Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Interior Light Would Not Come On
I have a 1998 B5 passat when I purchased the car everything was fine shortly after the interior lights would not come on,but the lighting outside was fine. I immediately thought it was the switch so I purchased a new one from ECS tuning right out of the box same problem,but I discovered if wiggle the switch sometime it would come on. Thinking it was a short in the switch I purchased a switch directly from VW at almost four times the cost and right out of the box same issue.

98 passat 1.8t has the abs light on and the exclamation point. Scanned it using vad. Nothing showed up in the scan. Also turbo whistles under load. And trans slips. Nothing showing up on vad.

i just installed a electronic boost gauge in my 98 passat. I wired it to the headlight switch but now when i turn on my car.. about 10 seconds later the ABS light comes on and the brake light flashes. Why this is happening?

Lets start at the beginning. About two weeks ago my girlfriend got a check engine light and the car started missing( 98 Passat 1.8T, 5 speed). Checked obvious things like fuel delivery-good. Pulled coil packs and had no spark on #2 cyl. Investigated more and found one of the pins on the ign. control module was shorted. Felt pretty sure that was the problem since everything else checked out. Ordered a Huco installed it and that fixed the problem except the car seemed slow reprogramming to the new part. I disconnected the battery to clear the memory and that seemed to do the trick.
About 2 weeks later my GF is coming home and fortunately it died in front of the apartment. Checked everything again. Getting fuel, no wires shorted on ign. or fuel harness plus they all get power just no signal when checking with an LED tester. Ign. module was good also. Checked speed sensor for resistance per the book it was good. Tried a new Camshaft Pos. Sensor hoping that was the problem, no luck. I believe it must be the computer. I'm trying to get one from a salvage yard. I don't know if the old computer can be reprogrammed or not. Also was wondering if the dealer(where I really do not want to go) can test the computer somehow and tell me if it is bad or not(don't know if I would trust them anyway), just wanted to include that option.
Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Rear Brake Light Bulb Not Working?
Looking for a diagram of how the rear bulb set should be filled on a 98 Passat Estate. ie: with what bulb types go where. etc.
I have big problems with my brake lights not working when the lights are turned on, then when I change bulbs about, they work but the rear lights do not come on etc, or one side does. All bulbs work, but not as they should together. I know I have a right mess of bulbs in the wrong place. The car is just new to me so trying to sort. I also have one empty bulb set on the outer side of each bulb holder unit and so wonder what this is for and if it is used.

Ford - Explorer :: 1998 - Brake Light Is On / CEL Code P0743 / OD Light Flashes Constantly
My girlfriend just bought a 98 XLT AWD 4.0. does have a few problems.
First, the brake light is on (on the dash). all the lines are good, but the front pads need to be changed. if i take off hard, the brake light goes out for a bit.
Second, had a CEL. P0743, torque converter clutch circuit blah blah. also, the o/d light flashes constantly.
The trans shifts fine, even under WOT. also goes into o/d with no problems, and the button works.
Passat (B5) :: 1998 - Car Won't Crank At All
I have a 98 B5 passat 1.8t and the car wont crank at all.
I drove the car fine all day yesterday and when i got home from school at night and tried to start it nothing happened. The car wont crank at all.
When the key is on everything is fine. my radio works lights work power windows everything.. but when i try to start it nothing happens.
Also when i start my car the battery light will stay on and everything will be low volt in the car but as soon as i rev it up the light goes off and everything works properly. I know this is probably another problem but maybe it might have something to do with this!
Passat (B5) :: 1998 VW Engine Won't Start
I just bought a used 1998 VW Passat and everything seemed to be working fine until today. I drove the car up the road to get some food, went inside and not even 30 minutes later came back out to get in my car to go to work and the car wouldn't start. I turn the key and push in the clutch like normal and nothing happens except for the lights inside on the dash come on, but the engine doesn't begin to turn over or anything. The emergency flashers in the dash begin to flash automatically, don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Just curious on what it could be. I checked all fuses I did find some blown ones but I replaced them then the car worked and now it not cranking again. I checked the fuses I found another bad one i replaced it but still not cranking. All lights turn on, radio turns on. The fuses were check engine slots.

Excellent forums. New to this but just picked up a 1998 Passat that had a few problems. Problem I am now looking to solve is water in the cabin. Some of it was getting in through ros door that was jammed shut because the bottom was full of glass and debris blocking the drain holes but there also appears to be some getting in the front. The glove box is a little damp. My guess is that it has something to do with the pollen filter seal that I have read of. Can't find any advise re this or a recall (P9) that is referred to.
Need to then fix the exhaust that is blowing, clean it up and I'll have a solid, reliable car ready for the winter.
Passat (B5) :: 1998 - No Power In The Door
Friend with a 98 passat. the drivers side rear door functions don't work; the power window does not work and the power door lock does not operate in the door. the other 3 doors work fine- power windows and locks. I do not have the bentley for this car so I am working at a disadvantage; where does the power for the door come from? any kind of control box? relay? fuse?

I have a '98 Passat 1.8T with 76k and recently my lights went out behind my AC controls. At least that's what I thought happened. I took it to CarMax, where I bought the car, to have it fixed and they "looked" in the wiring diagram and told me that there are no lights behind that part of the console.

i have a 1998 passat 1.8t and in the past week my car started a slight sputter when i get on the gas and it gradually got worse the car starts up fine and idles perfect i did a compression check all 4 cylinders are exactly 150 psi now the problem just got worse when i go to leave a light or when im cruising down the highway and grt on it it sputters or and like pops or backfires outta the exhaust i just replaced the fuel filter and i still have the problem im stumped
