Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2000 GTI VR6 - Coolant Leak / Smoke And Starts To Overheat When Idling
I have a 2000 vw Gti vr6. It leaks coolant smokes and starts to over heat when idling. Does fine when driving down the road. It has a new radiator. When pressure tested I can see a little stream of coolant coming out. But there's no space in the engine bay and I can't see exactly where it's coming from. Like I said it only happens when it's Idling for an extended period of time. It does fine going down the road.
View 3 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Overheating - Coolant Spraying Everywhere Causing White Smoke Under The Hood
I have a 2002 VW MK4 1.8t. It has 172,000 miles on it. Since i bought the car i have had to add coolant from time to time due to leaks from various plastic coolant parts so I replaced the crappy plastic connectors and flanges as they failed but it has never overheated till a couple days ago. It rose up to about 210'F but I didn't let it get to 260'F (aka the red zone).
While the temperature was up, the coolant was spraying everywhere causing white smoke under the hood. I stopped and looked under the hood and came up with the conclusion it was the coolant flange that holds the temp sensor since it was leaking coolant from the flange like a faucet hince the reason it caused it to overheat due to lost of pressure and no coolant in the system. So I replaced the part and gaskets then checked for other obvious leaks.
No leaks are shown nowhere else in the vehicle. So I added coolant to the car and let the cooling system do its magic as i left the heater on high. Let car idle with cap off and heater on for about 45 minutes. No signs of overheating. So I take the car for a spin and that's when the car starts heating up. I look under the hood and feel hoses and notice all are pressurized but top hose that leads to coolant flange is hot and the bottom hose connected to thermostat is cold.
I checked the return hose that leads up to the coolant reservoir to see if it's cycling and it appears it was. At low rpms the return hose had a steady flow and at high rpms it was flowing much rapidly. Which made me think it wasn't the water pump also this car with that many miles wouldn't have lasted with the plastic impellar this long if it wasn't already swapped out by previous owners. My question is what would cause it to still overheat? I forgot to note the fans did not turn on when the temperature was rising unless i turned the a/c on. But i still did a drive test with a/c on and it still overheated. I also did multiple burp cycles. I have invested alot of money in custom work and suck to leave it parked on the drive way.
Golf - Volkswagen :: 2002 - White Smoke At Highway Speeds
I'm driving my wife's 2002 VW Golf on the highway to build miles (it's at 84k). It's a manual with gearing that's at 3500 rpm at 70 mph in 5th gear, which seems pretty high. It had been doing fine on the highway, even though the RPM seems a bit high due to gearing, but it keeps me under 80 mph (highway is largely 70 mph). It burns oil, but not too bad, like a quart every 500 miles or so.
Recently, when driving at "high" speed (slightly over or near 70 mph), I get a plume of intense white smoke. After slowing down, the plume goes away, and I can continue near 65 mph.
After this happened today, I put on a code reader, and saw of P0159, air fuel ratio oxygen sensor issue. What causes the white plume of smoke, and what to do about it? Seems like the car should have more miles on it.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Coolant Temp Light Came Flashing On - Oil Getting Into Coolant
Okay so recently I was driving my 2000 Jetta and the coolant temp light came flashing on, when I went to check the coolant I was surprised to discover that it was like a mud brown color, almost looks like peanut butter. From everything I have read this can be from a few things, either rust build up that is gunking everything up and oil getting into the coolant somehow. I'm pretty sure its rust build up but I was wondering what everyone thinks about this, I was also not using G12 coolant which I'm told now is the premier brand for VW's.

It might be a bad heater core, but my heater works fine and there is no moisture on my carpet.
Occasionally I'll see traces of steam and smoke enter the car through the vents. I also smell a coolant smell. I was losing coolant very slowly, but the level has been holding.
Now my AC doesn't blow nearly as cold as it once did.

