Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Torque Convertor Rattle After Transmission Rebuild

My '01 f350 up and running the last 5 years. The truck has 130,000 miles on it and the transmission quit on me two weeks ago. My mechanic pulled the tranny and sent it to a very reputable rebuilder for a complete rebuild. My mechanic then reinstalled the tranny. I picked up the truck and when I paid the bill my mechanic told me that the rebuilder provided a new 4-plate torque convertor and that I would hear it rattle when I was at stop signs, stop lights etc. and that this was normal for these types of torque convertors. I have searched this forum and found all kinds of reasons for this rattle. None of which tell me this noise is normal or should be expected. I have no problem going back to my mechanic and discussing flex plate cracks, engine/tranny misalignment or any of the other causes...

I am about to purchase a 2001 F450 7.3L with a 6 speed ZF6 that has a slightly worn 2nd gear synchronizer. I will be rebuilding this transmission with a friend and was wonder if there is any documentation available to assist with the overhaul.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Engine Rebuild But Won't Start

2002 7.3 rebuild and installed in the truck but won't start ... Everything is new other than hpop and injectors they came out of a perfectly running engine.

The truck is making enough oil pressure to fire the injectors the first couple cylinders then it quits kinda like a cold start with bad glow plugs. Fuel pump was working perfectly when the engine was taken out of the truck and is still building pressure enough to get some black smoke from the exhaust after cranking for about 15 seconds ...

The hpop reservoir full every time I check it and after cranking for about 15 seconds the oil gauge in the dash for the lpop jumps up to its normal place.

Injectors got new o-rings when they were taken out of the running engine. I'm not sure what else could be keeping the truck from starting.

I have this 99f250 and it has a 273f, the transmission side of the case has threads stripped so I am about to remove and retap them. While its out should I consider rebuilding this thing? 197k miles, operates decently although the rear bearing on output side is my first thought to replace from mileage only.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: ESOF Hub Clicking - How To Repair / Rebuild

I was hearing a clicking noise on my passenger front wheel when rotating by hand.

Paul suggested I remove the ESOF hub and see if it is the wheel hub or the ESOF hub. It's the ESOF hub.

So I'd like to rebuild it for sure, it also has a nicked o-ring, so that accounts for part of the vacuum leak

I'd like to service the driver's side, too, while I'm at it. It doesn't exhibit any issues, so just regular maintenance stuff there.

Parts lists?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Check Engine Light Briefly On After HPOP Rebuild

Now that I have been driving for a while I kept seeing this light come on/off and I did a video below - I don't generally flash my lights so don't think I am aggressive - but I wanted to make sure to capture the video and the light coming on.

I was thinking valve cover connection the 50 cent mod - and maybe it's all coincidental - but I did have to pressure wash the troph where the oil collects and maybe something else got knocked loose.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Vibrates When Throttle - Rear Differential Rebuild

My truck (02 7.3L cc) started making a grilled ding type of vibration when I would let if the throttle. I felt the axle going into the rear differential was a bit loose, so I took the cover plate off. The pictures below show where the pinion I think is hitting, sort of like the bearing is allowing front to Rear differential scaring from movement. Rear movement.

How difficult is a rebuild, and is there anything I should be careful of?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Loud Bang And Lost Power In The Transmission

Last year I did some major work on my 02. Painted it, new injectors, 38R, and once it was back together, the transmission went south in a month. Got a Ford reman HD4R100. Shortly after the install, when in reverse, the torque convertor would lock up when you stepped on the throttle. As soon as you let off the throttle, it would disengage. Thinking it was a tranny issue, got another one from Ford. This one has been in the truck for about 9 months. And it seemed fine until about a month ago. It started doing the torque convertor lockup thing in reverse like the last one, but not as often.

Then last weekend it did it every time I put it in reverse. Then yesterday, while pulling away from a traffic light, there was a loud bang, and lost power in the transmission. Once stopped, I found out it has manual 1st and 2nd, but nothing else. No drive, overdrive, or reverse. I personally believe something electrical led to these issues, and ultimately, the transmission failure. I know the truck is not stock, but I do not run it hard very much. When it went bang yesterday, I was not being hard on it. Where to look at what is causing this?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Deep Transmission Oil Pan?

What's the truth behind the deep pan automatic transmission pans? I hear they are supposed to carry a few extra quarts of transmission oil and result in lower transmission temps. I've also heard this is not true since the amount of fluid going through the transmission cooler over a period of time still remains the same and therefore will not provide any lower transmission temps.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: ZF6 Transmission Leaking?

I let a small leak that I thought was engine oil go too long it appears before checking the transmission which had still been working ok. I added a whole quart of Lucas and then another quart of Mercon so the level was pretty low. What to do next as I am about to leave Alaska and go back down the highway. Is my ZF trashed now? Still seems to work fine. Or is there a seal somewhere that I can change?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Transmission Stays In OD Off Position Until Hit 55 Mph

I've read a few things on the 4R100 and have a question.

My transmission stays in the OD off position until I hit 55 mph no matter the tune I am using and then will up shift to OD. It turns back off once I drop below 30 mph.

