Ford Excursion :: Hiss Or Squeal Sound Like Belt Slipping
The Ex just started making a sound that I can best describe as a hiss or squeal, but not as much of a squeal as the belt were to make if it were slipping. It starts around 1700 rpm and gets louder as the revs increase. The truck also feels maybe a bit down on power but that just could be me not willing to push the gas as it squeals louder when I do. I don't see anything leaking and anything out of the ordinary under the hood. All gauges are normal, turning the a/c on or off doesn't change anything. Nor does the radio. Any clue as to what my problem is? I'm a little worried driving home if it's something potentially serious.

1988 4.0 sohc mountaineer ... So the beast has 188K on it. New belt not that long ago.
I have a squeal after starting it up. I assume a belt tensioner is getting weak.
Or could it be the power steering pump? Power steering feels normal and you can turn the wheels just fine in park.
Subaru - Impreza :: 2005 - Knocking Noise After Timing Belt Change
I have a 2005 Standard 2.5 RS wagon - nice little car.
So with that in mind, I had a local garage (trusted...dealership in this area is notoriously crooked) replace my timing belt, tensioner, idlers, thermostat, and water-pump last week. I've had the car back for about 3 days and I just noticed today, that while the car is idling, I'm hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere (could be while I'm driving too, but maybe I just not hearing it) - I don't recall this sound before bringing it in for the work. When I rev up the engine a bit, it goes away, but when the car sits for a few minutes, it comes back.
I've already had it back in since the change for a defective tensioner, which the garage replaced free of charge. I plan on calling them first thing Monday morning to bring it in so they can have a look, but in the meantime, what this likely to be?
Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2002 3.0L Sounds Like Fan Belt Squeal
After about 1 minute after starting the truck it sounds like the fan belt is squealing..(below 30 deg outside) Only its not the fan belt as I replaced it. Does not do it when it is engine is operating temperature. Have checked all of the Pulleys which seem to be all right. The frequency of the squealing sound is about 1/3 the engine RPM and will go away above 2k when it does do it. Stopping at a stop light after about 45 seconds it really starts to get loud. Can a Fan Clutch do this.. I beleive that this engine has a timing chain right?
View 8 RepliesGolf IV R32 :: 2004 VW Won't Start - Belt Squeal
So for a few days now my 2004 VW R32 started having some belt squeal. It's not my daily driver so I was going to look at it tomorrow when I had some time. Unfortunately my brother took it out of my driveway today to remove some snow and it died at the end of the block.
Anyways he proceeded to attempt to jump it but it still won't start. He said the lights come on so the battery doesn't seemed to be drained.
I was thinking that my belt somehow stopped getting a charge to my alternator or something to that effect. Not sure though. Both the belt and alternator were replaced last year.
He also said it clicks when he turns the key.
Honda - Accord :: 1991 - Belt Continues To Squeal
I drive a 1991 Honda Accord. A few months ago I began to notice that the engine compartment would squeal when I started it on occasion. I went under the hood and determined that both the alternator and steering pump belts could do to be tightened and did just that. That solved the problem.
A few weeks later they begin to squeal again. I apply some belt conditioner and it usually goes away for that particular trip, but the squeal will come back upon the next time I start the car.
I can't tell which belt the squeal is coming from, as they are practically right on top of one another.
Over the past month or so, the squeal has gotten progressively worse. It will squeal at startup until I begin to reach approx 2k RPMs. If I go to idle during driving, it will (maybe 40% of the time) drop down to below 500 RPMs and squeal, and on even fewer occasions the car will sputter and stall out (MAYBE once per day).
The belts appear to have little give now, but I didn't want to OVER tighten them. They also show no apparent signs of wear or glazing. With the winter weather coming, I'm attempting to resolve this as quickly (and cheaply) as possible, so that I'm not banging around under the hood wearing a parka.
Impala - Chevrolet :: 2006 - Belt Squeal When Temperature Is Hot Outside
3.9L V6 Chevrolet Impala driver here. The vehicle has about 83000 miles on it. I've been driving it since 2006 and was purchased used. The belt is starting squeal. Which isn't that big of a deal since all belts do need to be replaced. However, the squeal only occurs when the temperature is hot outside or has been driven for a while. If I go on a long drive the belt won't squeal until I get to more stop and go traffic. I have sprayed pulley's while the belt is squealing and it is the power steering pulley. However, I am not sure if to replace the power steering pump or just replace the pulley. Sounds like a bad bearing in my opinion.
I replaced my belt with the recommended Gates belt. Upon inspection of the pulleys I had one that looked questionable. Here is an image of the pulley that was pulled imgur.com/a/vU8DG#0. This is the lower Idler pulley. [URL] ....
I just noticed today of 4/1/2013 that there is a slight squeal coming from the engine bay. I notice it more when accelerating then if I am just idling. This sounds like it may be the lower idler pulley.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Serpentine Belt Squeal When First Start The Car Up
I have an 03 vr and my serpentine belt squeals when I first start the car up and after it warms up it will go away at idle but starts to squeal again when i accelerate. I can not seem to find what is causing this. After I start it and sprites a little water on it near the power steering pulley the squeal will disappear then come right back. I've tried new belt new tensioner and new power steering pulley. What else I could try or look for...

