the Trans would have a problem. There is plenty of Trans fluid, and It had no problems what so ever before.

View 1 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Clicking Sound From Both Axles?
When I start moving in either direction I get this horrible sound front the axles. I think. They click and just sound bad. I also have some squeaks front the front end too. Tomorrow I am going to take a video and post it on here. The car is lowish, top of tire is even with the fender. Could the axles be binding because they are too long?
View 21 RepliesGolf V R32 :: Oil On Differential Around The Area Where Axles Exit
My rear differential has an oily film around the area where the axles exit the differential. The oil is not dripping, no oil puddles - it is a film of oil with road dirt stuck to it. You can wipe your finger on it and it looks like black grease on your finger. Is this film normal? The dealership says it's normal. I say it should be dry.
By the way, 10,000 miles ago I had a similar symptom and the same dealer (different technician, advisor and service manager) relaced the axle seals under warranty. The new guys say VW will only replace the seals if it is dripping. It was not dripping the last time they fixed it. Now they say they cannot support a repair. Car still has drivetrain warranty.
Two weeks ago I changed my own oil as part of the 40K service. I told them that I saw the weeping axles at that time.
Golf IV R32 :: Idle Vibration After New Axles Installed
I just had both axle's replaced. Looked for OEM but couldn't find availability so I went with FAQ. Just had a local shop do the work. When I got my car back I've noticed that at idle I can feel some vibration. The noise is really subtle but if I rest my foot on the pedals I can feel it through the pedal. I'd describe it as a revolving sound, almost like it's coming from moving parts, although I'm at idle.

View 14 RepliesLexus ES 2007-12 :: Oil And Grease Leaked / Running Down Over Axles
I was underneath my car yesterday (09 ES 350, 60k miles) doing an oil change and noticed oil and grease caked to the back of each side of the firewall and running down over the axles. I also found a small pool of transmission fluid in the splash pan beneath the transmission fluid cooler. It appears fluid is escaping past the factory "pinch clamps." .
I plan to replace the pinch clamps with the screw/bolt style adjustable ones. My thoughts are that maybe the WS ATF is too viscous for these pinch clamps, or that maybe under heavy load there's too much pressure for them to withstand leaking/seeping. I'm estimating I may have lost up to 1/3 of a quart up to this point, but can't be for sure. I thought it might be engine oil, but found the back of the engine to be dry and my VVTI return line is metal and not leaking. I'll definitely be checking the fluid level soon, although the car is running and shifting fine.

Golf IV R32 :: Rattling / Clunking Noises From Front Axles
Posted a while back about a rattling/clunking noise coming from my front suspension. Since my car had nearly 100k miles on it and was still all stock, I went through and replaced ever single part of the front suspension. (Control arms, ball joints, got some Koni coil overs, strut mounts, sway bar end links, swar bar bushings). Turns out the noise wasn't actually related to the suspension. I've got massive play in both of my front axles. They make horrible rattling/clunking noises going over any sort of bump, even the REALLY small ones.

View 14 RepliesCavalier :: 2002 Sunfire / Growling Noises From Transmission / Axles?
Brief history: Took possession two days ago - wife's car (we've separated). In December she put the car in a ditch during a snowstorm. The car has been driven less than 100 miles since that happened. She said that she thought she'd damaged something, since it made a strange sound when driving. I figure it would make a good work transportation vehicle.
I jacked it up today to have a look and there was some plastic splash guards on the pass. side which were damaged and rubbing on the tire. I thought! Removed them and still had the noise.
It appears that the pass. front wheel took the brunt of the impact (broken splash guard and the wheel cover was cracked). I thought maybe the wheel bearing/hub may be bad, but after checking it out (pulling top to bottom, side to side), it didn't seem too bad. I checked at the point where the axle enters the transmission and there is a bit of play when pushing up on the axle. I could also hear a click inside the transmission while doing so, like a gear hitting into another.
It also looks as if the axle is pulled out about a 1/4 inch or so from the transmission seal, as the metal is shiny and not rusted as if it had been this way for a long time. ( I have pics of this but no site to host them).
my question is this - could it be the differential bearing (hope not, don't feel like cracking tranny apart)? Should I attempt to try and whack the axle back in that 1/4 inch? Has ever heard of an axle pulling out of the tranny after an accident?
Lexus GX 2004-09 :: GX470 Air Suspension Often Deflates To Axles And Stays There
I have a 2003 GX 470, the air suspension often deflates to axles and stays there. Ride is unbearable, I removed the rear height sensors and used an ohmeter to test them and they seem to be working fine (ohms change as I move the pivot arm, goes from 423 ohms to 3.3 K full stroke on both sensors) It will deflate to axles and there are no flashing lights and the manual height switch doesn't do anything when I push it, it just stays in N. Every few days the suspension will start working and air up and ride fine. What else could it be besides sensors or is it the sensors even though they seem to be working fine. Could it be an adjustment on sensors. Where is the height control exhaust valve located? Once it airs up to normal can I just disconnect the exhaust valve so it cant deflate?