I was told when I bought the truck that it was a factory tow package. Is this a thing?

I would like an option to turn it off when I'm not towing or climbing a hill if I can.

Any way to modify it with a switch?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Installed Transmission Now ABS Light On?

Picked up my truck from the local transmission shop yesterday and on the way home (less than 3 miles away), I noticed the ABS light was on. I turned around back to the shop but the guy behind the desk couldn't pull the codes (his mechanics smart with codes don't work Saturday). So I will head back tomorrow when his code-smart dude is back but was wondering is there anything they could have done during the tranny install to muck up the ABS system? Or do they need to do something because of the new transmission?

I checked the #15 5-amp fuse under the steering wheel but it looks good. Truck runs good to me and shifts fine in the 10 or so miles I drove it yesterday but I'm not savvy with transmissions or ABS.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Transmission Slipping When Put It In Drive

My tranny is acting odd. I put in drive and seems to slip a lot in 1st, barely even move at some times. If I put it in 1st with the shifter it goes in and grabs then I can shift up to 2nd or drive and there aren't problems. It drives normally when not from dead stop.

Transmission has 50k miles on it since replacement. Fluid level is normal. I don't tow and drive it particularly hard. I will have to go back and look at miles since last fluid change. I should be right around 30k miles since last change.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Small Vibration In Transmission

2001 7.3 auto with 188k miles. Supposed to have had a new tranny at 99k miles. Fluid nice and red with no smell.

Here's problem: during the 3rd shift (gear before overdrive), and between 40 and 50 mph, I get a small vibration in tranny. Seems to be just that shift. It's not noticeable if I run it a little harder on the shift (speed up). If I let it lag on the shift, the vibration is worst. All other gears seem ok.

Questions:
1. I believe I have a 4R100. It has a drain plug, but how do I confirm?
2. I have a couple different scan tools. Should I be getting codes if I have tranny problems? Or is there a scan PID I can check?
3. I was thinking of starting with fluid change. Since it probably hasn't been changed since 99k miles.

Last question: any detailed write on fluid change handy? That would include type of fluid, filter part number, etc?

Running dual coolers? I just got a new transmission not too long ago and want it to last. Was looking at this mishimoto with fan. That way in the winter i can deactivate it and use it while towing or summer. Also the way I see it if I leave the stock cooler in place it's one less thing to mess with.

I recently bought a 1999 F250 Super Duty 4x4 7.3 Powerstroke MT with 280,000 miles. The reverse is out and after reading several posts am I to understand that any ZF6 well interchange in it or is it year specific. Guess what my question should read "What year vehicles well the transmission interchange and that there isn't any difference between trucks that run this motor with MT except for the powertrain, like F250 F250 super duty F350 and so on. The second question is how hard would it be to fix the reverse myself. I do have some mechanical experience. Except for the reverse, the trucks run perfectly.

This is my first diesel truck . I'm also confused because it has an adjustable gauge mounted on the bottom of the dash that you can select the performance from. I was told it has a performance chip and that's what that was for. I was told by the man I bought it from that the truck had been bullet proof but I don't know a thing about diesel upgrades or what to look for if it has. Except for reverse, everything works. Low high 2x4 & 4x4. Got it because he had to pay the bail bonds man. Guess I got a deal on it I was told.

Ok I have had this noise going on for about 1 week before transmission went out. I just built the trans and its still there.

I had a mishap years back with front end hub bearings so I replaced with New Timken Bearings. Well that wasn't it but at least I know where I

stand with those. It starts making a noise when slowing down about 3-5 seconds before coming to a stop. I thought maybe the carrier bearing in

driveshaft?

Pinion bearing in rear diff? I need to service the parking brakes on rear so I may pull it down and go through it.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Overheating - Leaking Transmission Pan Gasket

I purchased the truck over a year ago and never had a problem with the transmission. The only issue was a leaking transmission pan gasket so I changed it put the same fluid that came out back in it since it looked brand new and didnt smell burnt or anything. So fast forward time and my girlfriend was driving the truck over the winter and lost control of the truck and spun it around and hit the front end of the truck into a rock wall.I have a weston bar on the front end that took the majority of the hit.

Shortly after the transmission would start to run warmer than normal. It would be 20 degrees outside and my transmission temp sensor would be reading around 140. Now that the weather is getting warmer the transmission is heating up a lot more. I took it to a guy to have him look at it and thought maybe the cooler was clogged or something like that and possibly put a larger cooler on it. He called me up a few days later and said their was a larger cooler already on it but it was not hooked up. It is a black one mounted on the front of the radiator. He said he cut the lines off of the old one and there was a slight bend in the one line so he cut a little higher than that line and then hooked up the cooler.

He told me he blew in the lines and there was no restrictions in it, i guess no pressure when we blue on the lines. I drove it home and the temp went higher than ever before up to 220. The cooler on the front was ice cold and trans pan was hot.I am starting to think maybe the bypass is bad and the fluid isn't getting to the cooler. The fluid is still pink and does not smell burnt so I want to fix the problem before any issues arise. The truck has 137000 miles on it. I have attached pictures of the cooler that he said was already there but not hooked up.
