Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Howl Going On - Noise From Transfer Case Area

I've got sort of a howl going on, was thinking rear end, but when i jacked up the wheels and spun the driveshaft the noise seemed to come from the transfer case area. I haven't had a chance to check the fluid yet, could it be a bearing in the t-case? Its only when i'm on the gas if i let off its gone. 2001 f150 super crew 4x4

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: A/C On Seems To Cause Engine To Bog Down / Howl / Moan And Growl?

I have had an engine growl / howl problem that seemed to disappear with the cooler weather. However, turning the A/C back on yesterday, the growl/howl re-appeared. Is the A/C compressor bad? A/C clutch bad? Heading out on a long distance trip at the end of the month.

When the moan/ groan comes from the engine bay intake area, I have to back off of the throttle in order to re-accelerate... Gas pedal seems to become dead...

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 F350 - Howl Behind Trans / Noise Starts Around 30 MPH

I just changed u-joints and the carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft. I now have a "howl" somewhere back there. The noise starts around 30mph and goes away around 40mph. There no vibration associated with it. The sound goes away after driving for 15-20 minutes.

I double check all my marks on the driveshaft to make sure I put it in the way it came out. I put it up on jack stands and ran it up to speed but couldn't replicate the sound that way.

The truck is a 2002 F350 7.3ltr DRW.....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Growl Noise In Front End Comes And Goes

Been trying to track down a noise in the front end. Got a growl and what sounds like a big cat scratching its nails on a metal plate. The metal sound comes and goes, but the growl is always present at one level or another. It sounded like it was coming from the driver's side. I jacked the truck and checked everything on that side and it seemed tight. It was all replaced about two years ago. I then started looking around and found the sway bar links were shot along with the bushings. I then jacked up the passenger's side and checked that.

Should have done this first as it was pulling to the right and not the left. The wheel was hard to rotate and stopped rotating as soon as I stopped forcing it. It was making a growling noise, but not nearly as loud as when the truck was rolling down the road. It also had a bit of play that I tracked down to the hub assembly. The ball joints and u-joints were tight with no play at all. The dust seal that should be on the axle was gone and the hub seal looked beat. Tie rod ends all seemed good. Ordering part now. My question is there anything else I should look at?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 4WD - Noise From Front End At 35 - 40 MPH?

I bought my current truck this past December (2002 SCREW Lariat FX4) and recently had my first reason to engage 4WD. I noticed a rumbling noise at speed (35-40mph.) After searching this forum, I checked the heat shield near the front drive shaft, and it is not rubbing. Everything looks to be in good working order. The sound is coming from somewhere in the front driveline, not the transfer case, as it the sound continues after the t-case is switched to 2wd, before the center disconnect disengages.

Checked the front diff fluid and it is topped-off. The drive shaft has some significant surface rust, so it could be the u-joints, but it's a pretty straight shot from the t-case to the front diff, so I don't think the sound is coming from there. Where the noise is coming from? CV joints in the half shafts, perhaps? Truck has 106K miles on it, and is in immaculate condition. I doubt it's ever seen any serious 4WD duty, but it did spend it's first two years in the Detroit area, so it may have seen some winter highway use. My last truck was an '01 4x4, and it was always whisper quiet in 4WD.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Grinding Noise From Front Differential

I have a 2002 f150 5.4 with 3.55 limited slip... For months now every time I hit a bump with the front right side there is a loud bang (sounds like a wore out bushing), and if I am driving slow at an idle you can here a thump every time the wheel goes around. And when I turn all the way it sounds more like a grinding sound.... The noise is getting very bad, what it is. I am very mechanically inclined but cannot figure it out.

Everything in the front end seem tight. When I lay under it if I get someone to spin te wheel the thump sound sounds like its in the front dif, kinda echoes through the front drive shaft but u joints seem good. I really think it's in the dif, and I'm hoping the banging noise I hear when I hit bumps is the same problem as the noise when the wheels go around....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Growl Only At Idle

