Mini - Coopers :: 2005 - Higher Pitched Random Clattering Noise
I have a 2005 MINI Cooper S with manual transmission, bought new. Almost three years ago, it started making a strange noise that no one has been able to identify or repair. When turning full left at very low speed, like pulling into a parking spot or making a U-turn, the front end makes a strange noise that seems to be coming from the right front wheel. It's not a deep, rhythmic clunking noise, like a CV joint, but a higher-pitched, random clattering noise. More of a "cluh-click...click,click...clicketyclickclick...click...click" than a "clunk clunk clunk."
In September of 2010, I took it to the dealer. They assured me it was NOT a CV joint. They retorqued the axle nuts. The sound seemed to go away for a few days, but came back. I took it back, and they replaced one of the axle nuts. The noise went away but came back. This time the dealer replaced the other axle nut. The sound went away and came back. I took the car in a fourth time, and the dealer retightened everything on the front end - axle nuts (again), sway bars, shock mounts etc. Again, the noise went away and then came back.
I gave up on the dealer. Since then, I've taken the car to two independent BMW shops with similar results. Both of them made the sound go away temporarily, but then it came back.
A year ago, I replaced my second set of tires. To my surprise, the sound went away! I wondered if maybe the old, slightly-wider-than-recommended (215 vs 205) tires had been rubbing on something. But then, about a week later, the sound returned.
Passat (B6) :: Higher Pitch Of Faster Turning Engine / Car Idling At Higher RPM At Stop
Sometimes I will stop at a light and my idling rpm will go from 600 (usual rate she idles at) to about 950. While this may seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, it's noticeable enough that it seems like the car wants to go. It'll lead me to depress the brake more. You can also hear the higher pitch of the faster turning engine (it is a 50% increase in speed). This will happen at random times so I have not been able to pinpoint if it is caused by a particular driving style. ECM for this?

Installed 20x8.5 inch wheels/tires on 2011 Avalon Limited...tires are 245/35/20. I'm getting some rubbing when the car is loaded down and hitting bumps or too quick off the line. Car is white and I'm getting a little white paint on the outer wall of the back tires. Will rolling the quarter panels prevent rubbing or is this a too aggressive fitment?
View 9 RepliesPassat - Volkswagen :: 2008 - Fluttery Higher Pitched Noise Coming From Engine Area
2008 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T... I am trying to figure out whats going on with my car for a few weeks now. I have a few things going on and I am not if they are related.
First off I am hearing a odd noise now and then from my engine area. Its so hard to explain, but its kind of like when a plastic bag gets stuck to your car, a fluttery higher pitched noise (and it lasts only a few seconds). It happens now on heavy acceleration (almost always), normal acceleration and even sometimes at start up. Its mostly random and started awhile back but I use to only hear the sound every couple weeks. Now its daily.
Related or not I also have noticed this really bad lag with heavier acceleration, after lagging it then down shifts VERY hard before taking off.
Subaru - Forester :: 2001 - Making Whining Noise / Louder And Slightly Higher-pitched As Accelerate
My car is making a sort of whining noise; it sounds like some sort of tire noise, but I checked the tires and don't see anything that could be problematic. My husband checked to see if anything was rubbing, and doesn't find anything. The car is quiet when it is not moving, and the noise gets somewhat louder and slightly higher-pitched as I accelerate. It almost seems like the noise changed on a different road surface, but again, I don't see anything different with the tires. The car has about 140-150,000 on it. The noise has only been noticeable for a couple of weeks. No other problems, no change in steering or handling. No incident that I can think of that could have been a catalyst.

For the past few weeks on my '11 Ltd. when I turn the engine off & open the door the chime starts; doesn't do it all the time, just occasionally, & I can't figure out why. I've tried turning the ignition off with my foot off the brake, on the brake & neither way seems to make a difference. Sometime it chimes sometime it doesn't. I've checked to make sure the seat belt warning chime is off, even though that doesn't make any sense, the seat belt is not the door open warning. how to stop the chiming?

