Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Noise When Engage A Gear
Just wondering to diagnose the noise my manual 2002 is making when I engage a gear.
Generally, it'll clank every single time I put the gear in gear. I.e. clutch down (quiet), shift into gear (clank), lift clutch up (clank).
Very annoying; has been happening basically since I bought the car (but obviously not when I test drove it!)
I do not think it's a motor mount, especially since I wouldn't think that moving the gear into gear (before lifting clutch back up) would cause the motor to shift enough to make the mount clank. If at all...
Anyway, here is a link to a YouTube video I've uploaded. Every time you hear a clank, I'm simply lifting the clutch to engage the gear. I do this quite a few times going forward and backward. [URL] .....
Elantra XD (2001-06) :: 2002 - Cruise Control Would Not Engage
My cruise control wouldn't engage this afternoon and once I got home I noticed that the brake lights including the third light are on. Headlight switch is rotated to off position, checked brake fluid and its normal, backed car up and hit pedal thinking something might have been locked up but to no avail.
View 4 RepliesElantra XD (2001-06) :: 2002 GLS Making Clunking And Whining Noises At Certain Speeds
I recently had my manual transmission go out on my 2002 Elantra GLS. It has 208k miles and the tranny had been giving me shifting issues for years. It finally made some clunking and whining noises at certain speeds. I picked up a replacement tranny, but the car has sat in my garage for the last two months. I slowly worked on it over that time and have finally completed it. I went to start it up tonight and it idles normally for 1 second, then it revs up to about 5k. It does this over and over until I turn the car off, and a very hard to see white-ish smoke comes from the air intake tube as I have it only partially on for testing.
The car ran fine before hand. What could this be? I have never experienced this with a vehicle before and searching on the web only gives me links to people having idling and revving issues while at stop lights or on the freeway. The idle did used to stick around 2.5k RPM when I started it up from time to time. Although, a small blip of the throttle would set it back to its normal idle speeds. BTW, the engine runs well with no knocks and has great compression across all 4 cylinders.
Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 5.4L With 4R70W Transmission Won't Engage Any Gear
The problem started with a front seal leak a few months ago which I had no choice but to continue driving with because of low funds. I don't drive much so a couple of quarts of ATF was usually enough to get me out and about for what little driving I had to do. I know.. a front seal is cheap, but I'm partially disabled and unable to work on anything that is not under the hood.
I finally scraped up enough money to hire a friend to replace the seal, but he had a life crisis before completing the work, so I had to get another friend to reinstall the trany... still had the leak, but I could get around by adding ATF as before.
So we tried again... dropped everything and put another new seal on. This stopped the leak, but we got some grinding/squealing noises and could not get the trany to engage any gear.
From reading forum posts and other sources, we decided to replace the TC which we just completed this evening. We got some more of the grinding / squealing noise like before, except that it only occurred the first time we tried cranking the engine, the 2nd time we got no noises, but again no gears engaging.
What to check/replace next assuming there is something we can look at other than a total trany rebuild or replacement. I personally find it hard to believe we could have gone from a tolerably functional trany to scrap metal just replacing a seal and the TC. Its gotta be something simple we overlooked !!
Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Transmission Is Shifting Into Higher Gear Without Releasing The Lower Gear
My 2006 Elantra (54,000 miles) shifts really, really hard when it's not cold and passes through the 35 mph range -- hard enough to make you glad you've got your seatbelt on. I've taken it to my regular mechanic and now it's in an automatic transmission shop.
My mechanic changed the fluid (twice), and took it through a "learning sequence". The fluid didn't look that bad and he reported that there were no codes to work with. He thinks I'm going to have to get a new transmission.
The AT shop has confirmed that there are no codes to work with and that the problem begins at 143 degrees. They tell me that the transmission is shifting into a higher gear without releasing the lower gear. They tried replacing a couple of solenoids, but that yielded no change in behavior. Now, they're telling me they "think" I need a new computer. I'm just afraid the trial & error approach is going to cost me a boat-load.
