Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Sudden Shut Down / Idle And Small Hiccup At Speed

I've read weeks worth of post to try and fix my late 99.5. First, I'll give syptoms then what has been changed/worked on. While driving at low rpm truck will shut off. As if the key was completely turned off. I am able to throw it in neutral and start back up. Not very safe.

Most the time when I feel the power/electrical loss I can hit the gas pedal fast and most the time "catch it" before it will completely shuts down. Also, I feel a very small "hiccup" at higher speeds. Not often tho.

Changed. Cps. Twice. First aftermarket, second ford.
Changed ICP sensor.
Had dp tuner installed. Right after tuner install abs sensor went out. Like the same day.
I have edge insight for all gauges.

I'm lost.. if these symptoms ring a bell for any of you that would be fantastic. I'm original owner...

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - CEL - Rough Idle - Loss Of Power?

I have a 2002 F-250 7.3, 159k on it. I bought it in March, ran AWESOME up till now. I was driving to work last week, check engine light came on, truck lost power and started idling rough. I have a buddy who works for a Ford dealer as a diesel mechanic, he came over with his scanner and laptop. #2,#4,#8 cylinders kept coming up saying possible problems are injectors, harness, rings.. He also did an electrical check, that all checked out. He told me to get injectors, so I got 4 injectors (yes I got the correct #8 injector), valve cover gasket, injector harness and 4 glow plugs.

The parts came last Friday, we did the job and it ran great. Drove it Friday night, Saturday, Sunday morning, no issues. Sunday afternoon we were on our way to a birthday party, truck started doing the exact same thing... Check engine light, rough idle, loss of power. After I got home from the party, my buddy came back over, put it on the scanner again, getting the same codes again. Deleted the codes, ran the tests again, same codes, deleted the codes, rant the tests again, same codes.

He said he is going to come by tomorrow with the box to check each individual cylinder.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Growl Only At Idle

Ok, so my '02 has dual alt from factory and lately I have noticed a "growl" only at idle. Upon further diagnosis it is coming from the belt. So I replaced the tensioner, upper idler, and belt seeing as how they didn't look in good shape. Still there. I noticed from looking under the truck where the belt comes off the crank to the lower idler there is a lot (2" or so) belt *flutter* (slap/slop) but as soon as you give it any fuel it smooths out and the noise goes away. Let it idle and the noise comes back with the belt slap/flutter. For those with dual alternators, look at your belt from under the truck and see if yours is smooth at idle. Now I do notice it doesn't make the noise for the first few minutes of running. Next I am going to try bypassing the lower alternator and lower idler to try and pinpoint the prob.

I have a 2002 F350 4wd with the 7.3. I was driving the truck and all of a sudden it was running like crap. the engine light was on. after a minute or so the engine light goes off and the truck is running fine. then again starts running like crap. I am close to the house so I limp it home. runs like crap.... will barley climb small hills. engine light is on. get home turn it off... next day... starts up and runs great for 10 - 15 min. engine light comes back on... runs like crap.... my neighbor says "It's the crank position sensor" I replace it.... runs great for a month.... now it's doing the same thing......

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Rough Idle After Injector Install

I bought this truck a few months ago. After trying everything under the sun to try and rectify a poor running problem, it was realized that injectors needed replacing. Ended up putting in 160cc/30% unlimited diesel performance injectors. The truck has a rough idle and surging problem. After trying to install the chip from gearhead, the truck didn't run any different, ultimately (according to the shop doing the install) smoking the ECU. New stock ECU, same problem. Goes good under throttle, just idle is bad. I get weird looks at the gas station. People think it has a big cam.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - High Idle While In Gear / Stay At 800 RPM

So finally got my truck running due to a fuel issue. Anyways been driving it for a week or two now, and I have a strange problem idk if it has been covered here or not.

Driving around tow etc if you come to a light or whatever and stop the rpms stay at 800rpm. Now if you shift it out of gear and back into drive the rpms settle back down around 650. Where is should be.

My guess is the torque converter is not disengaged all the way when it stuck at high rpm (800-900) for this situation. No cel, slippage, or crazy noises

2002 7.3 power stroke all stock right now @160k black crewcab

Previous owner had a tunner on it but not anymore. Could it have smoke the trans???

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - High Idle In Cold Weather

Does the 2002 7.3 have an automatic high idle in cold weather?When you start it after it runs for a few moments it goes into high idle until you hit the accelerator. I had a 96 powerstroke before this one,it didn't do this. Just wondering?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 F350 - Hard Idle And Shutter On Acceleration

2002 F350 single wheel 4x4, 280k miles chipped with a 6

My problem first started when the bottom of my sending unit broke off in tank causing me to run out of fuel at 1/4 tank. I dropped tank and repaired. A week later I noticed fuel dampness on my tank and discovered I crossthreaded cap on sending unit. About this time I started getting a shutter at slight acceleration only and a harder hit at idle. I thought air in lines so I dropped tank and reassembled. No air in line at all now but I still have a shutter so I replaced fuel filter in case of obstruction. No luck. Now since I have owned truck it has been a pain to crank in cold weather if it wasn't plugged in over night. It has been hard lately even in moderate weather since shutter started so I replaced both batteries today.