Ok, so my '02 has dual alt from factory and lately I have noticed a "growl" only at idle. Upon further diagnosis it is coming from the belt. So I replaced the tensioner, upper idler, and belt seeing as how they didn't look in good shape. Still there. I noticed from looking under the truck where the belt comes off the crank to the lower idler there is a lot (2" or so) belt *flutter* (slap/slop) but as soon as you give it any fuel it smooths out and the noise goes away. Let it idle and the noise comes back with the belt slap/flutter. For those with dual alternators, look at your belt from under the truck and see if yours is smooth at idle. Now I do notice it doesn't make the noise for the first few minutes of running. Next I am going to try bypassing the lower alternator and lower idler to try and pinpoint the prob.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Oil Leak Coming From The Passenger Side Front

My '02 F150 just developed an oil leak. It appears to be coming from the passenger side front. I'm just assuming here, but could it more than likely be the timing cover? I'm 150 miles from home and I'm debating on getting the timing cover gasket on my way home tomorrow. Also, if it is the timing cover, what other gaskets should I replace? Pretty sure the water pump oring.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Coolant Leak On Driver Side Front Right Near The Thermostat Housing

I'm trying to figure where the coolant leak is. Appears to originate on the driver's side front, right near the thermostat housing. Since the engine tilts back the entire drivers side is wet. The thermostat gasket appears to be OK, but it does have a lot of miles on it.

If it's not the thermostat then can coolant leak from the cross over tube. And is the cross over removable without taking off the intake. There appears to be a bolt coming up from underneath on the passenger side.

Also, does coolant flow through this plastic intake. If it does, then the leak could be some where else, if not, then it's probably the thermostat.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Front Seats Higher Than Rear - Remove Coil Spacers?

I have an 02 f150 2WD with a "leveling" kit. It was on the truck when I bought it. However, the front sets noticeably higher than the rear. The rear has lifting blocks, while the front has the lifted spindles as well as the coil spring spacers. At least I think they are spacers. I had to replace lower control arm bushings a while back, and there were black plastic rings on top of the springs. Can I remove the spacers? If I can, I plan on doing that and replacing the rear blocks with whatever I need to get the stance back. I like the height of the truck now, just hate the front being higher than the rear. I do pull my boat with it.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Whining Noise While In Reverse

I have a 2002 f150 with the 5.4 motor and a auto transmission and when I go in reverse the rear end makes a loud whining noise? The fluid level is fine. Should I add the gear oil additive to the rear end or change the rear end oil and add that? I am looking to sell the truck so what could cause this noise?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Intermittent Squealing Noise

Over the last few days my f150 has developed a really annoying squeal that's intermittent. I can never really predict when Ill hear it. Usually I first hear it when I am accelerating to a speed greater than 30 or 40 mph. And it will continue if i keep my foot on the gas or if i slowly hit the brakes. Usually the only way it will stop is if I slow down to under roughly 30 or if i hit the brakes. pretty hard.

But sometimes Ill hear it at various speeds just for a second or two, usually when I am turning or when I am decelerating by taking my foot off the gas and not braking. again its hard to predict. It sounds really similar to a car with squeaky brakes. and just like squeaky brakes, you can hear the noise slow down as the f150 slows down. but again it doesnt only happen when i hit the brakes. I dont know what it is.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Loud Squealing Noise Then Pop On Front End

I've had this truck almost 2 yrs now. It is not a 4 x 4. The trouble I am having is on the driver side. What happened first was while I was driving it i heard a loud squealing noise then a loud pop. After that the truck seemed fine I checked under it and everything looked ok. After that I drove it to a couple stores did fine but i heard the loud pop again. Once I left the store I was driving on the highway and it jerked to the left and i heard a grinding/rattling noise. I put my flashers on slowed down and every once in a while it would still pull to the right but the grinding noise remained constant. I parked it waited for a tow and i turned the truck around and drove it up the ramp there was another pop sound but I didn't hear the grinding. It seems to happen on and off. And it doesn't matter if I am turning or going straight.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1999 4X4 XLT - Squeaking Noise In Front

1999 FORD f150 4x4 XLT

When i drive the truck straight, turn left, turn right and even backup i get a Squeaking noise coming from the front and it is loud.

When the truck is in park and i turn the wheel back and fourth it still Squeaks even inches at a time turning it i can hear the Squeaking noise.

I can have the truck shut off and i put my weight on the front bumper making it bounce up and down i can still hear the same Squeaking noise

But when i jacked up the front end and turned the wheel back and fourth the nose is gone and seems to be great.

Sounds like the Squeaking noise is coming from the driver side. What this can be?