View 5 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: Vibration At Highway Speeds
Driving on the highway the other day and I was doing about 80 and I noticed that the front end started to vibrate pretty loud so I slowed down to around 70 and it stopped. I got home and called up the local tire shop had all my wheels re balanced as I heard that could be the cause they were near perfect. Tires have about 3,000 miles on them. so yesterday I took it out to see if it would do it again and I noticed when it starts to vibrate at about 80 and I push in the clutch it stops immediately. Could my clutch be going out? or possibly like the throw out bearing.
View 10 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 VW Overheating As Soon As Take It On A Highway
My 2002 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T 5-Speed is over heating
Car is still over heating after replacing the following:
- Head gasket
- Coolant fan module
- Geba Metal Prop Water pump
- Full timing belt kit
- coolant fan switch in Radiator
- Bleed the system of all air blow hot air
So Driving the car around town is ok, doesn't over heat, but as soon as I take it on a highway it over heats. I drove it 50 kms out of the city and it over heated, let it cool down and added water. got it back home. Oil light flashed on as I pulled into driveway, turned it off right away. no external oil leaks. Checked coolant, Oil in coolant. also the coolant was boiling, the level was raising up and lowering. I have been reading the forums for a few hours and the oil in the coolant sounds like the oil cooler gasket. Ok so the fans are running and it still over heats. The old metal propeller water pump was very hard to turn so I replaced it with a Geba Metal water pump. no leaks at water pump. Could it be possible that the Oil cooler was causing air to leak into the cooling system causing the coolant to boil? And then when the oil cooler "o-ring" finally failed it dumped oil into the coolant?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Stalled Out On The Highway / Hole Busted In Oil Pan
I currently have a MKIV Golf. The other day i was out and about and i was going through an intersection. It had some deep gutters, or divets, whatever you want to call them to allow water to flow through the intersection. I didn't notice how deep they were until i hit them, being it was night and I didn't think going the speed limit i would even need to worry about that at a busy intersection. Anyways, i hit it, heard it, felt it. Didn't think of it much since it didn't seem that hard of a scrape. Got some food and ended up driving for another ten min.
My oil light came on and i ended up driving a block or 2 to the gas station. I stalled out on the highway right before i got to the gas station and had to try popping my clutch to make it into the parking lot as it was a busy highway. It restarted and i got into the parking lot fine. immediately turned off the engine. After half an hour and multiple dry dipstick checks and 3 quarts of oil on the floor i ended up finding out that there was a bullet size hole in my oil pan.
The only thing is that the fact the engine sounded horrible, but didn't seize up, and i don't know how long the engine was completely dry, should i take it to a shop so that there isn't a possibility that damage has been done to the engine? or should me replacing the oil pan, adding the proper oil and amount be sufficient for the engine to run fine. I don't want to take the chance as I've already been through engine problems with an s13 i had that seized up on me because of other oil issues.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Smoke Coming Out Near The Airbox
I bought this 2003 gti in July, noticed a little smoke coming out near the airbox but the motor had been cleaned recently so I assumed it was whatever they used cleaning it just burning off.
Today, installing an air filter, I see that there is a rubber hose dry rotted with smoke coming from it. I don't know what it goes to or how to replace it. The car drives fine. I do have CEL on for a coolant system fault, but all fluids are level it's not overheating and it doesn't seem to be losing any power.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Smoke Pouring Out Of The Back Of VR6
12v VR6. Have smoke pouring out of the back here. The coolant is really hot but its not smoking from the reservoir. In the second picture you can see a liquid its that brown green stuff. It is fresh and wet not a stain. Also in the third pick there is some of that around the sparkplug wire. Also smells burnt.
The oil in the dipstick isn't milky like a blown headgasket would. However the oil inside the oil cap is a very dark brown. What is it? I'm thinking head gasket but this is my only lead.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Timing Belt Busted When Cruising Down The Highway
2.0L 8v ....So what's my chances the valves stayed clear of the pistons?
Driving 70mph 5the gear and cruise control set. Motor just died and I pulled off.
Cars back home in the garage. Iv ordered the ecs tuning timing belt kit.
This was a belt I installed 50k miles ago, shouldn't have gotten a auto parts store belt, or maybe it was my install, but I deff didn't think the belt was going to fail that early. Is there much of a difference between different brand belts and OEM?
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 05 - Cloud Of Smoke Come Out Upon Cold Start
So I'm trying to figure out the issue with my girls car, upon cold start sometimes a cloud of white smoke will come out of the tail pipe but not all the times, sometimes the oil level slowly drops but again not all the time, coolant doesn't look mixed but I'm not 100% sure. The car is the pzev 2.0.

I own a 03 mk4 jetta 2.0 I revved her up to 5000 rpm coming onto traffic. Drove about a mile or so when I noticed the temp going up. Pulled over and checked all my fluid levels and looked under for any leaks. Got back in the car turned it on and saw temp was normal again. I drove not even a quarter of a mile when I saw smoke coming out the rear of the car. Let the gas pedal go and when I did that the car started downshifting. Its an automatic. When it got down to the last gear the battery, check engine light, and epc light came on and car cut off. Cruised until I could stop somewhere safe on neutral. When I completely stopped I tried cranking but no crank. When I turn the key, lights and everything is good. Just no crank.

View 2 RepliesGolf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 / VR6 - White Smoke / Smells Like Gas
Its a 2001 jetta vr6, 5 speed, electronic seats all leather with wood trim panels, and I am having quite the issue. When you turn on the car it has a rough idle around 600rpm but doesn't die out. it smokes like a banshee, white smoke. if you come back later and start it, no smoke until you give it gas. some times it doesn't smoke at all. misfire cyl 6 and 5, used to have 4 misfires but spark plugs did me justice, maf sensor low voltage output, bank 1 sensor 2 02 something or another, when i first got it, it would just chug and not smoke at all. the better its running, the more smokes it produces it seems. none of my coils have the rubber graumet around them anymore and all seem to be pretty shot regardless. I have no leaks underneath the car, coolant has no oil mixture in it all all, no visible leaks on the headgasket, and most of the time the smoke smells like gas, but its purely white. I am just wondering what could cause it, im trying to feel out more options before getting drunk and doing a headgasket. no oil loss, no coolant loss.
