Passat (B6) :: Deep Ticking Noise Coming From Rear Compartment
For those with Climatronic, you would have probably heard the noise it makes when it's adjusting vents etc on start up....like a deep ticking of sorts. Well, just recently that same type of noise is coming from the rear compartment of the car and only when coming to a stop or sitting at a light.
View 2 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: In Cabin Noise When Accelerating / Deep Metallic Grind Noise But Car Drives Fine?
I've been working on my car for a few weeks now and I've been doing my best to figure out. The source of this sort of 'metallic grinding' that I'm hearing within the cabin. I cant seem to pinpoint where it's coming from within the engine bay with the hood open (maybe due to the magnaflow exhaust diffusing the sound from the outside of my car). I can easily hear noise when I'm inside however with indications its coming from the lower central area of the engine bay. I drive an '04 Volkwagen GTI 1.8T
In the days I've been working on it I've replaced the:
1. Timing Belt (and tensioner pulley/tensioner dampener)
2. Water Pump
3. Serpentine Belt
4. Thermostat (and housing)
5. Clutch disk and flywheel (from a SMF to a LUK DMF clutch)
6. CV Axles (both drivers and passengers)
7. Clutch Cylinder Slave
8. Wheel Bearings (front left and right)
9. Rotors (Front Left and Right)
Diagnosis**
The car starts without any problems just as it use to prior to the replacements done. BUT it's once I get the car moving where I begin accelerating I start to hear a dull grinding noise/rumble that becomes more and more apparent the faster I go. It seems the sound is directly correspondent to wheel movement upon accelerating. Nevertheless I could be wrong.
I had a friend tag along to diagnose the sound and to him it sounded similar to the "tunneling of air not being properly sealed" but to me it sounds like a metallic grind. My friend also mentioned that he felt it was louder towards the passenger side in contrast to the drivers. As mentioned before the sound is reproduced anytime wheel movement occurs. I've checked torque spec for every replacement job done to the car so there are no loose bolts/nuts/brackets. (but there are exceptions, which I will get to).
Knowing that I've replaced both of the wheel bearings (and hub assembly) I can only assume the sources isn't from there. But I do admit a few mistakes while I had the car on jacks.
1. During the timing belt replacement I thought I would need to remove the exhaust (because I felt it would interfere with the lowering of the engine) so I, (without success), tried to remove the connection between the "bend of the exhaust" to the manifold which were 4 'turbo studs'. I had the worst time with the removal of studs but I was able to impact one them off, and as I tried another the strength of the impact broke one them half way through (meaning that I was able to unthread it a few threads but it snapped in the process, so I would need to somehow drill it out in order to replace it). This is where I gave up and did my best to install the one I had removed. Which I could only get threaded half of the way in.
-All in all I have 1 broken stud that still making a connection, and 1 protruding stud out of the 4 that connects the exhaust to the manifold.
Question: Can this be the cause of the sound? Without the full connection of 4 studs bolting exhaust to the manifold? Can this be the sound That my friend was referring to as the "tunneling air not being properly sealed"?
2. The second "mistake" isn't necessarily a mistake but a fault I found later that has to do with the Passenger CV Axle. I read a few forums here and read that it could be a problem with the axles, so I put the front end on jacks once again and found that there was a bit of movement of play on the axle shaft itself. In detail, the 2 connection points for the axle both at the Output differential flange and Hub assembly are secure and torqued to spec without any loose bolts.
BUT the rod itself seems to shift about a 1/2" between these two connecting points.
Question: Could THIS be the problem? With this type of 1/2" shift in the rod is it possible it can recreate the dull metallic grinding I'm hearing so much?
Lexus LS 2007+ :: Deep Vibration Coming From Rear Of LS460l
I just purchased a 2009 LS460l and noticed a really deep vibration coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vibrations occur when I am at a complete stop and attempt to accelerate the vehicle turning to the left or right. Initially, I thought the tires were rubbing (18inch wheels), but after taking it to my local Lexus dealership they seemed confident the vibrations were occurring because my center differential needed to be flushed a refilled with 3 quarts of new fluid (they claimed the fluid was filthy) which is ~$150/quart. The car has brand new tires and all of which were just balanced/aligned.
View 4 RepliesPrius (2004-09) :: Reverberating Sound Can Be Heard While Closing Driver Door
When I shut my driver's door there is a reverberating sound similar to a spring being stretched and then plucked. It closes fine, the window works, and all the functions of the door work. It closes tight. It just has this hollow spring sound right after I close the door. None of the other doors make this sound.
I was at the local Toyota Dealer today for work on the prius (check my other thread about that trip) and I found a gen II prius unlocked... so I got in and closed the door and no spring sound. It sounded just like my other 3 doors... so something must be up with my door. My car is a 2006 Prius with JBL package.
Golf IV R32 :: Inconsistent Deep Hum / Drone For A Few Moments
Everyone month or so, for a few seconds at highway speeds I will get a hum/drone that is very loud. Its not consistent on when, or where I am driving as it has happened 3 or 4 times in different areas but all on the highway and between 60-80mph.
It lasts a few seconds and increased/decreases with speed but tapping the brakes does not affect it. Even changing speed or switch gears does not fix the issue, but eventually if I drop below 60ish mph then speed back up, it will go away, but even that is inconsistent and I may have to do it twice or more for the drone/hum to go away.