I replaced the ICP today also because I noticed the other day when there was oil on and around harness to it and when I unplugged it today the truck changed idle and there was oil inside. After I changed it I took it out and it still had the shutter and sound of a miss. At about 8 miles in it just died going down the road. I coasted to the side and it cranked right back up and drove home. The shutter doesn't fill as bad but there. Also I live in the mountains and on my way home after cutoff I had chip in Stock position and had to put peddle to the floor to climb hill. I've never had to do that. I'm getting worried I work for a living and caint keep throwing money at it aimlessly. I'm thinking at this point IPR or CPS. But I'm no mechanic so I could be completely wrong.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 F250 Starts And Runs With Rough Idle For About 10 Seconds When Cold

I have an issue with my 7.3.... the truck will not start if it sits overnight without being plugged in, even in 65 degree weather. It starts and runs with a rough idle for about 10 seconds after its been plugged in for an hour, after the rough idle is gone it runs great .. it will Stat back up as long as the truck is warm (70+).... I've replaced the batteries, glow plugs, starter (it was going bad) and fuel filter. .. also replaced the gpr today. ....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Low Power Cruising At Speed At Low RPM

I've been trying to track down a lack of power with my 7.3 for a few months now. I've had the truck for 8 years and there's just something off with it lately. When warm under a light load, such as accelerating while cruising at 40mph or going up a light hill at 30mph+, around 1100 to 1400rpm, there's just a distinct lack of power.

The engine starts lugging and the injector or valve noise increases dramatically until I push the throttle down far enough (60%+) for the transmission to downshift. Once it downshifts the engine sounds normal and takes off like it should.

At higher RPMs, it's seems to run okay, but it feels a bit down on power there. Otherwise, it starts great, idles pretty well with a slight miss, and no smoke that I've been able to see.

When it's dead cold in the morning, it seems to run better than any other time of the day.

I don't have any trouble codes other than a disconnected EPBV. One morning I did get P1670 when the engine nearly died when coming to a stop. I'm chalking that one up as a fluke due to a broken valve cover harness connector tab.

The truck has 170k miles and is mostly stock: AFE intake, 4" exhaust, and no muffler. It has an old Edge Evo programmer (yeah, yeah) that I removed a while back. I going to put it back on so I can monitor my EGTs.

The ICP, IPR%, and boost are all within spec. Buzz test sounds fine. CCT says #8 is bad with the grey CPS. Here's a datalog of a full throttle 70mph run.

[URL] ......

Recently I've decided to fix known problems:
HPOP line leak to the driver side bank
All Injector O-rings (black diesel in fuel bowl, suspicious oil consumption)
Replaced leaking intercooler couplers
EBP tube clogged, causing 0 boost sporadically, bypassed it by teeing into MAP sensor hose.
Various cam position sensors: grey (B), new dark blue (C)
Replaced leaking ICP sensor with generic sensor 6 months ago and unfortunately can't find original to test with. 2900psi without a tune seems a bit high, but reads consistently otherwise.
New fuel pump
Added service port to fuel bowl and measured 60-64psi at idle
Some things I have left to try:
Measure fuel pressure under load
Try out a parts store CPS I forgot I had.
Ziptie/secure broken valve cover harness connectors

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001 F350 - Power Loss / Hard To Hold The Speed?

I drive a new to me 2005 F350, he has a 2001 F350. While we were talking he said he didn't think his pickup had the power it should have. He pulls a 5th wheel camper that weighs around 8000 pounds fully loaded. He said it takes a couple of miles to get to 55 mph, and it is hard to hold the speed. It doesn't have the power it did when he first got it last year. He was told that a diesel is slow getting started. He rode with me in mine, when I dropped it about half throttle to pass a slow car he said he could tell mine had way more power.

His check engine light is not on, it starts good both when hot and when cold. It runs smooth, no miss as far as I can tell listening to it. What are some common issues that could cause this? He did just change the oil and fuel filters, not sure about the air filter. He said the power loss came before he serviced the engine, and did not improve after the fuel filter change. Where to start? He was also told to check the filter inside of his fuel tank, so he is getting ready to drop his tank.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Hesitation When Accelerating At Speed

When I'm driving at highway speed and press the accelerator after coasting a bit, the engine stumbles then picks up and accelerates. The fuel bowl assembly is brand new as of 5 months ago, and I drained of any water last month when I changed oil. Truck is stock with 350k miles.