I have a 2010 Corolla S (5spd manual) with 51,xxx miles on it. I have noticed that when I start the engine the belt gives off a squeak and some times lasts a little longer than the last time... I have noticed that in colder weather the squeaking nose is noticeably louder and lasts longer. My father was speaking with a kid who has the same car as me and had the same problem. He informed my father that it was his water pump that was causing this to happen and he had it replaced under warranty by Toyota.

View 6 RepliesAccent LC (2000-05) :: Odd Vibration And Belt Squeal Intermittently At Idle
I am posting about a cam sensor code and alternator belt squeal.
Yesterday after getting in from a 600 mile drive from salt lake to eastern Oregon i took a look at the car to put some fogs in and clean it up a bit. It had always had some odd vibration at idle and belt squeal intermittently at idle. I pressed down on the alternator at idle and the vibration noise went away. So bam. Found that.
The nut on the square head mounting bolt holding the alternator was missing. So it was kind of just flapping around. Replaced the bolt and put a lock nut on. Problem solved so I thought.
I'm still getting belt squeal. And i think that its out of alignment. It looks like the pulley side of the alternator is closer to the engine block than the other side. Is this adjustable? Is the bushing on the mounting side worn out to the point of movement? Is this fixable?
Celica :: 1997 - Belt Squeal Sound On Turning Steering Wheel
We recently purchased our 17 year old son a 97 celica, Problem, when he goes out in the morning to start it, it sounds like a is belt squealing really really bad. We changed the tensioner and it stopped for about a week and then returned. We sprayed the belt with belt dressing to determine which belt it was, one at a time, it was the one that goes to the alternator, so we put a new belt on it, the sound stopped this time for a few days and returned.
This happens whether it is wet or dry, but seems to be worse when dry. The sound lasts for a few minutes and usually goes away. I thought it sounded (the actual sound) like power steering. The sound does get worse when we turn the steering wheel, then when the steering wheel is straightened it goes away. My son said now it periodically will do it will drive for no apparent reason and go away.

View 2 RepliesCivic - Honda :: 2001 - Belt Squeal In Lower Gears / RPMs
I've got a 2001 Honda Civic, automatic, that has a nice (what I think) belt squeal going. It seems to happen when it's wet/cold, in the lower gears/RPMs, when the defroster and/or rear defroster are on. SOMETIMES it will stop when I turn off the defrosters. If it persists I can make it stop by quickly putting it in park (at a light or stop sign) and right back into D or if moving gunning it for a few seconds. Occasionally I do get a hot rubber smell (like a burning vacuum belt) coming through as I accelerate. So as someone with no real car knowledge, does this sound like a belt issue that I can take care or myself (i.e. belt tensioner and a gauge) or should I just leave it to the pros?

Yesterday i was cleaning my car and when I took it out from the garage i noticed a spot on the garage floor. Put my finger on it and thought it was oil but when i looked under the car it was red. It was a few drips on the oil pan and a few on the splash shield. I'm sure its coolant because i was missing some too. View 1 RepliesFord Excursion :: Screech / Squeal Coming From Under The Hood While Driving
On the way home tonight, the Ex started to make what I can best describe as a screech/squeal. It sounds a little bit like a pulley spinning against a stuck belt or a motor that ran out of grease. I heard it 4 times and it lasted about a second or 2 each time. It seems to be coming from under the hood. The only common variable between all of the occurrences is a speed between 5 - 20 mph.
Belt has been replaced recently, when I looked under the hood all pulleys were spinning normally. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's the re-manufactured power steering pump that I put in after the redhead box install or the a/c compressor. When the compressor is running it makes a ticking noise. Maybe it's finally done and the screech is it starting to spin up when it engages the pulley?
Ford Excursion :: 2002 - High Pitched Squeal Under The Hood
My 2002 PSD X with 258K miles has a high pitched squeal in the engine compartment. I only had a minute to look at it as my wife was leaving with it. But, I was able to stick my head under the hood and it seems like it is coming from the front of the engine. Trying to pinpoint where the squeal is coming from with all of the other engine noises is tough. I suspect one of the bearings up there like idler pulley, tensioner pulley, alternator, AC compressor, water pump. The alternator has about 70K miles. The other items I don't know.
