Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: How To Check For Limited Slip Differential
I am getting ready to do my both differentials and need to know if I have limited slip or not on the rear, what is the best way to tell?
View 5 RepliesFord Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 - Slip In Automatic Transmission
A few weeks ago I noticed what seemed like a "slip" in my automatic transmission. Only happened a couple of times and I thought maybe it was just me imagining it or I didn't have the shift selector lever firmly in "D"rive. Then I went on a 4,000 mile trip pulling about 3,500 lbs. on mostly flat roads but it did include some 7% grades in the hilly parts... the truck performed flawlessly.
This is probably not related but ... after I got home, the truck sat for a few days and then I noticed a coolant puddle under the truck. Traced it down to what appeared to be a slow drip from a bad squeeze clamp on the large, lower rad hose connection. Replaced the squeeze clamp with 2 worm drive clamps and no leaking issue since.
Then last night, the tranny seemed to "slip". My short run across town started out OK. However, when I arrived at my destination, the diesel motor would rev to around 2500 rpm but the truck barely moved forward. It eventually did shift into second but also with high revs. It was the same feeling as if it were a manual tranny and you were giving it lots of throttle but only letting out the clutch a little bit (i.e. riding the clutch). This happened a couple of times last night. Also at a stoplight with the brakes on firmly, the truck was gently and rhythmically "rocking forward" as if the tranny was not fully disengaged.
When I worked through the gears shifting manually, the problem seemed to disappear and the truck responded going through the gears normally. Upon restart about an hour later, tranny shifted fine both in the city and at highways speeds on the way home.
B-I-L commented "sounds like your clutch is slipping". Not exactly sure what he meant as I had to leave. I'm hoping this will be a simple fix/adjustment and not the dreaded mechanical diode failure leading to a replacement tranny. Truck only has about 75,000 miles on it.
I'm suppose to head out on my annual vacation next week carrying a 3,500 lbs. truck camper and pulling a 3,000 lbs. cargo trailer with our gear. Obviously if the truck is sick, this trip can't happen. I know some of you would dive right in and start taking the tranny apart to repair it ... What is wrong with my transmission and what I should be doing next?
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 F250 - Rear End Slip / Bump When Initially Starting From A Dead Stop
I am experiencing what feels like a "bump in the rear" when initially starting from a dead stop. It feels like a car behind me tapped the bumper or that the truck "hunkers down" first, then moves. Tranny seems fine also. Once moving, there is no problem whatsoever. There atre no noises, leaks, or other symptoms. Also, when coming to a stop, it feels the same way just before the truck completely stops. If I drift forward a little, then apply the accelerator, it does not "slip" or hunker down.
Took it to the dealer and they claim that they can't find anything wrong and may just be the suspension releasing? The truck does this whether loaded or not?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: No DEF Warning Until Limited To 50 MPH
So I am having yet another problem with my 2015 f-350 .... We did not receive any warnings that the DEF was empty until MPH was limited.
2 1/2 gallons was added to the tank less than 1,500 miles ago.
Heat problem many have been solved but will not know until winter, see this link [URL] ....
Because of the unreliability and unpredictability of the truck we are now filing for lemon law under NY state law.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Mystery Slip / Low Power During Tow
I've got an issue...
Symptoms:
1. Sudden slip feeling(like you just hit a small patch of black ice while powering up a hill.)
2. Turbo Pressure still spun up.(According to gauge)
3. Backfiring out of the airbox. (Sounds like a flat tire)
4. Lose a bunch of power. (Feels like a car running on 6 out of 8 cylinders)
Only happens at mid-throttle, during a long uphill run while towing. Doesn't happen when not towing or first thing out of gate when engine is cool. No problems going downhill either.
Situation: Towing a 10k pound 5'er, to Yosemite, I would get this random sudden lose of power, that accompanies a series of backfires out of the airbox during a long steady uphill drive.
Truck has 161k miles on it. Fluids are all brand new. I didn't see any smoke coming from the tail pipe, like turbo was done and letting oil into the engine. Oh also, no check engine lights.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Transmission Slip In 1st Gear And Reverse?
Drove the wife to work this morning. The turn off into town there was a lady stuck so I pulled over in the drifts. After putting in back in gear I had to get on it to get out of the drifts. Snow was blowing over the windshield, and I imagine throughout the engine bay.
After that it felt like it stayed in 2/3rd gear. I'd hit the pedal and it would redline and sort of accelerate jumping in and out of gears. So i slowed down to a stop. Accelerated slow and it was ok but when I got more on the pedal it would feel like it was slipping. Once I got in the driveway, she idled for about 15 mins while I shoveled out my spot. Once putting in gear again I had to rev it up for it to move.
Also reverse, had to rev it up to move it.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2000 F250 Transmission Is Starting To Slip Occasionally
I have a new to me 2000 F250 7.3 diesel with automatic. Truck has 185K miles and tranny is starting to slip occasionally. Do these trucks come with a OEM tranny cooler or do I need to add or upgrade the OEM one. Someone also told that there is something called "bulletproofing" the tranny on these trucks. BTW, what would be a reasonable cost to have a two wheel drive auto tranny done on my truck?
View 7 RepliesFord Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2002 - Torque Converter Slip / Stall - No Lock Up
I have a 2002 7.3 with the 4r100 173k miles. If your nice to it she drives fine, but if you get on it the torque converter will slip/stall kinda revs up like 300 rpm then slams really hard between 1st and 2nd. Other gears work fine. I've only had it not happen like 10 times since I've owned the truck ..... I don't really beat on it except for towing which I'm starting to do a lot of. Wondering if putting a new stock torque converter in it is worth it.? Not gona blow the bank on a TC unless I'm putting a brand new trans in the truck. Which I don't think it needs in the near future.