Ford :: Very Difficult To Get 2006 Mustang (manual Transmission) Into 1st Gear
I have a 2006 Mustang (manual 5 speed) that recently has been having a problem getting into 1st gear
Symptoms:1. When the engine is cold, there is no issue getting the car into gear2. Once it warms up (after approx. 20 miles or 30 minutes driving), it is very difficult to get into 1st gear. I have to put it in 2nd then get it to slip into 1st.3. On hot days the problem starts sooner and is hard to get into the other gears4. when the car has warmed up on a cool day. I can get the car into the other gears (2nd, etc) when standing still, but first is almost impossible
Originally the problem showed up when my wife drove the car, but it is getting worse. Why the engine and/or outside temperature would affect how my I can get my car into gear?
Ford Transmission :: 2003 F150 - Difficult To Put In First Gear / Little Grind Or Thump?
I just got my 03 F-150 with 112k on the clock. It has the manual 5 speed tranny behind the 4.6L.
However, since I've gotten the truck, it's kind of difficult to put in first gear. If you are sitting at a light and in neutral and the light changes and you push the clutch to the floor and put it in 1st (fairly quickly - a normal reaction time), it will actually do a little grind and/or thump. However, if push the clutch to the floor and wait a couple of seconds and then shift into first, it's a bit of a "push" but it will go in without grinding.
Once in a while shifting to 3rd it feels the same way, but won't really grind.
I'm just wondering if that means the clutch is toast or is it the trans that is toast? Reason I ask is my 96 Cobra with the T-45 5 speed would grind going into 5th gear if I just normally put it in. I used to have to put it in neutral and then push the clutch in again and slowly shift to 5th for it not to grind. And it wouldn't go into 3rd if I tried to shift fast or under power. I replaced the clutch and found out the trans was actually going bad, but it had 173k on the clock.
So, I'm really paranoid that it's my darn trans in the truck instead of just the clutch. Whenever my old Camaro clutches used to be dying, they would slip more than they would ever grind going into a gear.
Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Transmission Slamming Into 3rd Gear When Driven In Automatic
2005 Elantra. After I start the car and let it idle, it will slowly start to increase in RPMs without touching the gas pedal. The RPMs will stop around 3-4k and will remain there. If it put the car into gear, forward or reverse, it will surge when releasing the brake. The RPMs will vary, rising and falling, randomly but won't return to normal idle, around 2k if I remember right.
I have recently changed my fuel pump, fuel filter and screen. Also, changed spark plugs and wires.
I know that the transmission needs to be checked, it was slamming into 3rd gear when driven in automatic, but can be avoided with manual shifting. Not sure if this could have anything to do with the new problem.
Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Manual Transmission Always Pops Out Of 2nd Gear To Neutral
I have a 2005 Elantra GT hatchback that I love with a 5 speed transmission. Lately every time I'm in 2nd gear, the transmission will pop out of 2nd into neutral. This only happens in 2nd gear. I heard it could be the shift collar (i.e. teeth?) that aren't grabbing in that gear.
View 5 RepliesElantra XD (2001-06) :: 2002 - Grinding Noise On Reverse Gear
My car has been making this grinding noise for the last 2 months. It happens when I put the car in reverse gear and slowly release the clutch. Rarely happens also in 1st and 2nd and 3rd and is always at the beginning of the transition when I am letting the clutch go. I do not know if it is the transmission, the clutch or any other part. I drive a 2002 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed manual transmission with over 120 k miles
Here is a link to a video I posted so you can hear the noise it makes : [URL] ....

View 2 RepliesFord Transmission :: 2004 F450 - Transmission Will Not Engage In Any Gear
Just put the 6.0 back in the truck, engine working good now. Went to take it for a test drive and the transmission will not engage in any gear. I don't have any codes coming up on my scanner. Can not figure out why the transmission is not working from engine R&R.
- Fluid level is good
- Swapped wiring harness from my other truck and still nothing
Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Engine Light While Driving And 2nd Gear Taking Time Shifting - Thump On Transmission
O.K. first of all I had an issue with the Odometer pointer being jumpy. Sometimes it wouldn't move. Now I replaced the input sensor at first and did not fix the problem. I replaced the output sensor and fixed it. "BUT", Now, I have a problem with the transmission shifting. I get an engine light while driving and the 2nd gear seems to take its time shifting and when it does it make the left side drive shaft kick in hard and spends my wheel to a screeching effect. Plus a thump on the transmission. I rechecked the sensor for connection and reinstalled. Drove the car still have the same issue?
