Camry :: 2006 - Whining Noise From Under The Hood
We have a 2006 camry with he 4 cylinders at about 106,000 miles. All of a sudden, the car has started a loud whining or purring noise. I have checked all my fluids and the appear to be at proper operating levels and there is no leaking anywhere that I can see. I replaced the water pump last year but have not replaced a belt on the car. The noise starts when you crank the car up and sounds like it is in tune with the engine. The steering doesn't appear to be affected although if there has been a gradual change the ease of steering I may not notice, but it is not at the point of being a manual steering without power. I cannot hear it through the speaker (like a bad diode). No real performance change in the engine or transmission except when decreasing speed the downshift of the transmission is more noticeable, like the gnome is dragging the through the gears.

View 5 RepliesPassat (B6) :: 2008 VR6 Whistling Noise Coming From Under The Hood - PCV Valve?
I have noticed a whistling noise coming from under the hood. When I inspected it I notices suction coming form a small hole on the rear drivers side of the valve cover. From the little information I could find this is a PCV valve of sorts that is molded into the valve cover itself. The local dealership quoted nearly 850.00 for parts and labor. I spent a little time calling around. A VW dealer in a local city said that there was not a valve molded into the valve cover, and most likely this whistling was being caused by a hole in a vacuum line somewhere else between the engine and the firewall. This small hole is located above the where the crank case ventilation hose meets the valve cover. Is my local dealer correct in that it is the PCV valve that is part of the valve cover? Is this a fairly straight forward repair that can be done in the garage, and are there any other aftermarket fixes besides purchasing a whole valve cover?
View 6 RepliesHonda - Cr-v :: 2004 - Dry / Whining Sound More Like Wind Whistling Through Something Metal
About 2 weeks ago, my 2004 Honda CR-V (176K miles, manual transmission) started making sort of a dry, whistling, whining sound. It's not a grinding sound but more like wind whistling through something metal...? I think it's coming from the right back wheel or wheel area. It doesn't start until I've been driving maybe 6 or 7 minutes, and usually kicks in above 40 MPH although I've heard it when going slower, too. If I jiggle the steering wheel the sound stops and starts. It also stops when I go around curves or make turns. At first it was happening all the time, but over the weekend it seemed to be diminishing.
I did record the sound on my phone and uploaded the video to the following link: [URL] .... You can hear it stop at about 16 seconds and then start again at 20. Also, starting at 35 seconds I stop for a light and then restart at about 1:10. So you can see how it kicks in as I start going faster. No jokes about my shifting or driving or the dog panting in the background. I'm sure the vid will go viral.
I took it to a mechanic Monday but he only heard it for about 3-4 seconds. He put the car on the lift and inspected the wheels but didn't see anything obvious so is chalking it up to old car syndrome. So, do I seek a second opinion? Is this something obvious for CRVs? I just want to make sure the bearings (or something like that) aren't going on it.
Jeep - Wrangler :: High Pitched Whistling Noise Coming From Under The Hood
There is a whistling noise that is coming from under the hood of my Jeep. It is more noticeable on cold days. It temporarily disappears when my foot is on the accelerator or after I have been idling at a stop sign for 30 seconds. The noise starts again when I start driving.
View 6 RepliesHyundai - Noises :: Intermittent Accelerator Whistling / Open Air Whirring Noise When Idling
My car developed an "intermittent" accelerator whistling noise coming thru one of the speakers (I think). The harder you accelerate - the louder the whistle. When idling, it sounds like an open air whirring noise. Of course every time I bring it to the shop - it stops and when I hear it it's never convenient to get to the shop!
View 4 RepliesImpala - Chevrolet :: 2009 - Whining Noise Coming From Under Hood
So I have a 2008 Chevy Impala LS that hasn't given me any real problems. I had some battery troubles recently that were the result of me leaving the parking/security lights on for 10 consecutive hours, but overnight-charged the battery and was good-to-go after that. But it seems like RIGHT after that was when the whining noise started.
It seems to be related to my power-steering system. I know this since the whining seems to pick up with acceleration and turning. However, I checked my power steering fluid and it did not appear to be depleted at all. I did notice, however, that it seems to be a light greenish color...which from doing a google search, I've gotten the impression that it's probably not supposed to be that color.
What exactly is going on here?
Corolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: Whining Noise Coming From Under The Hood When Accelerate
A few weeks ago I started noticing what I would best describe as a whining noise when I accelerate. It's not very high-pitched but definitely noticeable. It seems the more I accelerate, the higher pitched the whine becomes, and I can only hear it when I am accelerating. It is not very loud: if I have the radio or stereo on I can't hear it. I have a 2009 Corolla LE with around 122k miles on it (I drive a lot for work.) A few weeks ago I had the car in for an oil change, and was told that my battery was getting low and will need to be replaced soon, so I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with it. As far as describing the specific location of where it is coming from, the best I can say is that it's coming from somewhere under the hood...I know that's a very vague description, but I can't really pinpoint it to anywhere beyond that.