View 14 RepliesFord Transmission :: 1999 2WD - Limited Slip Rear Differential With No Leaks?
I recently changed the rear diff fluid on my 1999 F250 Super Duty (180k) It was due plus I was getting some chattering when making turns from a stop. The Diff fluid had about 60k miles on it and seemed to be a little low even though I don't see any leaks. I paid to have it done last time so I can't say what kind of a job they did.
I used Motorcraft diff fluid and 8oz of friction modifier. Two weeks later and about 500 miles, today I noticed on two occasions when turning a moaning sound coming from the rear of the truck. Could this be a sign of too much friction modifier and the cluthes are slipping or is something else going on?
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Limited Slip In 2WD?
I have a 2wd f150. I want to put in a limited slip diff. I have found a ford racing one that is reasonably priced but all the application guide shows is mustangs. Will it work in my truck provided the size and number of splines is correct? I also found an AAM diff...
View 4 RepliesFord Excursion :: Limited Slip - While Shifting Vibrates?
The X has 107K on the clock. I have a 6 quart after market aluminum diff cover installed with Royal Purple 75W-140 synthetic gear oil and no limited slip additive in the gear oil. When I make a left or right turn, I get this vibration like the limited slip clutch pack is engaging then disengaging. It is not a thump or thud but just a subtle vibration. I don't hear any noise but I just feel the vibration. It happens either going forward or backing during a turn and is more noticeable when pulling a load and turning. Going straight down the road I hear no noise and feel no vibration. I thought I would ask before I pulled the diff cover off.
View 5 RepliesFord F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Rear Gear Swapping With Limited Slip
Ok so I was going to just swap the whole rear end from drum to disk but it looked to be too much difficult;t. So the rear I have has 278,000 miles in it and its starting to make noise we were thinking about swapping the gear from the disk to the drum because the disk rear has 140,000 miles on it. Both have a limited slip. And 3.55 gears but i was thinking about getting 3.73.... So my question is can I swap in 3.73 gears into a rear end with the limited slip from one with 3.55 gears? Or do I need to buy a different limited slip?
View 7 RepliesFord F-150 (2004-2008) :: Limited Slip Shudder During Acceleration On Turning
I picked up a 2004 F150 a few weeks ago. It has the limited slip 3.73 rear end. During acceleration on turning, I'm feeling quite a bit of chatter out of the rear end. I've read the TSB on it, and I'm wondering how much it'll cost to get the clutchpacks replaced in the rear differential.

View 7 RepliesFord Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 - Can't Get F350 Out From 4X4 Low?
I went out getting firewood in my 2001 F350 4X4 6.8l V10 auto . Backed up to the slash pile, put the truck in 4X4 Low and went to work.
When we finished I flipped the switch to 2WD, but the transfer case would not dis-engage and the IDIOT LIGHT on the dashboard stays on 4X4 Low... I can't get the truck out of 4X4 Low. I turned the hubs from auto to lockand its still stuck in low range.
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 - Won't Fill Up With Gas?
so long story short a few weeks ago my truck would start clicking the pump. Every 3 seconds it will click and stop. Tried different pumps, upside down, nothing works. Now it won't even go in like something is stuck in the fuel neck and its spitting gas back out. I stuck a wire and it went down pretty far. I see people saying the evap lines but I have no clue where they are.
View 9 RepliesFord Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 F250 - A/C Goes In And Out
Okay, so the truck is a 2001 F-250 Crew-Cab 7.3l PSD with about 300k on the clock. For a while now the A/C would start out okay when you started the truck and it would blow cold for about 10 minutes then it would start to fade away and get hot. Then later it might get cold again. You could turn the A/C off for a minute or so and turn it back on and it would be cold again.
Took it to a shop and they drained the system and recharged it and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Well, it's still doing it. We were starting to thing maybe it was an electrical issue with the cold/hot switch on the dash until a recently noticed a pattern. If it had gone hot and I got heavy on the accelerator (revving above 2500 RPM), it would get cold and keep blowing cold for 3-5 minutes. So the trick to staying cool as of now is just to hammer down every few minutes.
I read the HVAC FAQs, and it seems like the issue maybe with a slipping compressor clutch. Sound right? Also if that's the issue, it says the solution is: Excessive A/C clutch gap due to clutch wear. Usually, the problem can be resolved by removing a shim from the clutch to bring the gap back into the desired .014-.030 gap. What exactly do I have to do? Where and what are these shims?
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 - Gas Tank Won't Fill Up?
I had a new Fuel Pump put in the cheaper plastic one into my 2001 F250 5.4 with a 112,000 miles.
Problem I am having since getting it back is when filling the gas tank up it will shut the pump off at 3/4 tank. I then have to sit there playing the squeezing game to get more gas in. The vent line looks fine no kinks in it and the tank looks level so what could be the issue causing me this headache?
Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 F250 - 4x4 Won't Engage
My truck: 2001 F250 V8 Triton Automatic 4x4
Problem: 4x4 won't engage
Symptoms: No dash lights....nothing happens when I turn the 4x4 switch. When I start the truck I hear what sounds like a motor (transfer case motor maybe?) trying to switch (even though my dash switch is on 2WD)... It tries three times and stops.
What I've done: Checked fuses ...they appear ok to me
I don't have a maintenance manual yet ...
The 4x4 used to work up until about 2 weeks ago. Started having a hard time getting it to go into (and out of) 4x4 and then it just stopped all together.