View 2 RepliesElantra MD (2010-15) :: Transmission Does Not Always Engage Immediately When Car Is Cold
I have a 2015 Hyundai Elantra SE with only 3880 miles on it. I purchased it new last March. I have noticed when the car is cold when I shift from Park to Drive or Reverse to Drive, the transmission does not always engage immediately. It takes a second or so (not much over a second, but I haven't timed it). The car shifts smooth without any other issues. I have not noticed this concern when the car is warmed up, or seen this when shifting into reverse.
Should I be concerned about this shifting behavior? I have not contacted the dealership yet.
Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Auto Transmission - 4th Gear Won't Engage
I'll start this off with a few months ago, I went on a trip and along the way noticed that the car wouldn't get into gear. This happened for a few moments, and solved itself.
Fast forward to a few days ago:
So, my Golf MK4 AUTO 1.6L transmission doesn't want to shift into 4th, sometimes.
One and two are good, but sometimes I get quite a lag in between disengaging 2nd and getting 3rd also.
Furthermore, sometimes I get 4th 'semi' engaging, where the engine is revving too much to be fully in gear, but I get power to the wheels and accelerate (slowly).
I did a VAGCOM scan and got the old:
00652 - Gear Monitoring
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
I also had a CEL on my dash, which I cleared with the VAGCOM. This removed the light, but of course the error still persists.
I've been reading around, and some people have said the issue is the TCM, but some people have had similar problems and a TCM replacement has not fixed this.
(Just btw, my TCM model is 01M927733LK).
And some people have had good results with solenoid replacements. So, I was thinking of doing a ATF flush, just because it was recommend on some posts, but won't necessarily fix the problem.
Contacted a garage to do this for me (never flushed automatic tranny before) and mentioned the VAGCOM codes, and he said this is a slip code.
So, now I'm not really sure what to do to fix it. Are the solenoids interchangeable? Am I able to switch two gears' solenoids to see if it moves the issue to another gear, proving its the solenoid?
Bmw - 325 :: 2002 - Unable To Engage Manual Transmission
I have a 2002 325xi 5 speed manual with 111K miles on it.
Outside Temp 34 degrees F
I was able to pull out of the driveway and drive down the road for about 4 miles and then as I was shifting into 4th gear the temp was displayed in the info box as +37 and the car would not move forward. (was not able to engage into 4th gear or any gear.
I pulled into a parking lot and went through all the gears but none would engage. No noise was heard from the transmission.
I depressed the clutch, put into first gear, let out the clutch and gave it gas but got no movement at all. Repeated for all gears including Reverse.
The car drove fine the other day, The service light is on and I got the following codes the other day from Pep Boys:
P0171
P0174
P0102
Ford Transmission :: No Clutch / Truck Will Not Engage A Gear While Running

View 1 RepliesElantra XD (2001-06) :: Whining Sound But Not From Engine?
Over the past week I've observed a whining sound. I've been trying to narrow it down and here is what I've got:
- It is speed related but not RPM related.
- It is not louder at any particular speed.
- It happens when coasting in neutral (manual transmission).
- The volume does not change based on whether turning or going straight.
- The pitch is mid/high, very similar to the whining from a too tight timing belt. And it gets lower and higher based on speed.
- As best as I can tell it is coming from the front driver's side.
- It is intermittent, although it's there more often than not.
- No uneven wear on front tires or other signs.
It's worth mentioning that another sound came soon after this whining. It's a sort of fluttering click sound. It becomes a lot louder when accelerating uphill. This also is speed related but not RPM related, in that the flutter/click increases in speed as the vehicle increases in speed.
GTI 337/20th Anniversary :: Transmission Wouldn't Engage At All When Tried To Throw It Back Into Gear
The other day my transmission was driving fine, until I stopped to let someone out. When I tried to throw it back into gear, it wouldn't engage at all, just had a slight grind almost like the sound of a chain coming off a bike (so I pushed back in the clutch and parked it). I haven't been having any issues with it nor have I been driving it hard.