My 2002 Hyd Elnta GT began making a rubbing type noise it begins about 20 mph and is loudest @ 40 mph I noticed when I make a curve to the right at high speeds it stops but I can still hear like something is still rubbing buts it's a smooth type rubbing sound. When I'm going straight the rubbing is loud like a rib rubbing but when in a curve it's a soft rubbing noise like it's rubbing something smooth.
View 4 RepliesFord F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Consistent Ticking Noise / Gets Faster As RPMs Rise
I have that wonderful ticking noise... Here is some info on my truck: Its 133k, 5.3L 3V. I put new plugs in it and changed the oil (YES the right filter and oil).
Okay, so I'm trying to make sure my diagnosis is what I think it is before I start digging into the motor and get angry because I ordered the wrong parts.
Preface: I got the truck from a deal auction. I was told it ran great, well when I got it, it had this tick. It comes and goes as it pleases (not dependent on the weather or RPMS. The noise is consistent, it gets faster as RPMs rise, it doesn't go away after 1,200 rpms. This lead me to eliminate cam phasers as the issue.
Now here is something odd: After starting up the truck, initially it will be pretty quick and have great throttle response, but after that it will start act like someone put on the parking brake. It can barely accelerate and when you put it to the floor it gets worse. It seems to accelerate best at half throttle. The second part is the truck will shift, dropping the rpms incredibly low and the tick gets louder and more spaced out (leading me to think it's rpm dependent).
All of the noise seems to be localized around the passenger size head area. If I unplug the VCT solenoid the ticking doesn't seem to be as loud if I drive it the next day, and it doesn't do the shift into lower rpms and accelerates wonderfully. Leading me to think it's either the timing is off and when the phasers kick on it goes way out of time and causes it to go into limp mode...or the VCT solenoid is bad?
The ticking never fully goes away, but it has it's quiet days and LOUD days...
Touareg :: High Pitched Rubbing Sound Intermittently - Driveshaft?

View 2 RepliesCamry :: 2003 - When Go Faster Than 40 Miles Per Hour Bad Vibration Starts?
I have a 4 cylinder 2003. When we drive on the street less than 40 miles per hour all is fine. But when we go faster than 40 a bad vibration starts and gets worse the faster we go, but only when you step on the gas pedal. For example, if your doing 50 and step on the gas there is a bad vibration from the front but if you release the gas pedal there is no vibration.
View 5 RepliesCamry :: 2005 LE - Rubbing Noise After Driver Door And Fender Repaired
Last year an 8pt buck ran in to my driver door and bounced off the fender of my '05 Camry LE. I was able to get it into the shop Jan. 17th and got the car back Jan. 29th (driver door shell was replaced and fender repaired).
Since then my car has been making inconsistent "errr . . . errr" sounds on the highway going 65-70mph from the area where the driver door and fender meet near the base. Best described as metal rubbing metal. From what I can tell:
1) the sound produces the most on long highway curves to the right going 65-70mph
2) the sound produces the most on warmer days (40 degrees was the warmest we've had here in MN) and on days like today where the weather is 8 degrees I can hear it once in a while but very inconsistently.
3)The exterior looks fine from what I can tell.
4) suspensions and engine are all fine
I have taken it back to the shop and they seem very doubtful the noise is due to their repairs but I am positive that this noise did not exist until after it left their shop. One of the reps even sat in the car and heard the noise while we drove on the highway. They initially blamed the car noise on lug nuts that were placed on backwards which I knew was an excuse to get me out of their shop. Sure enough as soon as I took it out on the highway the noise was still there.
Jetta - Volkswagen :: 2005 - Making Rubbing / Grinding Noise Intermittently?
My 05 Jetta TDI is intermittently making a rubbing/grinding noise. Not in stop and go traffic but when I come to a stop at a stop sign, but only just before I come to a complete stop, not as soon as I hit the brakes. The shop that put the brakes on (about 18000 miles ago) looked at pads, rotors and pedal but said it's all fine. Could it be the booster, abs, or something else completely?