Apart from this issue, it runs well and idles smoothly. Injectors are healthy per a buzz test a powerstroke mechanic performed last year. What could cause the stumble off idle?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Clunking Noise After Speed Dropped To 20 MPH

2001 ford excursion 7.3l diesel.

So I tried to go to work today but the truck said no. it started out fine then out of no where it felt as if someone slammed on the back brakes engine still revved up like normal just didn't want to go. speed dropped to 20mph then i heard a clunk. after that it was fine until it hit 20 mph again. it did the same thing again.

So I got mad at it thinking the trans went out gave it the beans and it shifts into all gears but did not feel like it had power. i did pull over and check the fluid looked a little orange. when got back in the truck i did notice the od off light blinking?? drove the truck home was shifting fine but hear this awesome sounded like a hand grenade rattling around underneath. when i got home notice fluid coming from the bell housing(out of the bottom).

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Strange Noise At Low Speed - Transmission Went Out?

Ok I have had this noise going on for about 1 week before transmission went out. I just built the trans and its still there.

I had a mishap years back with front end hub bearings so I replaced with New Timken Bearings. Well that wasn't it but at least I know where I

stand with those. It starts making a noise when slowing down about 3-5 seconds before coming to a stop. I thought maybe the carrier bearing in

driveshaft?

Pinion bearing in rear diff? I need to service the parking brakes on rear so I may pull it down and go through it.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2000 - Smooth Idle But No Power

I purchased a 2000 excursion with the 7.3 a couple of weeks ago. The guy said originally in the add that it need #2 and #8 injectors replaced. When I went and looked at it he had already replaced them and said the it still has no power and needed the remaining 6 replaced. I purchased it as it was a good deal thinking I should be able to get it fixed for worst case a set of injectors. BTW the engine has little to no blowby and starts easy and idles great.

The problem it it will not build any boost (has external boost gauge). Actually the gauge only shows vacuum. With the truck in park or neutral you can slowly rev the motor to 2500rpm and all seems fine but as soon as you break past 2500rpm it sound like it is missing and starts blowing white smoke. The smoke smells like when a diesel heater runs out of diesel. If you try and drive it it has NO power and will not move out of its own way and will eventually start like it is missing and blowing white smoke.

The previous owner replaced the following:

#2 injector
#8 injector
UVC gaskets
MAP Sensor
Wastegate solenoid sensor

The first thing I did was start looking at the no boost issue and pulled the turbo. I deleted the EBPV while i was there. Also the turbine wheel was in very bad shape so i replaced the turbine wheel, shaft, seals, bushings and installed a new compressor wheel 5+5 wheel off ebay. Reinstalled turbo and the symptoms are the same. I also replaced the clamps on the spider with Tbolt clamps instead of the worm gear styles and it psi tested all piping and intercooler to 30psi with no leaks. Also the up pipes have already been replaced with the bellowed style so there are no leaks and it has a 4" straight exhaust.

I have since ordered oring kits for the injectors and also ordered the fittings for the fuel bowl so i can check fuel pressure. it has a new air filter, oil filter, oil and fuel filter installed.

The ICP sensor has oil in the plug but if i unplug it the symptoms are still there.

I have also used a scanner and the ICP pressure is approx 500psi at idle and the duty cycle is about 11% at idle. Also the HPOP looks to be new as it is very clean compared to the surrounding parts and i have checked the HPOP reservoir and it is full to withing 1/2" from the threads.

2000 Excursion
7.3
205000 miles

I am assuming that the injectors are original other than #2 and #8.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001- Rough Idle - Power Loss?

Dad has a 01 one ton with the 7.3 and isn't real tech savvy so I'm posting for him. He is the original owner and has been complaining recently about the lack of power. Particularly the upper end. He is having to downshift way more often and where he used to not have to. And we've both noticed a very noticeable shake at idle. Not a vibration but a true shake. He changes the oil every 5000 on the dot and I've gone and changed the air and fuel filter and ran hose and see foam and royal purple injector cleaner through it with no results. Truck is all stock with 225000 on it.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001 F550 - Surge Off Idle / No Power

I have 01 F550 6spd 4x4. sounds rhythmic, smooth at idle but just over 1200 is a pattern surge but doesn't sound like one cylinder, cel is off, ICP and pigtail changed as it was leaking , no change. From what I've read duty on ICP and IPR should be about same % I've included the codes I've gotten, I have the epc disconnected right now as I thought it was a wastegate issue, checking the ICP plug next,anything I've missed? It had a cyl 8 contribution at idle which I hear is common? Will changing CPS work with that one? Think it's a grey one. There's no water in bowl I replaced filter, since replaced ICP, pigtail, and bleeding fuel bowl and new filter the codes are gone but still misses, will be checking uvch, injector buzz test showed no faults.