What is that little motor shown in the still image (in focus at 22 seconds in the video) and why is it ticking? I noticed for the first time ever that it coincidentally wasn't ticking when I first tried shooting this video. After idling for a few minutes, it came on and started ticking away. Its much more noticeable when the engine idle is lower than in the video, and its more noticeable in person. The noise I am referring to is more pronounced later in the video at around 44 seconds when I go completely out of focus because I am putting the mic right next to it.

Camry :: 2004 - High Pitched Whining Noise At Idle / Battery Light Flicker On And Off
Yesterday as soon as I started my car, I noticed a high pitched whining noise. As I drove, it seemed to stop, but as I slowed down and idled, it came back. After driving a couple miles, the battery light came on, so I turned off the AC, radio, and lights and it went off again, but as I sat at stop lights it would flicker on and off again.

View 10 RepliesChevrolet - Malibu :: 2000 - Whistling Sound From Under The Hood?
The whistling sound is fairly straightforward but there are little details that are weird.
I noticed maybe 1 or 2 weeks ago that the car would make a whistling sound, not a high pitched one but a fairly middle-high sort of tone. It would make this sound when I put the car and drive and maybe just start to gas it but NOT all of the time. By the time I am at a regular speed it has gone.
But sometimes when I slow down the sound will return and go away when the car has come to a complete stop. But this is not a constant pattern. It is on and off. Only recently could I say it has become more frequent but even then I hesitate.
Also the sound seems to definitely be coming from under the hood possibly from the back of the car but I think front may be more likely.
I read briefly on a few car/car repair forums that it could be anything from an AC compressor going out, a vacuum leak, fan belt, bad water pump, among others. I tried turning the AC on, which I have kept off for pretty much the entirety of the Summer and I heard the sound only once when I resumed driving. BUT, when I revved, the engine seemed noticeably louder; almost like it was laboring though the car drove just fine.
One other thing. Before it sounded as if the origin of the whistle was coming from the passenger side of the car. Just as of today it sounded as though it originated from the driver's side. So I'm really confused now. The car seems to drive just fine and the engine the day before sounded good if not great. I'm hoping it is nothing related to the engine.
*Few Notes:The oil was changed in June. The tires were replaced recently. Though the sound started before this. I was however driving on a really bad passenger side tire for a while. There is a short on the panel that contains the left turn signal. The bad bulb was changed and I plan to find a new panel as soon as Monday.
Ford - Explorer :: High Pitched Whistling Sound Coming From Under Hood
I have recently noticed that there is a loud, high-pitched whistling sound coming from under my hood that has progressively gotten worse over the weeks. At first, it would only occur when I had my AC or heat on and would stop immediately once i turned the AC/heat off, and will also happen from time to time when I accelerate. Now, this noise is happening right when I start my car and takes a few seconds to stop.