I've got this loud higher pitched scraping/rattling/clanking noise while moving. Neutral or drive makes no difference. I have a problem with my coast clutch not working and will be having the tranny shop (warranty) take a look at what's going on. Could this sound be from that? I hope it's noticeable on the video. I need to do my swaybar link bushings, but it's not a suspension clunk it's definitely a rotating noise.
View 9 RepliesAvalon 2005-12 :: Clicking Noise From Navigation DVD?
I've had a 2012 Limited for a few months now and love it, especially the quiet nature of the interior cabin. Ironically it was because of that I started to hear a noise that has become quite irritating. It was clearly coming from the CD / Navigation system and began (or at least that's when I first noticed it) after I installed a music CD for the first time. The noise sounded like the CD player was constantly searching for a CD so I filled all 4 CD slots, but the noise continued. I called my dealer and of course they have never heard of this issue before (do they take classes and rehearse that line, they deliver it so convincingly no matter how ridiculous it makes them look!) I have now removed the Navi DVD and that is clearly the source as the noise has stopped. My question, is this normal or do I have a service issue here?

My car has been doing that on and off for a while. Sometimes it can go without that annoying squeak for a month or so, then come back and disappear again. There is nothing like it would only do that on high/low rpms or when the AC is turned on for example. The noise just comes whenever it wants to. Today I had a chance to capture it.
Here is a short video ; [URL] ....
I was trying to listen to the bearings with mechanic's stethoscope and it seems that the tensioner is the loudest one. But if that bearing was bad it would make the noise all the time..
Avalon 2005-12 :: 2007 Limited - Tire Noise When Hit 74 Or 75 MPH
Ok...I've been reading about Michelin tires on the forum and unfortunately, I just bought my 07' Limited with a brand new set of Kelly "Charger" Tires. So, I took a trip last week and noticed at 55-73 mph, the car rides nice, smooth, and quiet. However, when I hit 74 or 75 mph, I began hearing a road noise that sounds as if the tires have hit a certain oscillatory air resonance at this speed.
I'm wondering if it's due to the tire tread pattern or something else. Strangest damn thing. When I accelerate faster, the noise seems to diminish a little but still isn't smooth and quiet. Maybe I'm just drowning it out some while it accelerates. When I bring it back down below 74 mph, it goes nice and quiet again.
I have the tire pressures set at 40 psi (trying to get a little extra fuel mileage). However, I'm wondering if this might cause the problem...I believe the pressure should be between 35-38 psi. My TPMS light hasn't lit up, so I guess it doesn't see fault with an extra 2 psi. Anyway, the tires appear to be a quality tire. I looked they show the following ratings.
Avalon 2005-12 :: Slight Noise From The Drive Train
Kind of stuck on a slight noise from the drive train on our 2007 Avy. It is not engine noise at a certain RPM it is from rolling at speed. I first rotated the tires and there was no difference at all. I thought it sounded like a CV going out so I replaced the left shaft. No luck. I could still hear it as it increases from nothing being stopped to being able to be felt slightly in the steering wheel either traveling straight or turning the worst between 60 and 65 MPH.
I replaced the right CV shaft and noticed slight wear in the support bearing and the support bearing bracket pinch bolt's rubber pad was worn in half. Ok, new CV shaft, new pinch bolt, tightened to specs, no luck. Ok, onto wheel bearings. I could still feel it in the steering wheel and it "sounded" like it was coming from the left side. I even rode as a passenger and moved about trying to get a better idea where it was coming from. I was convinced it was on the left so I pressed out the old bearing and installed new. No luck, same sound at the same speeds.
I replace the right wheel bearing (replacing a front wheel bearing on this car is not a fun job). Slightly better but still there. It's a subtle noise now but at the same speeds. I guess it could be a rear wheel bearing assembly but maybe I am missing something obvious.