I would think it would be a weird position the wheel bearing gets into, but all the wheel bearings up front have both between replaced in the last 10 months. It does not sound like its coming from the rear.
Summary:
-Tapping the brake doesn't stop the noise
-Changing speed makes it louder or quieter and eventually when slowing down significantly it goes away
-Changing gears at speed does not affect it
-Inconsistent - once a month at most
-Only lasts a few moments
-Only at speeds 60+
Golf IV R32 :: Deep Growl Of Stock Exhaust?
I was running errands yesterday, left the car for an hour, then got back in and noticed that the deep rumble of the exhaust that I love was suddenly gone. The car seemed fine when driving, but the wookie growl only showed up for a few moments. No CEL. What could be causing this?

I have a weird noise from my 2007 Prius. It seems to be coming from the front left of the car. The car drives well, Tracks, feels stable at all speeds. It's just making a crazy noise at almost all speeds, it starts around 10 mph. It's a very DEEP ggggrrrrrrrrrrr. When the car is shifted in N it continues.
View 15 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: Rubbing Sound / Deep Squeaking From Strut Mounts
So everything is tight and aligned and all good, but I'm getting this deep squeaking rub noise coming from my front upper strut mounts, but all the bolts are tight, yet it looks like the metal ring inside the strut tower moves a little up and down when you rock the car a bit. And I can feel the rubbing vibration and movement of the mount when I put my hand on/in the strut tower while the car is rocked.
View 1 RepliesSubaru - Outback :: 2002 - Car Started Making Deep Squeak Noise
I have a 2002 Subaru Outback that recently started making an odd noise. This noise is somewhat hard to describe, but sort of sounds like "urrh ah urrh ah" almost like a rubbing noise or a deep squeak (not high pitched). This noise only occurs when I'm braking, starts when I'm slowing down (going below 20 mph) and becomes more pronounced as I reach a full stop. The noise starts out fast (urr ah urr ah urr ah) and slows down as the car slows down (and gets louder as I come to a complete stop. It is more pronounced when I'm braking going down a hill (louder than when I'm stopping on a flat surface). It does NOT do it when I'm braking in reverse, or when I'm braking going up a hill. You also cannot hear the noise outside the car- only inside the cabin.
View 8 RepliesGolf/GTI VI :: 2012 - Loud Deep Bass Thump Sound When Decelerating
On the way to work this morning in stop-and-go traffic, I noticed a new, weird noise from my week-old 2012 GTI with less than 500 miles on it.
The noise happens when letting of the gas in gear. Doesn't matter what gear you're in or what the engine speed is. Around a second after getting of the gas, there is a loud, depp bass thump, almost like a subwoofer hit from a close-by car. That's what I originally thought it was, but later determined it's something from my car.
What it could be? An exhaust noise? Something hitting? Is this a common noise on the new GTIs?
Golf IV R32 :: Noise Coming From The Rear Of Car
I've had a funny noise from the rear of my car for quite a while now. It's a snap/crack sound that comes when the car is twisted along its length, like something is releasing tension or something. For not quite as long a while, I've been convinced that it's a matter of re-used stretch bolts (I'm not the one who re-used them though) on the both ends of the shocks back there.
I hear this sound (sometimes I can feel it as well) when I angle out of my driveway, which slopes down into the street beyond. Must angle out to avoid scraping the nose, and must TURN into the street anyway. Maybe under those conditions something shifts a bit. I have a UNIbrace; I know that's not got anything to do with it (I had it out for a bit to test).
Have new upper and lower rear damper bolts on hand. but probably worth it even if this makes no change. (Rule out the easy, inexpensive things first, they always say). My Bentley notes "spring must be removed before removing shock." I'm sure this is because the springs keep pressure on everything nearby and we don't want to release that suddenly by yanking the shock out. Or trying to.
If I have the rear of the car on stands and aim to do one side at a time, I can place the pad of my floor jack underneath the trailing arm back there, jack just a little to sort of "hold" the pressure on everything and remove/replace the bolts easily.
Golf VI R :: Whining Noise From Rear Of Vehicle Came And Went
Just today I started hearing a whining noise from the rear that came and went. I wouldn't be worried but it was so loud that the radio could not drowned it out anymore. The noise when away when I gave the car some throttle so I am thinking its the rear diff. It was pouring down rain and I wonder if there was some part of that that could have had an affect.

View 4 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: Humming Noise Coming From The Right Rear Of Car
There is a humming noise coming from the right rear of my R, I'm going to guess that it is the furl pump running? If not I don't know what it could be, or if usually that loud...
Second, I was thinking of getting adjustable rear control arms. I was going to get just one set, to adjust the camber to 0.0 instead of the -1 or so that they usually ride.
Third, I was also contemplating getting upgraded motor, trans, and dogbone mount. I was told it would cut down on transmission noise while letting off the gas pedal whence driving.
Golf V R32 :: Metal Grinding Noise In Rear
For the last week or so been noticing as I'm slowing down, brake or no brake, a metallic, grinding noise coming from the rear passenger side. Does not sound like a humming worn wheel bearing noise. Its pretty loud, almost clunky and not always consistant. Then the last day or so have noticed it on the right side. At higher speeds....faintly hear a ticking... The car has 48K on it.
